"Why have they done this to us? It would be better if they killed me!" Chan Meng yells. That was six years ago, when he was first evicted from his home. Now he lives in a motley shack the size of a garden shed, with half the roof missing and mosquito larvae writhing in the shower recess. Like many evictees Chan Meng has found himself in temporary accommodation and could be moved on again at any time. "They want to move us around like cats and dogs!" These days the parlous, unpredictable reality for thousands of Cambodia's poor is that of being forcibly evicted from their houses in the name of progress. Cambodia's land ownership was thrown into chaos when Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge extinguished private title. Now money and corruption are playing havoc with the country's attempts to bring back private property. There is one brave group known as the BK13 - 13 women - that are not prepared to let greedy developers take the very, very little they have. But with half a million residents forcibly evicted in recent years, it's an enormous fight they have on their hands. "Every time we leave we face arrest and they beat us. We don't know if they will use violence against us or if we will lose our lives."

Everywhere in the world, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. In countries where corruption is rampant, it's even worse. It is a very tough cycle to break.

Cambodia and Laos are screwed up today because of the United States. It all started with the Richard Nixon who illegally bombed both countries killing over 2 million civilian men women and children. Afterwards america installed the corrupt Pol Pat government and many other corrupt governments in both Cambodia and Laos. America depended of both countries to help us during the Vietnam war. After the war was over we turned our back while those that helped us were slaughtered. I'm not Cambodian, but I know their history because I know american history. To know the true history of america is to know and understand interactions with all our wars. America owes the people of both Cambodia and Loas. These countries suffer from corruption to this day because of our CIA.

@@starwoodcharlie4697 I am in my early 30s and for as long as I have lived America has been the root of all evil wars around the world. The first one I recall was the war vs Iraq based on "they have weapons of mass destruction". They just lie and cheat themselves into any war, based on "human rights violations". This is why they intervened in Libya, and now there is open slave trade in Libya. I always wondered who is really pulling the strings of the USA and their foreign policy. Who wanted George Bush jr to tell these lies to justify war. Every war is about money and resources, so I tend to think that banks are in charge

anybody who's been there knows which country is responsible for flooding corrupt money into Cambodia and into politicians bank accounts. How one nation can dictate to another so overtly and openly is insane. Yet we do nothing.

I love Cambodia I first went in 2007 and went back in 2014 amd wow I was shocked it’s changed so much so sad. I was in shianoukville in 2007 and the old market was burnt down over night so the government could build on the land. So so sad. What a beautiful country just ruined by greed amd corruption.

As I am a Cambodian, I admit that our country is still living in corruption. Hospitality, industry, education, monetary, politics,... are still way behind amongst several countries around the world. Before I left Cambodia to study abroad in Australia, I had faced many difficult circumstances such as bribery. Particularly, for the public school students, they have to pay to their teachers every single day whilst the private school are drastically different. Every single year, we are doing charity to the schools in remote area. But I have one question, does charity improve our society or we should teach them manners and improve our education system more instead?

There is actually only one way to deal with this. ..... freeze those business men in Cambodia who have been known to behave like this. - sanction the country back to the Stone Age, and set in NGO to help those suffering now, let the rich ones loose their fortune if they did not get it ethically correct. .... after that - and after the goverment is put on notice and sanctioned, forbidden to travel, - then very soon things will change.

The crook crony leaders like Hun Sen sell out to multi-national corporations speculating land prices up. It's globalization of poverty or New World Order. This sort of capitalist change imposed against the majorities will is happening world wide in many places. If they evict them and offer another land area to move to then at least make the private developer that got the 90 year lease to build a few hundred septic tanks or a basic septic system on the land in which the people.must move to. Also drill 15 to 20 water wells. These are.the very least as a part of the deal. A small effort would save them years of Battle but a small effort will never happen because they lack the spirit of God. They have no kindness within them. You can't convince a crooked arrow to fly straight

As a person that has had my car stolen twice by someone who got caught and was uninsured it is not a petty crime. Also it is something we don't want and I have no sympathy for them, they had a chance to live in a much better country and they blew it, now they don't like it and are complaining they are hard done by but I say good serves them right, now they are getting what they deserve and they don't like it.

I sorry but I have to say it. If this is your reality where you have no home, don’t know where to lay your head, and the government constantly kicking you out of your home then why bring kids into your terrible situation?! Kids are precious and everyone what’s a family, I get it, but your situation is chaotic and frightening to say the lease so why add more kids to the family?

Because if you’re poor you probably don’t have access to education or things like condoms and Cambodia is extremely conservative they don’t know any better so they have kids often by accident
