Aoe2 "Break the Meta" #7: Fearless Fast Castle Age with No Walls

In episode 7 of my "Break the Meta" series for Age of Empires 2 I analyzed a situation in which a Fast Castle Age with no walls was actually an effective strategy on the map Arabia. Due to the sparse forests and tall elevation in Arabia, going for a Fast Castle Age without any walls or initial aggression can be incredibly risky. However, DauT's open map generation and an unfavored civilization matchup forced him to think outside of the box. With no walls, no drush, and both stone mines forward, DauT hatched a plan to turn this game around.

Daut is, probably, the best AoE2 player of history. The Viper is on top today, but Daut really knows how to use all of strategies.

So now DauT is unquestionably my favorite pro player to watch. This video (and really this whole series) is exactly what I needed to watch to convince me that Fast Castling on open maps isn't a completely suicidal strategy. I'm a noob, and I watched this video last night and decided to try it today. I wasn't as bold since it was on crater lake but I decided not to wall or anything, 2v2 btw. My opponents decided to wall like crazy (double palisade and then stone, the other guy did something similar to my teammate). I was going for a knight rush and decided to make 15 or 20 knights and just throw away 3 transports and 2 galleys and drop them behind the wall. No military at all from either opponent and they resigned. They probably would have won since they took the sea and the middle lake w/ gold but they wasted so much of their resources on walls and sea units they had nothing left to fight. On another note, I used to play this game when it first released and it's great playing again. Though some of the online frustrations are some how still here. I played online with dial up internet (56k too slow). My roommate discovered your videos and we both really enjoy your casts. Thanks for your hard work and God bless!

Amazing game. I really enjoyed it. Interesting strategy and brilliant tactics. I've been playing this game for 15 years of playing, I thought that nothing can surprise me anymore, but this was a really nice surprise.

Amazing. DauT is exactly the kind of player who would analyse this map and think: those two stones are out of the question, but if I place my second and third tc *there* and *there*, then I can put a castle in between and keep everything safe I think I should try and learn boar stealing some day if you see what I mean :)

cyclops only did 2 upgrades on his monks to counter the mangonells. (the one for 15 extra hp and the one for converting builings and siege.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but any reason why Cyclops did not use the converted mangonel to hit the villagers instead of the town centre?

+Kuang Eu Tay A mangonel has only one more range than a TC, so it can hit it without being hit. To attack the villagers, it would have to get closer, which would allow the TC to shoot back => RIP mangonel ;-)

Hey Res, would you maybe make a tutorial on raiding an economy efficiently? Like, you'd go over all things that factor into wrether it's worth sending units over and how that thought process goes in the middle of a match. At the very basics I figure it just comes down to how many resources they will miss out on when I force them to idle and how likelly it is to actually kill a villager or two (how much time you have) vs. the unit cost and risk of having less defensive units (your investment)

Daut knew he just had to delay his opponent until the Imperial Age, or at least punish his forward push, since Turks just own those eagle warriors with their gunpowder in the late game.

the main difference here is a lot better micro management and decision making from daut

The Aztèque played badly. He was putting pressure on daut and when he saw janissaires in his base he overreacted. Why did he make his crossbow men come back ? Instead he would have had keep pressure on the turc. With some skirmishers he would have destroyed the janissaries. And janissaires suck against knights.

No Janissaries do not suck against Knights. Janissaries deal 17 damage and always hit their opponents in close range, so they are good against melee units, even cavalry. Also, he couldn't apply more pressure with his Xbows because of the Turks' TCs and Castle.

Janissaries have no good answers in the Castle Age. They outrange mangonels and crossbows and skirms.

Monks were not cost effective against turks, because he didn't use knights.

This was a stupid game, DauT lost at least 3 Villagers to the drush at the start, he was basically not even paying attention, it's like he was just trolling this game. He probably just stole the boar since he found it early with his scout, then thought "let's fast castle now yolo" because he's a pro and his opponent wasn't as good as him

This was uploaded slightly later after the Pokemon alpha sapphire and this video already has more views and likes than his Pokemon alpha sapphires. People at least still watch his other video got those videos a chance.
