The glorification of the homeland is the underlying theme of the songs in this programme. The sense of belonging, idealised and sustained by emotional ties to a language and a place, was one of the favourite poetic evocations of the 19th century. It is not a coincidence that this longing arose at the same time as the emergence of nationalist sentiment. Baritone Benjamin Appl offers this recital which includes works by Brahms, Schubert, Grieg, and Wolf.
