The fretboard and my ear really opened up when I placed greater emphasis on triads. If you listen to really melodic players, they use chord tones to launch into melodic themes. Gilmour, Knopfler, and even most experienced jazz improvisers rely heavily on chord tones to create melody.

This is really cool and helpful, thanks! I tend to fall back on the pentatonic or modes on root. This seems like a great and simple idea to get out of that rut. I’m going to give it a try. Cheers!
