This was such a wonderful production on Broadway it's a real treat to know audiences are getting to enjoy it in the West End as well and with Sutton Foster. I'm also glad to hear they changed the ending. I'm surprised no one thought to change it in 2011.

It is such a treat for West End audiences! I agree, I'm surprised the ending is only now being changed, it just goes to show how far society has grown in the last ten years, which is fantastic!

I still haven't registered that I have tickets for this show. I went through an 'Anything Goes' phase at the start of the year, listening to all the cast recordings, and I couldn't believe it when this production was announced. You can imagine my disbelief when Sutton was then brought in! I can't wait, to the point of not even being able to think about it. I feel that in some ways this is just the show we need to lift people's moods, as you can't get more glamorous than a show set in the thirties (the costumes!!!) with Cole Porter tunes in it. And it's so upbeat. I'm pleased to hear about what they've done with the ending; to be honest, I've always thought it was weak anyway, and so certainly not worth the price of retaining. Not to mention that Georgie Ashford, another member of the theatre youtube community, is in the ensemble! Thanks for the review and for getting me as hyped as I should be!

I relate so much to how you're feeling about it, that huge anticipation was very real for me too! You're going to lose your mind at how great this production is, I can't wait for you to get to see it! It was great seeing Georgie living her best life in the ensemble too!

LOVE that you love Sutton. I was honestly just a little nervous as to how she would be received in England. I saw her in 2011 and have been obsessed with this particular production ever since and THANK you for letting us know that they changed the inappropriate end. I was in a regional production of the show in 2013 and it was SO uncomfortable. And I, too, love Kathleen Marshall if for no other reason (and there are many) because she knows how to choreograph men. I've seen too many productions of this show in which the sailors are a bit ... un-sailor-ly(?). I once embarrassed myself when I was sitting in an audience watching Ann Margaret in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and when the football players started clogging they looked like ballerinas ... and I was the ONLY one who suddenly busted out laughing ... loudly. It was very short but just about everyone noticed. Thank you for reviewing this. I normally don't like watching reviews such as this because the hosts are more about themselves than the production they are reviewing but I really enjoyed yours, Mickey. Thank you. I so wish I could come over and see it again.

I saw this on Broadway and the entrance applause was also insane then. I have a stage door photo with Colin Donnell! He was absolutely dreamy and kind. It was a two show day so Sutton very understandably didn’t come out.

I do enjoy when entrance applause happens and wish it was more common in the UK! Colin Donnell is fantastic, glad to hear he was nice in person, there's no stage dooring allowed over here at the moment as we're still navigating the pandemic but hopefully before the end of the show's run here that might be possible!

I went yesterday (Sunday) to see Anything Goes and I was amazed with the atmosphere within the theatre, people were clapping from the moment the orchestra started and a standing ovation when the curtain went up and twice more during the show and at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was an excellent cast and ensemble. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves and this came across during the show. It was strange but good to see so many people at a theatre again and nearly all wore their masks during the show. I definitely will be going to see it again before the show ends.

I was there that night too, and must have been sitting just behind you. I also was SO surprised at the applause for Sutton! I went in thinking everyone would be slightly stuffy British, or wouldn’t know who she was. But oh my gosh, it made me SO happy to see the reaction to her. One of the slickest, most well-cast shows I’ve seen in ages, and the cast were TOTALLY on it with timing their lines for the best laughs! Like you, I could (and have!) gushed about everyone and everything to do with it. You express it all so eloquently. Bravo 👏🏻

I saw it on the Saturday night preview, having booked the second I saw the Sutton announcement! Couldn't quite believe it was real until the overture started (loved the hat!). Think that's coz I'd tried not to get too hyped up about it, with shows temporarily closing due to positive covid tests, etc. Don't live in London, so might not have been able to reschedule. When the boat set was revealed for the first time, I literally did a sharp intake of breath, it was such high quality! Magical singing, dancing and live band :) We're so lucky to have seen it!!!!!

Wonderful to see this preview/ review. Sutton Foster was a goddess in this on Broadway (I’m sure you know the rehearsal video of the title song on KZfaq-the whole number, twice as long as the version on the Tonys. I loved your comments and enthusiasm. And as a frequent, longtime London visitor/theatre goer, I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been lost trying to find the Barbican!

