Look-into/consider Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), EMDR therapy and Transcranial Megnetic Stimulation! I'm not a veteran myself, but come from a medical family, and have heard decent things regarding these specific treatments for vets w/ P.T.S.D.

Strong work, man! It's a very, very hard road. Fortunately, all you have to do is not quit and you'll be successful. To add to the "light at the end of the tunnel": In a few years, when you've gotten your shit wired tight, you're going to start noticing a bunch of other vets around you who need help. By doing this, you are scouting the path for them, and building credibility. You will soon have the opportunity to show them a path towards getting better. Keep that in mind if your path gets hard in the next few months/years. It's not just you - there are thousands of dudes like you and me out there. If some of us can get better, we can turn around and give a hand to guys who are worse off - like negotiating a wall on an O Course.

I'm here to stay connected to the veteran community. I served in the marine corps and deployed to Afghanistan. I didn't do much but I have my fair share of problems and I definitely feel like others have had it worse. And I work with a guy (same building different department) that was a 160th crew chief.

I was an Apache Crew Chief. On the subject of experiences and PTSD, it’s definitely relative. I definitely struggled a lot when I got home and I had to get myself help. My behavior was very much driven by extreme anxiety and depression. I talk with a lot of veterans from all walks of life and when you drop those titles and ego built from belonging to separate communities, you can really relate to any of them. Doesn’t matter what you were and what you did, we all deal with the same sort of conditions. I didnt really talk about certain things at first until a therapist told me I should-just to let it out and decompress. Now I’m a pretty open book but I try to just keep it antidotal and intend to not make myself seem as someone special. Just sharing stories and sentiments to help ease my mind. And it helps a lot to listen to other stories or interviews of other veterans.

I'm so glad I found this, because Ryan always so casually mentions "I was an attack helicopter pilot and CIA operative over a 15 year career" and just stops and moves on and I keep listening to his channel going HOW CAN YOU JUST BRUSH OVER THAT AND NOT SPILL 😂

PS My Pop Pop was in the 120th of the 30th infantry and fought threw Europe making staff Sargent and receiving a Silver Star with OLC Bronze Star and Purple Heart from Mortain France. I was lucky to here his stories and have them written down . But my cousins nephews and younger family never got to here them from him in his Baltimore drawl with a cigarette and Martini recount getting hit by tank shrapnel and being surrounded at Mortain.I wish he had had the chance to be interviewed by other veterans. He always said that most books were usually written by Generals and the only general he ever saw up front was killed during operation Cobra . Cheers guys and thanks again. 🥃🍻

On the visualization point, when I went through infantry OSUT in 2019, the Army hired sport psychologists to come in and talk to us about visualization and some other things. Unfortunately our drill sergeants called them retarded (to us, not to them) and told us not to listen to them but there's apparently an effort from the Army to teach visualization to basic Infantrymen now.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:02 🚁 *Ryan Fugit grew up overseas due to his father's State Department job, giving him a unique perspective on the world.* 05:56 🇺🇸 *Ryan transitioned from a childhood overseas to life in the US for high school, where he noticed the contrast between first and third-world problems.* 08:56 🌍 *Ryan's upbringing and admiration for his father's military service influenced his decision to join the Army.* 14:15 📺 *Ryan was in Washington, D.C., when the 9/11 attacks occurred, sparking his desire to contribute to the war effort.* 15:23 ✈️ *Ryan entered Army aviation through ROTC, attended flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and had the opportunity to select his preferred aircraft, ultimately choosing the Apache helicopter.* 34:10 🚁 *Apache helicopters were initially designed for Cold War-style operations, where they would hover above enemy positions and engage multiple targets simultaneously. However, this tactic proved ineffective in modern conflicts.* 36:15 😳 *Fixating on targets during gun runs can lead to catastrophic accidents, even for experienced pilots. Maintaining situational awareness is crucial during combat operations.* 37:41 🚁 *Apache helicopters typically dive toward their targets during gun runs to reduce rotor wash interference and align with the wind, allowing for more accurate shots.* 38:43 🌐 *Aviators at the agency often wear distinctive watches, making them easily recognizable in certain settings, such as casinos.* 41:26 🌍 *Ryan Fugit's first deployment was to Afghanistan in 2008, after being stationed in Germany. He had previously undergone infantry training to better understand ground operations and later served as an Apache pilot supporting infantry units.* 42:51 🚁 *Attending career courses outside of your branch can provide valuable cross-pollination and learning experiences for military personnel.* 43:58 💬 *Personal connections formed during cross-training can be crucial during combat operations.* 47:13 🌃 *Combat situations can be extremely chaotic and challenging to differentiate between friendly and hostile forces.* 54:12 🤯 *In the fog of war, split-second decisions and unexpected challenges can occur, even for experienced military personnel.* 57:53 🌄 *Operating in unfamiliar and hostile terrain can lead to intense combat situations, where visibility and decision-making become critical.* 01:03:11 🚁 *Ryan Fugit shares a harrowing experience of narrowly avoiding an enemy rocket attack while flying in an Apache helicopter.* 01:04:21 🪖 *During a challenging mission, the Apache helicopter had to make multiple trips to rescue soldiers, requiring general officer approval due to extended flight time.* 01:05:28 🛡️ *Ryan Fugit recounts the incredible story of an AK round hitting their fuel bladder in the Apache helicopter and the bladder's self-sealing mechanism preventing disaster.* 01:09:52 🚀 *Ryan Fugit discusses the strong desire he had to join the CIA even after military service, eventually pursuing a career in the agency.* 01:13:33 💼 *Ryan Fugit explains his role as a collection manager in the CIA, focusing on bridging communication gaps between different intelligence entities.* 01:43:42 🎙️ *Ryan Fugit struggled with the transition back to civilian life after his combat tour as a helicopter pilot, grappling with PTSD and family concerns.* 01:45:06 🤔 *Ryan dealt poorly with his post-military struggles until his wife insisted he seek help from a psychologist, highlighting the importance of seeking assistance for mental health.* 01:50:00 ✈️ *Ryan didn't miss flying but considered getting an instructor pilot certification to teach his son to fly.* 01:55:12 🧠 *Visualization techniques and a strong "no-quit" mentality were common themes among Tier 1 operators and other interviewees on Ryan's podcast, Combat Story.* 02:00:10 🪙 *Combat Story has provided a valuable outlet for veterans and has unexpectedly helped people going through tough times, fostering a sense of connection to the veteran community. Ryan plans to continue this work and eventually explore interviews with intelligence professionals.* Made with HARPA AI
