This 1957 documentary explores South Africa's apartheid policy, focusing on issues such as race relations, political practices, and segregated dwellings. The film includes several interviews with black and Afrikaner political leaders.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Apartheid (from Afrikaans "the state of being apart") was a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation by the National Party governments, who were the ruling party from 1948 to 1994, of South Africa, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy and Afrikaner minority rule was maintained. Apartheid was developed after World War 2 by the Afrikaner-dominated National Party and Broederbond organizations and was practiced also in South West Africa, which was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate, until it gained independence as Namibia in 1990.
Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. However, apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into four racial groups ("native", "white", "colored", and "Asian"), and residential areas were segregated, sometimes by means of forced removals. Non-white political representation was completely abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called Bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of white people.
Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long arms and trade embargo against South Africa. Since the 1950s, a series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more effective and militarized, state organizations responded with repression and violence. This, along with the sanctions placed on South Africa by the West made it increasingly difficult for the government to maintain the regime.
Reforms to apartheid in the 1980s failed to quell the mounting opposition, and in 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, which were won by the African National Congress under Nelson Mandela. The vestiges of apartheid still shape South African politics and society. Although the official abolishment of Apartheid occurred in 1990 with repeal of the last of the remaining Apartheid laws, the end of Apartheid is widely regarded as arising from the 1994 democratic general elections.
The Apartheid Legislation:
The Apartheid Legislation in South Africa was a series of different laws and acts which were to help the apartheid-government to enforce the segregation of different races and cement the power and the dominance by the Whites, of substantially European descent, over the other race groups. Starting in 1948, the Nationalist Government in South Africa enacted laws to define and enforce segregation. With the enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, racial discrimination was institutionalized. The effect of the legislation was invariably favorable to the whites and detrimental to the non-white racial groups namely the Colored's, Indians and Blacks.
What makes South Africa's apartheid era different from segregation in other countries is the systematic way in which the National Party formalized the Apartheid rules through the law.
Mandela:
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997. Mandela served 27 years in prison.

Well they are very stupid because the people in the bible were not white, Jesus wouldn't have been white either so them being racist against people who aren't white is so stupid. As a Christian myself this makes me feel sick to watch because I read my bible and in Christianity you are taught, or I interpret it anyway to love one another and that everyone is equal (slavery was only in the bible because of the historical context, there were slaves in every ancient civilisation back then). It makes me so angry when I see racists call themselves Christians cause they wouldn't know the first thing about being one.

@first Dude when the slave holders of the south consulted their holy book on guidance on whether slavery was wrong , they were met with verses which permitted a slave owner to beat his slave as long as they didn't die the same day. If they died the next day or day after . No problem.... Also when they looked in the New testament they are met with God incarnate never denouncing slavery once in all his 33 years here on earth.... Amazing how it took non religious people to eventually say slavery is wrong and then to ban slavery

As if this bullsh*t propaganda hasn’t been shoved down everyone’s throats for 40 years… People believe this crap because they continue to hear it and aren’t curious enough to learn the truth. Apartheid was necessary, it worked, and it was the right of the founders and creators of South Africa. These people built the nation from scratch on uninhabited scrubland only to see millions of illegal migrants come pouring in from the north. With overwhelming numbers but more importantly with pressure from the entire virtue signaling world the Afrikaners were forced into handing their homeland over to the absolute thuggery of the ANC and the rest is history. Look what’s become of a once prosperous nation… Mandela was a terrorist and a low IQ thug who is painted as some noble revolutionary. I used to believe the propaganda. Then I looked into it and it’s all so disgusting.

Bilbo Weer And who though them that? Racism against blacks wasn’t a thing in South-Africa before the dutch made is very clear that black people and half breeds were a no no. Honestly South-Africa was fine before all kinds of people came in and told the peole whom already lived there for centuries where they could go and where not. It blowd my mind honestly. And I just know you’re gonna give me the whole “but they did that too, they conquered each others lands” yes but this wasn’t about conquering land, this was solely about exploiting racism because they still though that black people were less then them. Look no country is perfect, there is no such thing. I mean in America kids and grown ups are shooting each other, here in the Netherlands we are still discussing about if zwarte piet (Black pete) is racist or not. Does that mean that eather of these countries are shit holes? It becomes very easy to just judge a whole country on a couple thing you hear or read on the news. If I did that....America would be the biggest shit hole of them all.

I'm not an historian, but from what I've read/researched Afrikaners didn't create Apartheid; the English did that. They created laws to keep the races separate, but they didn't give the 'system' a name. The Afrikaners were the ones who dubbed it Apartheid. The reason I'm saying this is simple: *THOSE WHO ARE UNAWARE OF HISTORY ARE CONDEMNED TO REPEAT IT*. We need to understand ALL of the details and specifics, no matter how trivial they seem.

Reading through the comments section and seeing numerous "South Africa was better under Apartheid " comments from white people shows that they have never and will never show orhave empathy for what black South Africans endured under their rule. Better for who? For who? The humiliation our grandparents suffered, their fear of whites still very evident when they encounter white people TODAY, the psychological impacts of their brutality, some parents died not knowing where their children were buried, Apartheid graves are still being found 25years after democracy. Was it better for blacks to work hard Labour and get paid next to nothing? Wasit better that the majority were subjected to serve the interest of the minority?

