Really enjoy these sayings. The one about burning sassafras I had never heard of, but if you do burn a sassafras log in a fireplace it will give out flames of many colors. I have even seen green and a purple hue. Never had that with any other type of wood.

I think My Grandaddy was the most superstitious person I ever knew! He use to say.... if you go to bed singing you'll wake up crying. He also said it was bad luck to sing at the table. He said a lot of things you just told about too!

Granny always said if your nose itches, somebody's comin' with a hole in his britches....go to bed singin' you will wake up cryin'.... if you sing at the table, it means you want to get married....Granny had a saying or superstition for everything, wish I had written them all down. Her and Grandpa were from Mississippi, such strong, kind, loving folks. I sure miss them.

I love these superstitions! --If that's what they really are; we heard some from kind who said that if something went missing or your cows and livestock did poorly, just wait: the next person to come to your door is the person doing that. And of course you bury a piece of iron, even a horseshoe, at your threshold and they can't cross it.

When we moved as kids Mama cut small pieces of our hair and put it in the door frame to protect us against haints. And didn't go to funerals if she was pregnant. If your hand itches your getting money and if your nose itches you're gonna have company. We had mixed greens and black eyed peas on new year. Spring was poke eating time for our blood. Many times we go walking gathering polk and wild greens for supper. We were poor but we ate good. Hang a horse shoe upen end up above the door for good luck. My Daddy always said that about the cows and the fish.

Where when winds out of the east, theres a feeling associated with it, where seemed to always held true. Just before a storm or a front, fish bite very good, which I had good luck. Where theres simply effects that make shrimp run, etc. Farmers Almanac seems to have a lot to share. Like plant below ground crops as carrots, potatoes on a descending moon, above ground crops on a growing moon. Which the light the plant receives affects how it grows, as well as lack of light.

I love all the mountains that surround us here. The stories hold me captivated so much of the time. Some are so heartbreaking. I listened to a few today that were so good. The one about the Mountain Maiden I think it was called was so sad .
