Thank you for your service! I love Mary Jane Farm dehydrated food. I buy the Bare Burrito in bulk, then divide it into single portions for lunch. I can add water to the bag in the morning and by lunch it's ready to eat. Great on a tortilla with cheese. I also got the Durston Kakwa 55 last year to use on the JMT. Loved it! I'm looking forward to watching you on your AT adventure.

Wow, mid-March will put you right in the middle of the bubble. Hope you are ready for crowds in the shelters and hostels. Started my through hike 16 Feb 2023 and summited 18 July. I know you are watching tons of videos but I hiked with a couple last year: HappyCampHares and yes they have a youtube channel. I think his pack was a 40L and hers was a bit smaller. They started just a week behind me so yes, they did have some cold weather gear. Plus, his luxury items were fresh coffee beans, grinder and french press - he did a short video on making coffee. Anyway, I was very curious how they divided gear, divided camp chores, etc. so they did a video. I was surprised they started with one food bag that he carried but quickly adjusted so they each carried their own. Yes, they shared during stops, but each had their own. I think he carried the tent and she carried all the tent accessories. She carried the cook set and he carried the fuel. PLus they had a bit of camera gear. Anyway, if your curious give them a look. Not only were they pretty light weight but they were fast. Best of luck out there. We will be following. Oh, final note; if you get bit by the long distance hiking bug and decided to do other hikes, consider applying to Warrior Expedition. If selected, they will provide almost all of your gear. IMHO the best ground sheet is a piece of TYVEX. Throw it in the washer, do two cycles gentle no soap, then tumble dry low heat.

Yea, our timeline only really allowed us to start in March so we’ve been mentally preparing for the bubble struggles lol. I know this is a social trail and that’s one of the biggest reasons we chose this over the CDT or the PCT. We’re both extroverts so crowds won’t be the end of the world for us 🤪 and thanks for the suggestion on that channel - I’ll definitely check them out!

Used the Kakwa and the Durston pro on my thru hike in 2023. Loved them! Used the Durston groundsheet because the polycryo tore. Used the same Thermarest pad too, very warm. Couldn’t sleep with all my layers on even with a Feb 3 start. BTW the liteAF fanny pack worked great with the Kakwa. I picked mine up at my first hostel stop at Around The Bend hostel along with another battery pack.

I’m honestly not super optimistic about the polycro haha. But some people say it has lasted them for miles and miles but we’ll see 😂

Thanks for your service! Retired Coastie myself (retired in 2012 from Sector Del Bay after 21 years) and also did an awesome tour in Guam ... I'd love to hear your USCG story sometime! You'll love the AT and we're stoked to watch your journey. My wife hiked the AT in 2018 (started on March 15) and our kids and I followed in our little RV (I'm into short hikes and hiking gear, but thru-hiking isn't my thing). Happy Trails!

@@heather__hikes ... You guys have inspired me to try and make a dehydrated version of Kelaguen and Finadene when we get back to the states in May (we're living on a beach in Thailand right now - rough life, LOL). I bet it would be pretty easy to do and would kick butt on a tortilla on trail.

Loved this . I'll watch again as I didn't pick up on some name brrand items. Really helpful, especially the mention of cold weather wear. Cutious, do you intend to use a "bear bucket". Or strictly a hanging method. Thanks for posting.

Very nice kit. I think for vlogging 20,000Mah is the minimum, also don't forget about a fast charging wall plug, super underlooked feature.

Yea I was going back and forth seeing if I needed to add a second power bank but this might be a ‘figure it out as we go’ and grabbing one on trail if need be haha.

@@heather__hikes true, I guess the only concern would be having enough ports to charge everything at once, since you will have 3 power banks (if you add one) 2 phones, and accessories.