Saw it on Saturday and .... WOW completely agree it was outstanding, they really need to release the music as a studio album it was that good. Also Sutton got like a 5 min standing ovation at the end of that act 2 number. I went to see it as there wasn't originally a lot of confirmed shows for that weekend when I was booking my holiday to London for a long weekend and am a fan of Robert Lindsey so booked it as a lets see what happens .... may have to try and get to london to see it again it was that good

We were at the second night! What an amazing evening- and I think very cathartic for everyone to finally have a "big" evening out. Both me and the friend I was with also saw the 2003 London production which was just as phenomenal if not moreso (the overture and two big numbers were clearly re-written for the 2011 but as far as I could tell the rest of the score was unchanged). It's an old show, but good tunes never age.

Love that you love the Theatre so much and will be your avid viewer from now on. BTW...IF you want to see 'Anything Goes' a few more times, go now. It is a limited run, (for now) only until October 17, 2021. Even if they extend, Sutton will have to leave then, because she starts rehearsals for 'The Music Man' on/around November 1, 2021, for an opening night of February 10, 2022 @ The Winter Garden in NYC. (First preview scheduled for December 20, 2021.) Keep keeping on and again, must tell you how much I'm enjoying your channel.

ahhhhh i had the amazing pleasure of being table to see the show not once, but *twice*, and it was so 👏 cool!!!! 👏 the first time we saw the show, i cried when sutton foster came out on stage at the beginning (the audience was also cheering and clapping for her), i cried when she started singing anything goes (standing ovation here), there was a standing ovation during gabriel, and a standing ovation at the finale. the second time was a little more dead audience-wise, but it was also so amazing to see the cast again. our ovation for gabriel was like two minutes long though. it was so fricking amazing, i can’t even describe it in words. all of the characters were just fantastic, and the audience loved them all.

What a wonderful video! Excellent reporting! I first saw Sutton in person on Broadway when she was in Thoroughly Modern Millie and then saw her again in The Drowsy Chaperone! PLUS I live in Oregon so I drove to Seattle, Washington to see Shrek when it was in pre Broadway tryouts at the 5th Avenue Theater! She is divine and I KNEW Broadway musical fans in the UK would lose their minds when word got out that she was replacing Megan Mullally! Thanks for treating her so well!

The addition to the cast of Sutton Foster was the reason I went from "I'd really like to see this" to "I have to see this" and she was everything and more that I'd hoped. But I also really want to throw some more love at Carly Mercedes Dyer as she was FABULOUS in every respect. So funny, so perfect. As I didn't know much about the numbers in this musical apart from the most known songs I had a moment in Act I where she threw off this random little bit of joke-y singing that was SO GOOD that made me wish dearly for a number where she featured more prominently and when that happened it was pure heaven. The whole thing was spectacular and I agree with every word you've said!

I’ve just recently found your channel, love your content! I did a community theatre production of Anything Goes in 2019/2020 (our opening night was New Year’s Eve) and we changed Luke and John to be Canadian (I’m from BC, Canada) and Reno came out at the end in a little gingham dress and wig/cowboy hat 🤣 our way of keeping true to the script but also not being offensive and it made zero difference to the plot. And made for a lot of laughs when the two men would run offstage yelling “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!”

It's highly unlikely I'll see this production, as I'm on the west coast of the U.S. with no plans for international travel anytime soon. But I've been watching the rehearsal videos they've been releasing and Anything Goes is a favorite of mine (my whole family is in the theater and I have stage managed this show twice). This is your first video I've seen and I loved your descriptions... so vivid and I could visualize all of it as you described it. I didn't know Felicity Kendall was in this (I'm old and grew up watching her in the late 70s/early 80s on The Good Life I think it was... it was "Good Neighbors" in the US) and I screamed "Felicity Kendall!!!" way too loud in my apartment just now. Thanks and apologies for all of my American spelling!! Haha!

Loved your enthusiastic, detailed and articulate review. I saw Sutton in the original production revival in New York (heck I even saw Patti Lupone play Reno many years earlier who also brought the house down with her leather lungs) and agree that she was phenomenal. The US and Canada national tour was headed by Rachel York who believe it or not was equally as good.

the whole "and I am telling you" incident, I don't think she did it with racist intent. you said it was pulled out of a hat, I saw that the audience was giving her suggestions to do that night, whether it was with a hat or not I don't know. she also did idina menzel and other things too. I understand that people could see it as "vocal black facing" because she was trying to sound like Jennifer Holliday but she was doing other people and other songs and because those other people were white there was no issue.I get people have done vocal black facing before but I don't think hers was malicious I think it was just joking around being goofy. it was 10+years ago and as you said we have progressed since then. it was a cringy video to watch. but I personally don't think it was done with racist content but I also understand why some people think it was. it annoys me because people jump on the band wagon straight away and call her racist without looking into the situation and what really went on. this is no hate to you. just my opinion... hope you enjoyed the show
@MickeyJoTheatre
@MickeyJoTheatre 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with this, I don't think it was ever malicious, just perhaps done out of an ignorance that many of us had until recently. It's unfortunate a public apology didn't come sooner but I do think the extent to which many white fans have branded her 'a racist' has been performative and unhelpful to having a conversation about it.

