I did. Was scared shitless but the alternative was a lot less attractive. Just had to put my faith in the training and experience of the fine sailors aboard the Gonzalez and concentrate on their directions, and try to ignore the movement of the deck. After our third landing, barely noticed and by the time we completed our qualification, it wasn’t THAT big of a deal anymore. What always was a big deal to was was flying over open seas.

What I believe he means is that in most other countries especially before ww2 and even to this day, the branches of military only work together in the broad sense of the term. Germany are the ones who pioneered and America perfected the art of having the military branches working in unison for a single objective, not multiple ones for their own branches.

Note:their rotors don’t fold back like USMC or USN chapters, and with the rotors extended the bird didn’t fit through the hanger doors, so had to be chained on the flight deck. These pilots are freaking awesome. Think about it. They are landing on a moving, pitching ship with a good headwind. USA RULES.

Wow! Great job! Different when you have to hit a moving target in the water but they pulled it off. The Navy has even taught AF pilots to land on carriers.

This is exactly the scenario that made me prefer the LCS-2s vs the LCS-1s. The Indys have a huge flight deck compared to the Freedoms'. House US Army personnel and equipment onboard and have an off shore refuel/rearm outpost out of range from most land based attacks.

I actually spent months aboard the USS Ponce in 2014 testing this concept. The idea was, "What happens when the Marines are stretched too thin?" Operation Spartan Shield. 4-227 ARB 1CD

This is cool - my father landed his USAF UH-1 aboard a USN carrier during Vietnam, I forget the exact circumstances but I believe it was due to injured aboard (he was medevac) - I don’t think they let him take off though. 😆 Rough seas, I think he said it was one of the most difficult things he’d done as a pilot.

It would have to have been part of the battle plan all along, to my knowledge the navy doesn’t fly anything that uses the same ammo type as the Apache’s cannon so they would probably not have had those shells onboard if it wasn’t
