The shorter Japanese player; SO impressive at poaching! Her instinct is amazing. Congrats to the Japanese pair. Better luck next time to Coco & Jessica.

Unpopular opinion: I hate how pegula and coco plays doubles. They have no idea how to poach at the net (especially pegula) and solely rely on baseline groundstrokes. Pegula just keeps going cross-court too.

That's not an unpopular opinion, it's a fact! 🤷🏾‍♂️...They can win by overpowering most of today's doubles teams but when they face doubles specialists, they are going to lose more times than not because they don't consistently execute DOUBLES plays.

It’s true! They are very talented singles players that get along well, so that can produce a solid doubles team. and the doubles field is really lacking lately so it makes sense that they have been able to do well. I personally just miss Strycova/Hsieh!!!

This is the difference between singles players playing doubles versus doubles players. Not mean or unpopular, just a fundamental strategy difference. Not bad, just fact.

Against such aggressive poaching, you just have to take more risk with down the line shots especially moon shots. Pegula/Gauff were probably not used to such style and could not adjust in time.

Coco and Jessica deserved to lose this match. They were not playing to win, they were playing to stay in the match and that’s not how you win big titles in doubles. Aoyama and Shibahara were all over the net and the court because they were playing to win - not staying in the back of the court hitting cross court the entire match. Well done! 🙂

Even when Gauff and Pegula were leading 4 - 6 , and then 5 -6 on their own serve in the second set tiebreak you knew that they were going to lose...... and they did not surprise me. I have seen them lose the BIG POINTS before when playing doubles together.

Terrible vision by Coo/Pegula, as they were unable to overcome the aggressive poaching. Also, it was as if they couldn't hit flatter and lower from the baseline (with more angle) to mitigate the crazy poaching.

Cannot tell much beyond the highlights, but the American duo each appeared to play like counterparts in a singles match. Thanks to their superior physicality and baseline skills they are able to reach the top, but this probably wouldn't have happened a few years ago when Doubles were actually competed by veterans in long-standing partnerships
@HorribleGBlob
@HorribleGBlob Жыл бұрын
What? They’re a regular partnership, with three titles last year and appearances in Slam finals and the WTA finals. Gauff was (is?) ranked first in doubles overall.
@peterzhou9267
@peterzhou9267 Жыл бұрын
@@HorribleGBlob which did not mean much. The success, again is based on their respective singles prowess. Some of those pairs even won slams, but this wouldnt happen if you think about, say, 2019, where the top teams are both respectable singles players too but use instead court sense to generate success. E.g. Mladenovic/Babos, Hsieh/Strycova, Sabalenka/Mertens. Even Zvonareva/Siegemund is better at this sense.

Aoyama hugs the net. But she is short. Why no moon ball-lob game? Going mano a mano against a doubles net player is low percentage unless they're rec players. Regardless, the better DOUBLES team won.