Getting quite emotional listening to this review, almost 6 months after I saw the same production. It was by far the most outstanding thing I've seen in a long time, maybe ever ( and I've been blessed with some good theatre this past 12 months). I also sat just before the opening, holding my breath in case Sutton Foster didn't come on stage and then couldn't believe she was actually standing a few feet away from me. Also totally agree about Carly Mercedes Dyer - she was PHENOMENAL! In a show full of spectacular performances, she nearly stole the show.

Saw Anything Goes last week just because I love most musicals and wanted to experience the Barbican for the first time (also adore tap and will forever regret my mum sending me to ballet as a little girl in the 1950's where I proved I have flat feet and can do a wonderful baby elephant impersonation whereas I'm sure I would have excelled at tap (wishful thinking!!!!) Your review is fab and I'm looking forward to reading some more. Just a small question - you don't especially mention Robert Lindsay who I thought was excellent and such a master at making obviously scripted comments sound like ad libs just for us at that performance. Did you enjoy his performance or is it just that I had a big crush on him way back in the 1970's when he was Citizen Smith on TV (Freedom for Tooting!!!) Thank you for this review and next time I'll race you to seat BB1!! PS I didn't know Sutton Foster at all but thought she was perfect in the role and so warm and engaging.

So far as I know, all current productions of Anything Goes use the new book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman (and the new orchestrations by Michael Gibson) created for the landmark Lincoln Center revival in 1987, starring Patti LuPone. How much of the original plot and dialogue they incorporated I don't know. Certainly earlier revivals had begun the practice of interpolating numbers from other Cole Porter shows; perhaps the re-aasignment of "Buddy, Beware" and "The Gypsy in Me" to other characters also dates from 1987. It's instructive to listen to John McGlinn's meticulous reconstruction of the original score on his recording.

I only actually saw this on tv at christmas but I loved Sutton Foster, loved that the tap was done in proper elegant shoes, Robert Lindsay BRILLIANT - I thought their "Friendship" number wa a great little cameo but I wasn't so crazy about the incidental casting. Felicity Kendal seems to have one emotion - hysterical. I didn't like it in the Good Life and I don't like it now. Then the mess with her "daughter" and her new beau (Gary Wilmot). Was the daughter the beaus illegitimate child becuase I am afraid the colour mix up was distracting. Why would a white woman have a coloured debutante child? OK so they changed the ending in an updating way but I think that was a change that just jarred every time they ere on stage together. Many years ago as a young drama student I saw Robert Lindsay open Me & my Girl. I was impressedw ih him then and I am still impressed with him now. The actor playing Billy was also great bt that muddle with eli, the deb and the mother spoiled it for me

I thought the controversy was about the producer for musicman and how she didn't really do much abt that whole episode. The Holliday thing is a symptom of today's society considering things that aren't racist racist. I imitate Menzel and Midler all the time...I'm not making fun of Jews. A lot of artists have distinctive styles and nuances that may be a product of their culture. Imitating them, whether as a tribute or as a parody, isn't equal to offending the culture. And it's from 10 years ago. People act like we don't have enough problems today to go digging up crap from a decade ago.

I get what you mean (I have strong feelings about her having lighter eyebrows than she did in 2011) but I think the glamour of the wig can only go so far when she has to dance and tap in it.

Perhaps you’re too young to remember the National Theatre production from over 20 years ago directed by Trevor Nunn. I don’t mind the changes in the current production but the National’s was hardly ‘racist’ . The two Chinese gamblers - played by British Asian actors. - deliberately disguised themselves as Chinese labourers to get on board the ship with Snake Eyes. They played along with the archetypal clothing for such labourers in the 1930s to remain ‘invisible’ and stuck on a straw hat to ‘hide in plain sight’. They delivered a very knowing performance.

Yes I wasn't watching a lot of Theatre 20 years ago 😅 That sounds like it was a good way of navigating the plot, the questionable part I was referring to is the show’s ending in which Moonface, Billy and Reno previously impersonated Asian characters with stereotypical accents and Costuming. The licensed amateur version also still contains a lot of questionable content.

Just saw the recorded version of this show. I must say, I was so distracted by how cheap Sutton’ s costumes looked, specially compared to her costumes on Broadway via KZfaq. Not to mention her wig net not being plastered properly. Distracting and disappointing unfortunately.
