Guys don’t worry I think there will most likely be a TON of devices tomorrow so it’ll be easy to pick out a few that you recognize. I think they will probably put a bunch of different devices on there because that way it will be more representative of what we have learned throughout the year.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I MANAGED TO GET A 5! BY WATCHING THIS VIDEO AND THE LAST MINUTE STUDY SESSION, I LEARNED MORE STRATEGIES IN THOSE TWO VIDEOS THAN MY TEACHER DID. Your words were very comforting when I was taking that test and that gave me confidence to do the best that I could. I am more of a STEM kind of guy and not much of a humanities person. So, I am really happy that I aced the test that I thought I was going to fail in. Thanks again!

Also, wanted to ask if a conclusion was necessary, such as should I pick to finish a 3rd body paragraph or finish a conclusion.

I don’t think it’s necessary but it is better to do so. Your conclusion is what really ties of your essay or like it brings a ending. Don’t focus to much on it though , focus on your body paragraph and intro more .

There is no deduction for an incomplete essay, but the more you can develop your essay and complete it, the better. If you have a choice between a third body paragraph and a conclusion, it’s really up to you. Maybe try to write a body paragraph that contains a few closing thoughts in the final sentences.

The conclusion can help you achieve the sophistication point and also restate your thesis in case it wasnt worded well in the intro

Yes, two pieces of evidence could be enough, but more evidence and more commentary will help you earn as many points as possible.

I did three practice exams. My teacher gave me a 1-4-0 on the first one, but a 1-3-0 on the other two. The worst part is that I'm not sure if 49.5 minutes is enough for me to finish the essay. *Panic intensifies* And yes, 0.5 minutes is enough for me to submit my answers. I've done it three times already ;-;

Remember that AP English Language is the largest AP Exam of them all, so we expect more than 500,000 people will be uploading their essays at the exam same time tomorrow. Watch that clock carefully.

I have learned not to do this from my AP Biology exam. I submitted with 2 minutes on the clock for my APUSH exam and it submitted automatically but my AP Biology failed to submit and was slow on submitting it in the last 50 seconds. Never again.

Question : for the rhetorical analysis do we have to use EXACT vocabulary words in our class that we learned (e.g. Conduplicatio, Commoratio, Anaphora) or can we use things such as appeal to imagery, tone, etc?

You can use anything that counts as a rhetorical choice, including devices and appeals and any other choice that the writer has made.

In theory, you could print from your phone, but be careful about running into tech problems by relying on your printer. Have a good backup plan just in case!

Do we have to mention what the term for a specific device is? For example, can we say the author uses indirect references or would we specifically have to say the term “allusion”? Additionally, can anything be a rhetorical device as long as it enhances the author’s argument, even if it isn’t a device that is commonly discussed? For example, could “appeal to human rights” count as a rhetorical device?

I think as long as whoever is looking over yours can understand what you are trying to convey then it’s fine if you do not use the actual term. An appeal to human rights is definitely a rhetorical device i think, because the author could appeal to that to connect to the audience for their argument.

Yes, remember the word in the prompt is "rhetorical choice" not "rhetorical device," so you can use any choice the author made to achieve his or her goals.

So I think my intro was good and that I had really strong body paragraphs, like I’d get the thesis point and the 4 points for evidence, and I think the sophistication point would fit for my essay...but I didn’t put a conclusion. Would that penalize the grading of my essay?

You can still earn full points even without a conclusion, but it could have helped with the sophistication point. Congrats on finishing your exam!

do you think we would be able to copy parts of the prompt they give and paste them in our essay? Also, could we say "the author was able to appeal to the audience by sharing their own personal experiences" would that count ? At least this is something we learned during the school year unlike bio lmao

You cannot copy and paste from the prompt or passage. If you do quote, keep your quotes brief and be sure to analyze them. In the same you wrote, make sure you are explaining how or why the author’s sharing of her personal experiences helps her get her message across. I hope this helps! Good luck on your exam today!

Introduction: + thesis + maybe a little bit of context Body PGs: maybe 2 or 3 + evidence/quote with rhetorical strategy + explain quote/strategy + show how rhetoric relates to the argument/purpose/ or message + analyze writer and audience + describe why it is persuasive + relate to thesis End: conclusion by restating thesis

Marco Learning when looking at the rubric, the evidence and commentary section(for 3 points) states that their needs to be “some explanation of how the evidence supports the argument” and there needs to be “discussion of at least one rhetorical choice.” if I use a rhetorical choice for my evidence to support the argument, would that same rhetorical choice apply to the “discussion of at least one rhetorical choice that contributes to the writers argument”?

If your essay is a total of only two paragraphs, then it would not score highly on the evidence and commentary row. Try to write at least three paragraphs at a minimum.

There are rubrics for each question type of the AP English Language Exam. This year's shortened exam will only focus on Question 2: The Rhetorical Analysis Essay.

Yes, officially the test is not curved, but it is “adjusted” based on how students perform across different prompts.

Yes, the College Board has confirmed that there will be no line numbers on the 2020 exam because there so many different devices and formats for this year’s exams.

No, there is no required word count, but the more evidence and commentary you present, the greater the possibility of earning the full points of the rubric.
