There is a method to the madness that is Objects, Relations, Sets, and Collections. While not the most elegant, it can be quite powerful.

I appreciate all these Anytype videos, they are really helpful. When it comes to Collections, I find them really useful. This is how I use them: I created a page for everything work related and within that page I created collections for different types: meeting, task, project, etc. To all my types I use tags to separate them into work or personal. Within the collections I mentioned, I filter the objects so that only the ones relevant to that collection show up. It does mean that whenever you add a new object you have to first select the type relevant for the collection you're in, but I find it useful this way. It also looks great in the graph. It just depends on how you decide to use the tool. I'm also using Logseq for its ability to easily connect everything together, but I'm trying to slowly switch to Anytype only.

Oh, that's interesting... I hadn't thought about their use with the graph. I might've been a little quick to judge them... I'll give it another shot I suppose.

I'm also using Anytype together with logseq! What I find really useful is to use the "page link" with "copy page url" function in Logseq and then paste them in Anytype. This way you can connect with a deep-link to Logseq directly. But maybe you are doing it this way already... 👍
@pianomacpower

@@SimonLanz Oh interesting! I haven't actually been doing that, but that seems like a really robust system. If you're open to sharing more, how do you decide what goes in which software?
@SimonLanz
@SimonLanz Жыл бұрын
@@pianomacpower sure I can share a little bit: I really like the database style of Anytype (similar to Notion) and of course their open source and local first philosophy, which is why I switch now everything to Anytype. Also that we will soon be able to self-host it. But what I'm missing most in Anytype is a good PDF reader and annotation function, and the Whiteboard. So I'm doing research, brainstorming and concept-work in Logseq and then the organisation topics for projects / tasks, ressources etc. in Anytype. This works so far quite well for me. I'm now switching faster to Anytype than I originally wanted... but unfortunately I can't link Logseq to notion. Somehow Notion can't handle the deeplink format to other Apps. btw: thanks for your really nice videos! this will help a lot of new users of Anytype! 👍
@ionelvin

@@SimonLanz I actually haven't thought of that. Good tip. I really like Logseq for it's straight forward nature, but I wanted sync (used Syncthing but it's more of a workaround), a better Kanban and some other features that Anytype offers. The Graph is nice too on both tools.

Very good overall. But in some places the narration is too fast on an important point that more time should be spent on. An example is when the narrator is covering Sets and Object Types. That section of the video had to be replayed and replayed a number of times to catch all the details of what was being covered then.

Keep up the great videos! I think Anytype will be a gamechanger if they can evolve to functionality to keep it competitive. I have been "trying" to use Notion and Craft (and even ClickUp) to create a clean and organized Second Brain system, but there were too many complications for formatting and design with other apps. But Anytype is totally the right tool to beable to take Objects and place/organize them anyway you want! It just makes way more sense. Would love to see a video on how to set up a Second Brain in Anytype.

Will do! I've promised a lot of videos, and I can't keep track of all of them, but since this is the most recent, I'll go for this XD the Object organization is something I think is really unique, and might put an interesting spin on the second brain formula.

As far as I can tell, collections are sets that can have more than one object type, but the biggest difference seems to be that collections link notes in the graph where as objects in a set are still orphan. So I use collections more than sets now

I really want to like Anytype and use that instead of Notion. The offline capability is huge plus for me :) But I feel that Anytype is missing a few things like: - Subtasks, how to make them, and view them. I use a lot of subtasks for my projects. So one of the big issues for me. - Formulars, can't find this anywhere and I find the super helpful - Automations, so really looking forward to them releasing the API - and crossing my fingers its easy to use :)

Yeah, it's watered down on some of the more intense features, which is a downside for me too... these are pretty popular topics on the forums though, from what I can see (formulas for sure are big there), so there is hope!

