Dante Basco is a filipino american actor, dancer, poet, producer and writer. He’s starred in nearly 30 films, and dozens of TV shows. He is most known (to me) as prince zuko from avatar the last air bender (if you havent been able to tell after all these episodes) he also played the iconic rufio in the 1991 spielberg's film, Hook.

@@yoda5436 While that's true, I think you really have to take in the mental ages here. Kataang and Zutara have the same age gap, but mentally they're in very different places when compared to each other. Zuko and Katara, for example, have both been forced to grow up much faster than Aang, and are subsequently in very similar emotional places. Aang had a lot of responsibility placed onto him when he was still with the air nomads, but he had been sheltered from the worst of that responsibility by Monk Gyatso. Zuko and Katara have never had someone to shelter them or help them through the worst of their traumas, which is something that i think they can bond over. All I'm saying is that, in this case, I don't think the physical ages matter all that much. Aang is less emotionally mature than Katara, and I think that really puts a bit of a strain on their relationship, because they find it hard to understand or relate to each other, and Aang's childishness is really one of the main reasons that I, and many other Zutara shippers, see Kataang as a more motherly relationship, whereas I see Zutara as a more romantic, passionate relationship. (If it had been properly developed in canon.)

SonnieBee what you’re forgetting is that katarra and aang weren’t a thing until the end of the show where aang has about all of the worlds responsibilities put on him, every person he ever knew closely was dead, there was a war that had destroyed many civilizations that was then thrown upon his shoulders, and he had to master every element within the span of a summer, and then he did do all that, and you’re trying to tell me he didn’t have to grow up fast, come on man, also zuko did not really grow up, he was still a brash angry little until very late in the show, I think zutarra makes some sense and the writers were definitely trying to do a team aang team zuko type thing, but the couple that became cannon makes the overall most sense with the way the show progressed.

I was honestly blown away and very surprised!

The scriptwriters definitely seemed to prefer Zutara, though. Especially Aaron Ehasz and his wife Elizabeth, who were behind changing Toph into a girl rather than a muscular man that rivals Aang for Katara's affection, Zuko's redemption arc, making Katara into someone other than just a healer and Aang's "love interest" - Aaron especially has spoken about how he and the crew wanted Zutara to be endgame, but the show creators Bryan and Michael were against it (they hate Zutara and think it's nothing more than a dark ship).

The Ehasz, who fleshed out Zuko’s character arc, Toph, and much of the story in general, have repeatedly said in interviews that Zuko and Katara coming together was the plan until the Ehasz couple left because of creative differences with the other two creators, and that’s when the story was rushed more and Katara was pushed for Aang. But a 15 year old girl going with a 12-13 year old boy wouldn’t make a lick of sense in their maturity and commonalities (it’s like a 6-7 grader going with a 10th grade girl...it’s weird.)

I think Zutara would've actually happened. Remember when Katara got her fortune told? The fortune teller said she will marry a powerful bender. But the fortune teller said she can't predict Aang's love life-well he knew. But he can shape his own fate. Which means, if Aang didn't make a move at all or if he would've not eavesdropped, she would most likely end up with Zuko. The only reason they feel awkward when they saw Zutara in the play they watched was because they already hold someone in their heart and they both know who it was for each other. Zuko and Katara could've really developed their relationship to that.

Don't worry, Dante. I see a lot of actors who do voice acting primarily as voice actors. Whenever I think of Mark Hamill, I don't see Luke Skywalker. I see him first as the Joker, then Fire Lord Ozai, then Luke Skywalker. I revere voice actors more than live actors for some reason.

I personally am happy with Kataang happening, I felt they had a lot of chemistry and they just worked. But if Zutara had happend, I would've loved it too because they had a lot of chemistry too and fire and water do go well together. It's kind of like Yin and Yang. Plus Zuko took a lightning bolt for Katara... Either ship really works honestly, and I think it makes sense that Dante ships Zutara

I find it funny that he’s surprised how people took to him playing an animated character the same if not more as a live action character, but I’ll say this: there’s never been a voice actor to me that has just so... used their real essence and personality so seamlessly. Maybe a lot of voice actors will put on a sort of different persona or performance when they’re playing an animated character and that is part of the reason why, but with Dante I just.. it’s like Zuko’s in the way he says everything. It’s insane to be how much I sit and watch him talk and there’s just no difference. He was just himself, as the character when he did it. Blows my mind.