Those white people complaining to get apartheid back must leave this country. They don't like it here than they can move to Europe where there ancestors came from. You say this but look at South Africa today it’s considered a third world country. During apartheid the country was considered a first world, we were producing nearly all our own goods but nowadays it’s changed. Unfortunately and this is the hard truth economically SA was better during apartheid and the second hard truth is that you can’t give black people a country to govern over because they will run it into the ground

@@GoodVideos4 You sound like a logical believer and I can respect that. You believe in God but understand that not everything in the bible is either correct or infallible. With that being said, I'd like you to check something out and see what you think about it. The jews have a holy book that's second only to the Torah, it's called the Talmud. In that book they not only mock Christianity, they say the most vitriolic things about the believers and their holy men. They actually call the virgin Mary a whore amongst many other incredibly disrespectful things. The most incredible claim is this, they say that Jesus was just a human and that he's not the product of an immaculate conception rather he's the results of a torrid and forbidden love triangle. They claim that Jesus father was a Roman soldier!! They even have the name of the soldier, his name was "pantera" and they even have the dates of his birth and death! I know it sounds crazy but this is not my own thoughts, it's actually part of their doctrines. They talk about how good it was for "that pig" to die on a cross and they express satisfaction at leaving him naked and stealing his clothes. They say Christians are basically stupid and that they manipulated our teachings to always have us believe that "they" are superior to us and that well always be subservient to them. I'm not gonna to you to read all the books of the Talmud, but you can even Google some of this stuff and it pops right up. Google something like "Jesus real father was a Roman soldier named pantera" and just read some of that stuff yourself. I warn you tho, if you have any love or respect at all for Jesus Christ, you should at the very best and least, get infuriated. It made me have a strong dislike for Jewish people and it made me realize that these people are salt of the earth. They manipulated our religion and most abrahamic religions to put them in a favorable light. Check it out and tell me what you think about it. Just 1 quick Google search and you'll be in a rabbit hole

South Africa is obviously a very complicated country. Without having lived there, it is extremely difficult to explain...for example, I knew an older black guy who mourned the day apartheid ended as he felt there was now no structure in life. Also, the majority of South Africans (Black and White) are friendly and not racist. In the pubs and bars of the Western Cape, I knew an Afrikaner farmer's wife who collected every night to fund an aids charity for babies who couldn't afford treatment. Also, I was almost mugged in Cape Town late one night, and a black stranger rushed over to help me (a white stranger) out.

Lastly black South Africans are very forgiving, which is something not many acknowledge.

South Africa was hardly populated at all before white men arrived there . We now have to listen to Ignoramuses reinventing history to suit their political goals -now go back into money extortion scheme which is your ultimate goal as well as a desire to rule over whites and steal their wealth .NOW DOES IT EXPLAIN IT ALL WELL ? Before white men arrived in Africa cannibalism / tribal warfare . slavery . voodoo ,epidemies NAKED TITS and millions dying prematurely was a normalcy . nobody asked blacks to keep immigrating from surrounding countries into South Africa .if blacks did not liked better economical prospects in SA then they should have stayed where they were born .You blacks keep playing victims and yell racism but if not for white men you would still live in straw huts and run naked around HOW CAN YOU EXPECT SO DIFFERENT PEOPLE TO BE NOT SEPERATED , WHITE EUROPEANS WERE AND ARE CENTURIES AHEAD FROM BLACKS

Your human rights. What about mine. I am white. Why do blacks discriminate against me just because of my colour but I am not allowed to. Although they stole my stuff and killed my mother. There is no such thing as 'human' rights'. We are all human. Society has rights individuals don't have rights. That is the worst discrimination.

@@samuelswanepoel7926 Yeah, but did I as black man, personally do harm to you? Much more happens to minorities. But no one said it was "alright" to hate white people. This is simply a symptom of hate. Hatred breeds more hatred. It's ALL wrong.

Apartheid was also from the Netherlands. There was a time in Europe when there was a dividing line between Catholic and Protestant areas, or predominately those. The dividing line ran through the Netherlands, hence separate schools, etc. It was called pillarisation.

Nobody forced the black women to work for whites, and they certainly didn't do it for free. By far S Africa continued their racist apartheid far longer than other African nations, but not all whites were in support of it. As much as Cecil Rhodes is demeaned today, it was his efforts that ended the Afro-Arab slave trade north of SA in N and S Rhodesia. Even among tribes in SA the Zulu fought against other tribes, especially the San, and the thousands of tribes across Africa still harbor hatred for other blacks. Just think of the Tutsi and the Hutu in Rwanda and Burundi. The only country where whites killed so many blacks was in the Belgian Congo.

We coloureds suffer fore 300 years and more. We still suffer under the ANC saying we coloureds eat with the white people during apartheid which is a lie. Thousands of of our uncestors die at the Cape slave lodge and Castle. White people do not want to adress the history of the Indian and Pacific Oceans slave trade ; thats wy many coloureds do not kno we arived on slaveships ; but the evidence is still at the Cape Slave Lodge.
