Definitely! I love the U-Mass solo... It also reminds me of one of the solos in Radiohead's Just. I don't know if there's a term for this type of playing but there's something about these "bursts of energy" solos...

I’m gonna be a jerk. Pixies records are great. They have some of the best rock songs, and best sounding guitars ever, in any genre, but Santiago Never, ever sounds good live. He’s a product of the studio. He’s not like Bob Quine, Marc Ribot, or Thurston Moore who could carry over the intensity of their studio performances onto live performances. If anyone has any clips of of Santiago actually sounding good live, I will retract my statement.

Dinosaur Jr's "The Lung" -- basically a vehicle for Mascis to demonstrate his chops, but it still raises my spirits every time I hear it. Also the solo in "Carry the Zero" by Built to Spill. The latter is a wonderfully intricate song but the solo is simple, with lots of luxurious bends that contrast nicely with the rhythm parts.

The Andy Partridge solo on XTC's 'Complicated Game'. He stated in an interview some years ago that when he went for a take the backing track was too loud in relation to his guitar so he just started to play as randomly as possible to attract the attention of the producer/engineer in the control room, but none of them looked up, and when he finished they all said: "Great solo, Andy!" so they kept it. It also happens to fit the song perfectly and leads (pardon?) nicely into the increasingly frantic, breathless vocal that follows. And, as I'm here, the solo on 'Miles From Nowhere by' The Only Ones. Did you say three suggestion? Can't remember, but something by Hugh Cornwell such as 'Hanging Around', 'Sometimes' or 'Something Better Change'. I've always found his solos to be melodic and lyrical and wonder why he doesn't get name checked more often. Unless it's only me that likes his solos in which case it all makes sense.

Love this list. I may have picked a few different choices, but really, it's hard to argue with the amazing folks you selected. I was listening and almost every time you went to the next selection, I almost literally burst out with "holy shit, yes!" And ending with that lovely rant about Neil Young has earned you and your channel a dedicated fan. Ok, truth is that already happened when I stumbled on your video of The Damned's Fan Club. Thank you for this channel. I love a lot of the other guitar and music channels out there, but far too often their actual music selections leave me cold.

I'm so grateful for your videos, Adrian. I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old, only just discovering the world of guitar music and lured in by the big, 'cool' rock solos of Guns 'n Roses, Van Halen, etc. As a girl I felt pressure to express my love for this type of music to seem cool to the guys and (male) guitar teachers, and it really got in the way of what I wanted to get out of playing guitar for myself. I never really felt compelled to pick up the guitar a lot in those years, and practicing left me frustrated. Many, many years later I discovered that playing guitar can be really fun and rewarding, when you don't have to prove to anyone that you can play Hotel California or whatever, and you can play guitar for yourself, to just have fun without the pressure of showing off. I wish I had had a guitar teacher like you that would have taught me guitar solos that wouldn't have impressed my parents at all at the recitals (because the solos aren't hard, or because my parents just wouldn't be able to 'get' them, lol) but would have made me an all the more fulfilled guitarist.

I had the same experience as a young girl playing bass (now FINALLY getting stuck into guitar). I hate how traditional 'rock' music lessons and grades are very white and male focused. Made me think the only women in rock were Heart until I discovered stuff like PJ Harvey and Sleater Kinney years later lol. Representation is important.

Great video. I was born late 60's. Grew up with two older brothers that were into the Beatles and The Who especially. Late 70's I got into (The) Sweet on my own. The 80's came along and I was on board with metal. While my brother turned me on to Adam Ant, Oingo, ect. With all that said, I truly enjoyed this video. This is the reason I have subscribed to you. You bring such a fresh breath of air into my musical lungs man. Thanks for all you do. Keep being you man. I appreciate your musical taste and knowledge. P.S. I have been debating getting a Wah-Wah. Robert Smith’s solo on the Cure’s Love song has always been one of my favourites. It’s a very memorable and almost vocal-like melody that perfectly sums up the emotion of the song rather than distracting from it as so many guitar solos tend to do.

