In this video I discuss how Apple continues to fight against the right to repair by implementing new measures to reduce the functionality of devices repaired by end users or 3rd party repair shops, the focus of this video is how face ID gets disabled when replacing the screen.

I wouldn't be surprised if apple would go as far as of their way to implement an "self-destruct" battery if you ever dare to repair it by yourself, or going to your local repair shop dude you like and trust. We know that li-ion (lithium ionized for short) batteries are very sensitive to air. If you remove the cover for it, the battery gets exposed to oxygen, and as a result, it explodes, while also releasing toxic gases.

This "calibration machine" reminds me a lot of the whole issue with McDonald's partnership with Taylor's ice cream machines. Nobody EXCEPT for a Taylor representative can access any of the error codes, set up the machine, or do any diagnoses or repair. And this is screwed up because it screws over the franchisee owner, just like apple's partnership with geek squad screwed over geek squad's repair rights. It's all about corporate $ making partnerships, which limit actual output and productivity. If you ever wonder why ice cream machines are down at McDonald's, it's not because of the employees or the manager, it's because of the blockage Taylor and McDonald's corporate implements in terms of the right to repair.

I’ve been disillusioned with iPhone ever since they got rid of the headphone jack. Oligopolies are the WORST.

Just buy a cheap phone then. I pay like, $150 for my phone outright and I now own it. No need to stay in the ecosystem, just buy a new one if it breaks, don’t gotta pay a monthly fee for 2 years. Unless you’re not in a situation to spend that kind of money up front, which I totally understand. But if you have that kind of money it honestly is an easy switch. My break away from Apple was when they screwed me over trying to implement Apple Music. Got rid of a lot of the songs I purchased on iTunes and their customer support is so shit that I just decided to get an Android with Spotify instead. At this point my only Apple product is my 7 year old iPad, which is surprisingly still good. One of the big appeals to Apple products is that they work seamlessly together, but at this point, Android does too since it goes through your google account. The only gripe I have with my galaxy phone is that I can’t video call people. Most of the people I would video call I can just go through Snapchat so it’s not a big deal, but it’s rather annoying.

My sister recently got her iPad repaired third-party. Now, we believe the person who repaired it just did a shoddy job as the home button doesn't work full stop and moves in the slot but there was a notification saying Touch ID couldn't be enabled. The fact that it gave a notification as well makes me think that maybe something like this happened to my sister too. Either that or iOS knows when you have broken hardware.

I repair phones for a living. This feature is not new, it’s the same for the iPhone X and beyond. This has been this way for years so I’m surprised people are suddenly mad about this now but not then. Shit, even for the iPhone 6s, 7, and 8 the Touch ID gets disabled if you change out the home button. This is actually a precaution so that your phone can’t be stolen then unlocked just by changing the screen or home button ( trust me people have tried) and to prevent 3rd party repaired phones to be traded in. I understand the outrage as it makes repairs in shop ridiculously tedious, but I don’t understand why there’s so much outrage now vs when this was first implemented. I’d understand if Face ID was needed for the phone to function but it’ll behave the same way that it would with Face ID being turned off, with the biggest difference being that there will be a notification that won’t go away without the phone being re-repaired with an apple OEM screen/home button and proper calibration after the repair. Without the calibration the notification will still be there, even if you use a part directly from apple or use another phone’s screen. Again, it’s super frustrating and I personally hate it, but why now?? Why not get angry when this stuff first started years ago??