My main gripe with this app is the overall feeling I get when using it. The homepage makes it sound like it's a free tool, but the first thing you see is a "Login or join" screen. The "Account settings" page shows "1GB of free backup space". This very much seems like a tool that is free in the beginning to fish users just to lock them in and change to a paid model. Of course this might be completely wrong, but it's how they present themselves. Also i don't see the obsidian comparison at all. Obsidian's main feature is completely missing: flat files. Anytype is a binary database format. Also while the app itself reacts relatively fast, the startup time is very slow. Obsidian starts instantly and there is no "login" process.
@pianomacpower
@pianomacpower 11 ай бұрын
This is true; I haven't come across speed issues with either, but I don't have expansive vaults in either, so that's not for me to say. In terms of storage, getting more is free for now, and don't let the 1GB scare you. Anything over goes to local storage (from what I understand).

Agreed, they sound like either they're fumbling or there's a turf war going on at the moment while Rome burns. For myself, these videos are the only ones that have made any sense, but I can't choose a product that turns into a commercial product - after I've spent the hundreds of hours to load 40 years of data. Have you looked into LogSeq as an alternative? Thanks to @PianoMacPower

so im trying to make an object, its a collection with a kanban view with certain tags etc... basically a boiler plate, which is use as a drag and drop for my TODO, WIP, DONE tasks, i have a personal page and a work page. I add an object of my collection but instead of copying a new instance of it, it is linking the boiler plate one, so any new tasks i add are also reflected in the boiler plate object, so if i ever add that boiler plate object to something else its no longer boiler plate, it is now filled with tasks i added from the my personal page... Am i making sense? So I want to create something and then reuse new instances of that object, just how we do in programming.

I'm not sure I'm understanding... that just seems like you'd want to use a template... you could put all of the default info in said template... Otherwise, I think you'd just want to make a copy, and then add on the additional info... I don't think there's any way to (using the programing example) do inheritance.

9:00 Anytype doesn’t allow you to drag existing objects into a collection. You have to keep making new objects within a collection. When I figured this out, it defeats the purpose using it as a Notion sub because I can’t create a database in a database. …still looking for an offline Notion equivalent.

Thank you for your clear explanations. I will take the opportunity to point some some doubts I have on the app. The Android app does not lead me, and I tried various ways, to Book type template with ready made relations, just as the desktop app does. Maybe it has not reached complete compatibility with its desktop counterpart, and therefore unusable?

I think so... the mobile versions are in a different state than the desktop releases. I would check with the Anytype Community's notes on the most recent Andriod versions... I'm an iPhone person myself, otherwise I'd give it a try...

Can I filter in a set for type "whatever" to see if is in a collection? I don't think you can currently, my thinking is that Collections (hyped to see collections 2.0) are set manually, therefor may be possible to have certain types that you always want to add to a certain collection (to stablish connection in the graph) but you may forgot some, so it would be helpful to know which of those objects are not in there.
@pianomacpower
@pianomacpower 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, as far as I can tell, collections are a purely manual setup - basically like folders. I'll admit, I haven't been playing with it too much, but I can't really find a way to auto-filter collections.

Thank you for the explanation. Coming, or got used to use Notion beforehand and *trying to switch to Anytype, I find it quite strange workflow wise. In Notion it is pretty much straightforward when creating or editing table/ database, you can just create any kind type, status, and so on without opening a new window. In Anytype, that kind of workflow is not that fun actually. I believe if Anytype could make that thing easier, that's a huge W.
@pianomacpower

Yeah... not yet, sadly... The best you can do is have 2 accounts, which is possible since (at least for alpha testers) the onboarding code can make 5 separate accounts. But it's not like Notion where your account can have multiple workspaces, or Obsidian with as many vaults as you could dream of... which is a serious downside in my opinion.

One template for a specific Object, or one Object type? You must have multiple Types, but you should be able to delete templates for Objects from the Object page... if it has a default view you don't like, there should be a drop-down with "Use view" or something similar that has Basic, Note, Profile, and another I can't remember... pick from that if you want every type to look the same 👍