Some more suggestions: Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights Weezer - Tired Of Sex Smashing Pumpkins - Quiet Blur - You're So Great (probably my favourite solo ever) Also, pretty much anything by The Strokes. Your top 10 is pretty similar to what my favorites would look like in the genre as well. Thanks for sharing these! And showcasing these very expressive and artistic ideas. I gotta say somethin about the maggot brain from funkadelic. So my father passed when I was pretty young, before I got to know him really. One of his old school and early career friends reached out to me and was telling me stories and was talking guitar, and one of the stories is that my father and him had wives pregnant at the same time and they were to name us Willie and Waylon. And he held up his bargain and there is a Waylon that I have never met who is named because I’m Willie. And that my dad would put in the 8track of maggot brain every night on the way to work and that’s all they would listen to for weeks haha. Great stuff to me.

A top 10 list that doesn't suck!? Brilliant! My love of the majority of songs here goes some way to explain why I never fitted in with rock bands :) Quine, Shelley, Young, Fripp etc all made more sense than the stuff my contemporaries listened to in the 80s when I started. Its probably why I don't have many friends ;) I'd love to see a Dave Gregory XTC solo Pink Thing, Super Supergirl or Real By Reel perhaps? However I happily subscribe to your Patreon pages mainly because you’ve introduced me to many guitarists and bands I probably wouldn’t have chosen to listen to. Way too many to list but including Wire, Siouxsie and the Banshees etc. This time it’s Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain now added to my library. Well done on reproducing that Coxon solo. Always look forward to your posts Adrian. I love the unpredictability element. Never quite know what you’ll tackle next. Keep up the good work.

Pixies, Where is my mind. Pale Blue Eyes Velvet Underground. Shadowplay, Joy Division, Plan 9 Channel 7 the Damned. Even Teenasge Kicks has a very simple but effective solo. Glad to see you have Neil Young up there.

So many songs to pick from, but the solo from Television's "Guiding Light" always hits me

Great video.. a few suggestions: Andy Summers has some interesting solos in Police: Bring on the night (another one note solo), Miss Gradenko (alternative jazz), Driven to tears (short, angular, perfect tone). then there's Richard Llyods solo in Television Foxhole. Big Black's Steve Albini, Kerosene chordal solo is mind blowing (his overall sound choice is always interesting)...

Brilliant, loved this video. I think one that would fit in with this list is the solo from the Scorpions "In-Trance"

When i heard the solo from The Great Curve by The Talking Heads performed by Belew, i was blown away, is just incredible and for some reason is not that well known or talked about... it has everything to be a legendary solo.

My favorite solo of all time is Gary Richraths guitar solo on Take it on the Run. I'm not an REO Speedwagon fan even, but it just elevates that song so much while being exactly what the song needs.

This is so cool. Love your channel. I opened for Richard Thompson a number of years back when he played in my hometown. My dressing room was next to his and I could hear him warming up. He made some mistakes and I laughed because I figured I’m probably one of the few people that’s heard him not playing brilliant flawless guitar. He was incredible during the actual show. Definitely one of the best solo artists around.

for quite some time, I've thought the guitar parts on the old Tom Waits stuff really interesting and Clap Hands is really a great choice, I'm gonna rewind and take a closer look. Thanks Adrian. Love the other choices as well. Such a pleasure.

Klasse, liebe Grüße aus Berlin ;-) Love it I was 14 or 15 years old, when I was flashed by the Buzzcocks and this "Anti-Solo" (now I´m 56; FCK) You understand the spirit of this instrument much more than most shredders Hier bin ich richtig - I´m in the right place here

I found "your ramblings" pretty interesting. While none of your choices would be on my list, I found your reasoning to be quite thoughtful and it displayed a real appreciation for the fullness of the term "alternative." Your videos tend to be interesting and useful, this one was also thought provoking. Nice work, even by your excellent standards.

Quality list there Adrian, interestingly, well to me anyway, Neil Young, Richard Thompson, Robert Quine, Marc Ribot, all big influences on Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo, who incidentally, was a big influence on Graeme Coxson, especially the solo on 'coffee and cigarettes'..

Adrian, awesome list! Surprised and pleased to see Waves of Fear on there! - as you said, it's the perfect solo for that song! And Quine's work all over the Blue Mask album is what makes it so great. As for other solo ideas: My Iron Lung by Radiohead, Santeria by Sublime and as others have suggested something by the Velvet Underground!
