I have been into photography for 25 years and consider myself a semi-protog. For the life of me I could not explain to my son on how light works. I then remembered watching some of your videos in the past and I must say you are the most technical photographer on-line. This video was perfect for my son. Thank You so much for what you have done for my son along with other future photographers.

Great explanation. If one doesn't understand the 4 principles of LISA (Light-ISO-Shutter-Aperture), they'll be floating in a sea of intellectual uncertainty....I had always heard these terms but never knew how they interacted with each other. I am new to DSLR and I appreciate the visuals and speed of presentation. I'll be watching a few more times for sure. Thank you. It's like "ahaaa" and then moments later, "now what number did he say?" It's very reassuring that I can pause and go back. Goal 1: learn more about how manual settings on my camera work. Goal 2: improve my photos. Goal 3: Add to #1 and #2. I am also going on my 4th mission trip to the central Visayas region of the Philippines. For me to capture not only the beauty of the area but also the beauty of the people in their daily life is something I aspire to do more effectively. I am excited about my new camera and know that I will probably revert more to the program mode, but I do want to branch into more manual settings when capturing specific moments is not quite so critical.

Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), the founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, it's always ISO.

"the founders decided to give it the short form ISO" What founders? This was a choice by camera manufactures and the photographers they work with. The ISO itself doesn't care what term people use to describe light sensitivity. However, if you want to talk about it using a standard, then ISO 12232:2006 is a good one to use, and camera manufacturers decided to just call it "ISO" instead of "The arithmetic light sensitivity rating defined by ISO 12232:2006".

Another nice video! ISO is actually, AFAIK, International Organization for Standardization and ASA is American Standards Association. ASA and ISO in cameras are technical specifications done on these two organizations when film got standardized. It's similar to WiFi b, g and n - they are actually IEEE 802.11a, b, g and n. IEEE is the International Electronics and Electric Engineering. It is an acronym but for Photography it means what you said. Very good class, Mr. Northrup. When I was a child, I started to see birds on the wall of my room ... and I discovered they were coming from a window at the kitchen and the light went through a keyhole and the image was formed in the dark room. This lead me to try and learn more about these things. You are doing something similar here - hands on teaching!

Toni, I have watch many tutorial videos on youtube. But I best understand the way you teach. I used to be an ok amature photographer years back with 35mm film. When digital came in, my expensive equipment became obsolete. I set that hobby aside for many years now. Last week I picked up a slightly used nikon D5200 and lenses. I feel like a total novice again learning these cameras. They are different from my 35mm. Thanks. I think my learning curve will be quick since I dont have to write every setting down and wait for film to be developed. I'm looking forward to learning from you.

Great video... I take photos for a living almost by accident and just had to start figuring some things out by myself. It wasn't something I was even interested in until the last year or so and now I'm starting to take a little pride in it and actually want present my work the best I can as a photographer with absolutely no training. Thank you for posting!

Thanks for the wise words! I bought a beginner's little $200 Fujifilm S8200 a few weeks ago, and I'm too inexperienced to start shooting in manual.. I only use manual when taking night time shots or when I want to experiment with different shutter speeds and stuff. I watch videos like this so that I can start to understand photography even more.. I know the basics, but I want to know EVERYTHING! Haha

It's in at least one other video, and he again calls it "Dad". I think it's literally a bobblehead of his Dad. Not sure if custom or his Dad is famous and they're just available on the market.

This is very well explained! One tiny error that bugs me however is that ISO IS an acronym that stands for International Standards Organization. It used to be ASA (for those old enough to remember) which stood for American Standards Association.

+Luke Petersen In your comment, i think you should decrease the ISO when you decrease the aperture (open) because open aperture means more lights so you need less sensitive captures or you will get a little extra bright picture.

This Tutorial really was immensely helpful in very fundamental understanding of Basic Photography. As well it was far more helpful as well because you properly took the time to not only explain, but “show” via demonstration of the various photos from the setup what happens when you change settings, lighting etc that in my mind it makes sense. Now these things make so much more sense in settings. One the best Tutorials I’ve seen here.
