Appalachian Coal Towns - Then and Now
We've traveled through much of Appalachian coal country and noticed how some of the buildings and houses in the towns we visit have maintained and restored while others have fallen into ruins or disappeared altogether. There are a lot of factors that have caused these different outcomes and it is sad that they can't all be saved, but that is just the reality of the world we live in.
We hope you enjoy this video taking a look at some of the changes.

"I owe my soul to the Company Store" from the Song SIXTEEN TONS by Tennessee Ernie Ford in the '50s. I recall the complicated history of company coal towns. Those beautiful grand buildings were paid for by the sweat and the misery of all those miners and their families crammed in those miserable little company shanties in the background. The back breaking long hours in the horrid, dangerous working conditions of those mines! I grew up in central WVa where most families had lost at least one male member to mine accidents. We were lucky... in a way. Our mining uncles made it to retirement in their 60s but then died a few years later from Black Lung.

Going to work at the break of dawn walking to their destinations without hesitation. Taking another day in stride just trying to get by, keeping a roof over their heads and bread on the table. Saying hello at the door to the family then off to the shower to shed the dark dread of the Earth's inter crust on their bodies. Sitting down for dinner thankful to all be together, sharing Grace and stories of their day that they each embrace. This is what they know, hard work, loyalty, pulling their load without discord and never thinking it would ever end this way.

I can't say why I feel so bad for the loss of jobs in and around the central coal mines and related jobs,and All the pilitics that were played on the people.. But like me retiring early with a back thay can barely take care of me. Our Strong and Brave American 💪 workers gave our jobs All that we could give to take care of our families Without Government assistance. I have several relatives that worked the mines near Hazard,Ky. Proud workers that were left with a short retirement and the politicians shut down tobacco,mining,logging,dairy farmers going bankrupt. Why don't they fix their problems without making more for honest hard workers like I know are in those mining states? Why? Use your votes carefully!
@Tenebarum
@Tenebarum 2 жыл бұрын
@@francisjaniewski5990 That’s why they hand out crazy checks, Medicaid and food stamps. It gets the votes and keeps the votes by having people depend on subsistence. We will pay to put terrorists up in a pricey Boston neighborhood, but our own people are put out like this. Thanks you’uns for fueling the industrial revolution. But we have to let you go now. Every miner and miner’s family should be paid for their contribution. We wouldn’t be a superpower without them.

Well I am a cowboy here in Texas and my mom's family is from Floyd County Kentucky, McDowell, Martin and around High Hat. My mom just turned 83 and is bed ridden. She has beginning stages of Dementia but some days she will talk about nothing else but KY, and going up the mountain 1 more time. Dad's been gone 3 years and most days she asked me why she hasn't seen him in a few days. I wish you would do something about Southeast KY. Just writing this brought me to tears. Thanks for the videos I show them to her when she's here. God bless you and your family

Thank y’all for doing this! I’m from Letcher county Ky and one place y’all may wanna consider visiting is Seco. It’s right outside of the town I’m from which is Fleming Neon. Seco got its name from South East Coal company. The company store still stands. The owner of it also owns some of the camp houses. He now has a winery in the company store in one section (yes I’m serious lol). Some of the camp houses are now bed and breakfast places. He’s super nice and may even give you a tour.

So weird, I just mentioned Seco to Melody a couple days ago and I was wondering if the winery was still open becaus I havent been there in 4 or 5 years. So glad to hear it is still theres that's fantastic. Do you happen to know who we would need to contact there?

I’ve been thinking of moving to Southwest Virginia from rural Upstate NY. I’m not sure why. The weather seems very nice and the quality of people seems good. The lack of populated areas is great as well. It just seems like a peaceful area and great in many ways, yet not many people are racing to move there. Seems like my kind of place. Would you recommend Southwest Virginia?

Mr Lee owned a bunch of movie houses (what they called them way back in the day) I remember several Lee theaters in the Roanoke and Botetourt seems he cornered the market in this area for movie houses. Unfortunately one of Mr Lee's venues turn into a theater of illreprute so to say XXX movie house in Roanoke. It closed down way before my 18th birthday. Shame what has become of some. If'n you are interested I found one of Virginia's oldest community's in Virginia states it started 1746 I think that is what I read ill update it when I decide to drive that way. And most is still standing a standing beautifully if I may say so most houses are original. And most are log cabins. And if you blink you will surely miss it and most don't even know about it. I was shocked and had to read the historical sign again.

Grew up in Bluefield, VA about a mile from the WV state line. Left in 1987 and will never live there again. The ignorance and poverty is too toxic and too thick to ever return. I appreciate what you all are doing in a sense but it's a highly romanticized view of a past long dead.
