I'm also guilty of buffer trails on my hood when i first started buffing with a rotary. Rookie mistakes can happen to anyone but i learned alot from guys like you and thanks to ya'll i'm much better at detailing!

First Yes, incredible how haters leave nasty comments and those who don't finish the job correctly because definitely don't know how to do the job and charge people as if everything was correctly done. Also depends on the type of job, if enhancement or correction. Anyway, if enhancement it is noticable since there is consistency upon the marks left different from a poorly job performed.

Years ago I struggled with this because my boss never taught me proper correction, just handed me a rotary and told me Ill burn through on edges, I know so much more now from watching channels like Brians, have my own company now and my quality is top notch, thanks Brian

Michigan here.. just a guy in my garage.. was doing great with my old 5 inch dual action but thought I needed to step up to a 3 inch to get even better results.. bought an inexpensive one from Amazon and now I get to learn how to remove holograms... Guess the dual action part didn't work so well for it.. Was great at getting out the scratches I was after but once the car was in the sun after its first wash... Would say it is embarrassing but that is how one learns.. Glad you have a video just for the issue I have.

Actually awesome! Kudos for finishing out with a rotary _and_ showing the results in bright sunlight - it's the first time I am seeing that. I was beginning to think it was impossible with a rotary because it was very difficult to see without (certain types of) direct sun - even with decent lighting/ torches. Typically the solutions have been 'reach for a DA'. Thanks 😊

I am one of those new learners... have a tuxedo black Ford raptor and I tried to get scratches out with a two in one buffer/polisher using a rotary and then put an extra coat of wax with a wool pad... all the scratches came out and I thought it looked great... until to my surprise I saw in the sunlight very noticeable as you say buffer trails. So I came here to try to learn how to get them out. Going to try again just with the pad and microfiber cloth as you did in the video and skip the wool polishing pad. Thanks 😊

So straight forward thanks just watching videos I see exactly where I went wrong wrong pad, rushed it, did this on a work day so that’s why I rushed etc..

I am guilty of this as I polished for the first time.I used a Ryobi mini polisher which worked great and at the tail end of a section I messed up. Thanks for this video, now I will fix it.

Still learning however, I see what you mean by how fast the rotary can remove defects! Brian, the worst is it’s not always the cheapo detailer that does this. Every dark colour vehicle I have done that came from dealership has buffer trails. Even new ones! Last one was a full size pickup black with Diamond Kote ceramic coating. Holograms sealed under the coatings!!! Body shop expensive insurance jobs are the worst. They leave a mess and collect huge money.

I would get those with a cheap rotary buffer.. changed to a DA buffer and like magic ! No marks ! Also used 2 step method . One to get scratches out , the other lighter pad and polishing compound

There is 'NO ONE' here in central Oklahoma that I have found, willing to tackle a 2019 RAM 1500 Bighorn with Black Crystal paint. My wife's truck is in desperate need of a complete scratch and swirl mark removal.

I recently purchased a 2019 Mercedes-Benz at a Mercedes dealership and my vehicle is riddle in buffer swirl marks 🤦 I'll be using this technique to remove them thanks for the video 👍

I see a lot of mobile detailers and guys going into business just to turn a buck. Some are learning on the job and using one steps because they don’t know the difference between compounding & polishing. Apparently this customer knows the difference and ended up going to a true professional.

Watching this because I did this to my car lol. Only my 2nd time polishing. Still trying to learn.

I do the same thing as you are here and it looks great the moment I'm done with the buffer polishing..But for some reason, brand new microfiber towels are putting in streaks and smudging everything,,and I mean towels new never used right out of the wrapper..I am using the same amount of product as you are when compounding and polishing...Hopefully someone has an idea for me....I have been told by a paint and body guy I know to wash down after I'm done polishing with Dawn dish detergent to get rid of the issue,..I can't tell if there is excess wax causing the microfiber towels to streak...I've done IPA wipedowns too,,same thing......Maybe I'm missing something very simple...I will say my speed was little higher on my polish stage than my compound stage....I was taught this...

