The film begins with sections from the lives of the Mayan people who live happily in their villages. A group of soldiers who came to the village plunder the village and take the women as slaves and the men to be sacrificed according to the Mayan tradition. Children are left in the village.

You know Mel Gibson has always been praised for spectacle and critized for loading his movies with christian-conservative ideology. This movie is pure spectacle and zero ideology, it is not a historical movie, but an action-chase movie with a historical setting and that is what makes it so special. It is definitely his best! I wish more directors would have the guts to port their action movies into interesting and new settings! It makes for better film.

All these artists are my favorite characters from Apocalypse. This is how a most brilliant director could direct it historically and ethnically accurately. Gibson is the best!

I would never call APOCALYPTO an "accurate" movie.... historically! Which doesn't mean it's not a quite interesting -- and even unique -- cinematic achievement.

Мэл Гибсон талантливый режиссер и актер. Прекрасно передал историческую эпоху, настолько правдоподобно актеры сыграли. Как точно сняты массовые сцены города, куда привели пленных. Мэл Гибсон снял фильм о Христе. Это шедевр!
