(16 Jun 1985) QUOTE REF ZIMBABWE: Dr Joshua Nkomo addressed more than 70,000 of his
SYND supporers in Bulawayo, southern Zimbabwe, about the need to
26.6.85 retain law and order and good government. He again denied
LN114944 any involvement with dissidents belonging to ZANU-PF and not
to ZAPU-PF, his party. Later in the day, Bishop Abel
Muzorewa, another leading contender in the election, held a
smaller rally saying they had all lived through five years of
political nightmare.

ZIMBABWE SHOWS: Nkomo rally and speech at White City Stadium;
Bulawayo Muzorewa rally and speech at Stanley Square in the suburbs.
Date Shot: 16 June 85

A great pity that PF-ZAPU and RF did not unite against ZANU-PF; the history of a post-Zimbabwe might have been so much brighter methinks. An aside if I may, and as a former Rhodesian army regular officer, I have nothing but the greatest respect for our former foe, ZPRA (aka ZIPRA). These were disciplined, well trained and aggressive men. A great travesty when one considers what might have been...

Agreed. Zim was sold out to the Chinese backed ZANU just because ZAPU had Soviet backing the British and American governments turned a blind eye to election rigging and intimidation and eventually ethnic cleansing. Another pawn on the cold war chess board.

As a white Policeman I had Mr Nkomos house in Pelindaba under my Security watch. We were always respectful towards each other and was in fact friends with some of his Family and top men. We witnessed the rage between Zanu and Zapu during the Entumbane time and realised then that had Zipra (Or ZAPU) and Smiths Government joined forces we would have had a different Zimbabwe today. A pity Mr Nkoma chose to support Mugabe as it was only a question if time before old tribal hatreds would emerge and the shona would use their power to take down the Ndebele and any opposition. Mugabes election was won only on a numbers game, thats all, 80% Shona and 20% Ndebele. Doesnt take a genius to have seen that from the begining. A united Government under Nkomo, Muzorewa and Smith would and could have build a Fantastic country for us all. RIP Mr Nkomo, just a pity you couldnt see the Trees for the forest at the time. Zanla forces were absolutly no match at all against the well trained and loyal Rhodesian army (80% Blacks) and the Zipra forces.

@@zimpiratecoms "grievances"... There we go, you said it yourself! Not enough positions were fairly granted amongst ministers of both ndebele and Shona!? Thus the matabele had a motive to rise up against zanu isn't it?.... Cmon buddy wake up! What would zanu and Shonas had done if they were caught between a rock and a hard place like that? Would they have just sat back in the name of nehanda and sekuru kaguvi and just swallow what zapu was oppressing them with? Cmon wake up my friend... The British after independence put mugabe up to it! They gave him a taste of power and said that's it... Zanu is now in control & the most powerful force in Zim and if u feel the ndebele are a threat you should wipe them out!