Yes hate buffer tracks, especially when I go back to the the car dealership where I worked back in 1986, and all the new and used vehicles are all swirled up, NASTY

Body shop detailer here, I can help explain why many body shops in particular tend to leave swirls behind: To keep a job in most body shops, you need to know how to use a rotary- but you really, generally, only need to get passable with it. When you get a car in that has been in a collision, the system only gives you .3 hours (three tenths of an hour, also known as 18 minutes) to sand, buff, polish, and wax each panel that has been repainted. Anything over that and you're costing the shop money. So, most body shop guys learn how to sand, buff, and quickly polish out panels, and then maybe cover their tracks with wax, because time is money. So, when they go to buff a whole car, their entire experience of buffing is "get this frickin car out of here quickly". If we do the math from the system, you get a little over 3 and a half hours to buff, polish, and wax a typical sedan. That's not enough for perfection, as good detailers know, but many customers don't care. Our shop does high-end work and detailing as well, but that's because my dad (the owner of our shop) built the business with trust and high quality being paramount. For a repaint going through insurance for example though, that whole door better be sanded and buffed in less than 18 minutes, because the insurance will not pay for anything more.

That paint makes it difficult to see the difference on camera. It creates a weird effect. I'll have to apply this information to a test panel to practice. Thanks for the information Brian.

I love how 3D One works/performs but don't like the oily residue it leaves. Koch Chemie as per what I see on the videos works excellent as well, just curious to know if it's easier to wipe off than 3D.

Iam struging with haze marks and smears left behind on a new black escalade. What are the best products and pads to use on it. Polish and pad combo and a high gloss spray wax?

I bought a cheap ass DA ($30) and went over my whole truck. Needless to say it’s absolute trash hahah. But the good news--while waiting for my Chem Guys TorqX and pads I’ve watched hundreds of KZfaq vids and am pretty aware of what I did. Way too fast, way to big of areas at a time.

People are alway upset when I tell them how much paint correction is. They're like, I know a guy who can do it for less... Then by all means, go to him.. and you can come back to me when you get holograms in your hood 😂

Thanks. I'd also be interested to know whether it might be possible to finish out better with a more aggressive pad/polish combo. I was watching a glass polishing video, and they were moving the (rotary) machine in quite random patterns, which I assume was done to minimise "buffer trails". One pattern they used quite a lot was circular motions of the machine - kinda like a manually implemented random orbital motion.

With all the different polishes and pads available today , along with great vids from APEX...no reason to get swirls in the paint

The Rotary is the best tool if you know how to use it . Yes Halograms are a by product but if your experienced enough you can completely leave No Halograms with the Rotary if you know how !! The DA or old Rotary polishing machines will remove any Halograms with the use of a finishing cream. It’s all about practicing and patience.

I noticed all the shops here that charge 100$ buffs leave nasty rotary marks. But that's why it cost 100$ 😂😂

I’d Like To Know or, At Least, To Have an Idea, Why a Few Detailers Use IPA Every Time After a Set of Passes (With Either Polisher) To Assess The Result, While Others, Like Yourself, Don’t. had a long scratch from the local car wash. tunnel which was a easy fix. But the Detail manager decided to do the job himself. and buffed out the whole Blk SUV Escalade and left it like that. ! ugh Bro it’s a Limousine. truck. i can’t have those in there. They just down care !

Just out of curiosity…I’m noticing more uses with Koch Chemie and not 3D One. Are we liking Koch Chemie better? I’m intimidated by all the different cuts with the Koch Chemie line. Just looking for opinions.

Not to nit pick . But.. to the upper left of center emblem , near corner ( drivers side ) I seen some slight hazing or swirl marks , it could be the lighting 😝

Wearing a jock strap will help you get them out faster. I’ve been detailing for 90 years. Dog hair on an sos pad with make any paint shine like it was brand new. The dog hair must come from as close to the dogs butthole as possible. Hope this helps!!!

Is there a reason why a lot of pros use a dual action polisher? When ever I see a dual action polish on a vehicle I see the dual action marks. I think a detailer should always look to learn all the time and keep up with the new products when ever you see one come out. Do research on the product

I started off using DA machines, then learned rotary. Since that I've rarely ever use the DA unless I'm working ultra soft clear and just want to jewell the finish.

That's the difference between a car wash detail and a Profesional detail. Unfortunately, the majority of car owners won't see it unless it is pointed out to them.

Im reading all the trash talk here, but the reality is different. Some people (like me) want to do things properly, but lack proper light. Unless you have proper lighting, you will go "oh that's awesome, I nailed it". Until the car gets into sunlight. You will not solve the problem problem if you are not aware of it.

Around where I live detail shops only want to pay employees $50 on average to do a full detail so they don't take the time to do it right.

There will come a day when more and more customers will know how to differentiate a good work from a crap one and that will be their ultimate doom ...
