Fifty years ago, we sent the first astronauts to walk on the moon’s face. But what they brought back is just as important as what got them there. I’m talking about moon rocks, guys. And I got to go visit NASA’s lunar sample vault to learn more about them! NASA’s moon rock collection has helped us learn so much about the early solar system, the formation of rocky planets like ours, and where our moon came from. And let me tell you, the story of our moon is a VIOLENT one. It involves the word “magmoon”. That’s an awesome word! Enjoy this video, and I hope you learn not just some lunar geology, but also how exploring the moon helped change what the space program was all about.

JUST TO CLARIFY: I did *not* actually get a moon rock. That was a joke. There was no lunar heist. No NASA caper. 🤓 What's inside NASA's moon rock vault? Duh… MOON ROCKS! But there's also a LOT MORE. Inside that vault we can find the story of the moon itself. Geology rocks, huh? Be sure to check out videos from our friends Smarter Every Day and Objectivity, too. I'm on Twitter and Instagram @DrJoeHanson/@okaytobesmart go tag yourself watching this video!

How big would the earth be if we added the mass of the moon to earth? I know google but math and me are not friends. Could this added mass be enough to turn the earth in to a super earth? And if so could this be the answer to why our planet earth is so small compared to other earth-like planets that has been found?

I was allowed to examine a small moon rock. In 1985 My father had his '26 Chrysler rodester restored and took the car to a man who had restored a car for one of the first astronauts who had been on the noon. This same one also happened to return to earth with more weight in their re-entrey vehicle than NASA anticipated. He used the rock to pay part of his bill to restore his antique Rolls (i think it was a Rolls.) This car restorer died before dad's car was restored. In the Houston Post it was reported some time after the car guys death that NASA was planning on "accepting" these rocks just as soon as they were "returned" to their proper home (proper home is according to NASA, only NASA of course). The rock was, to me anyway, just like pumice. Same look and light weight feel.

I grew up less than a mile from the back gate of NASA. Moon rocks used to be kept in this old two story red brick building, looked kind of like an old house, although I doubt theyre there any longer. The spacecraft center was always just my friendly neighbor, someone to pal around with on a Saturday afternoon. I'm tickled you were able to meet my "old friend", and thank you for the visit back home.

Fun fact - our moon is probably the main reason why intelligent could evolve here. It stabilizes our axial tilt to the point that our orbital climate changes are small - operating on frequencies of around 23,000 and 41,000 years (+eccentricity). Moonless Mars, its orbital configuration is way wobbly (straying off between 0 and 70 degrees off its orbital plane).

At 9:25 - "By the end of the Apollo era, we weren't just sending Air Force rocket jockeys up there..." Actually, the first men to walk on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Neil Armstrong was a civilian. Buzz Aldrin, while a member of the Air Force, possessed a masters degree and a doctorate degree from MIT. "Air Force rocket jockeys" isn't exactly the term I would use to describe these guys. This seems like another case of "scientists" forgetting those who make science possible. Respect.
