The lightning cable is DEAD. Thanks to the European Union, Apple has to swap standards to what the rest of the world has been using for years. But if you want the full BENEFIT of USB-C, you might need to shell out some big bucks for the iPhone 15 Pro…

That's something that I can't wrap my mind around. Most people just use phones for scrolling social media, yet they are more than willing to shell out four figures for a device to do that on. I get most people aren't tech savvy, but when a $300 Chomebook can perform that same task, but with a much larger screen and probably better battery life, you'd think people would smarten up to buying flagship phones all the time.

Apple said Lightning will be the port for the next decade. That's why they kept it for exactly one decade. When Apple does stuff, people get extremely annoyed. Every time and no matter what. the double tap finger gesture for the apple watch isn't new. I haven't watched the keynote so idk if they actually advertised it as "new" but I've been using it for 2+ years already. It's an adaptive gesture so its function is contextual. I mostly use mine to pause/play media, it's SO freaking useful. A couple weeks ago I was doing house work (painting mostly) and had dirty hands or was wearing dirty/wet gloves. I had my iPhone playing through a bluetooth speaker and anytime i needed to pause, just double tap my finger to my thumb and boom, music paused without touching a single device with my grubby mitts! It's freaking awesome. And there are way more gestures too with clenching your fist/tapping fingers but I only use the simple double tap otherwise it gets a bit overcomplicated and less useful But yeah sick feature (but not new lol)

My guess was actually the opposite, that you don't accidentally trigger it while grabbing the handlebars but instead don't even have to let go of the handle bars to trigger it intentionally. Guess someone needs to test it. Also now that you say it, you might actually accidentally trigger the action when switching gears or braking. WatchOS 10s cycling features might actually rival names such as Garmin and Wahoo with just how easy and well made it is. It also helps that Strava automatically imports your workouts to their app, which is good because almost every cyclist uses Strava. My only gripes about it is the fact you cannot start a workout on your phone, only on your watch. And how theres no map intergration. If you want directions you need to have the app open on your phone instead of your stats, or use the watch for directions (which is actually pretty good, but not perfect.).

Plus people need to stop complaining about charging speed and learn to keep their phones at a good state of charge. Besides, fast charging harms the battery in the long run. Even the measly 20w or so charging apple allows now drains peoples battery health to 90% or so after a year of use (see a lot of 14 pro max’s around 90% health while mine is at 100%). I go out of my way to only use 5W charging for my 14 pro max, and have never found myself running out of battery. I typically use a USB port on my PC which can only output 5W max, or the USB port in my car which is also 5W. A old 5W wall wort would work too tho if you have one. Charges plenty fast imo and I also always keep my battery between 20 and 85%

I haven't used a cable for data since ios got over the air os updates and added backups to iCloud. This is probably true for most users, especially the non-pro/max/ultra (whatever suffix they are calling it) model ones. Lightning was basically a precursor to the USB-C design. It was amazing compared to its contemporary, mirco-usb. Lightling lasted about the same length of time that the 30-pin dock connector did, they were due for a change. I still say the USBC cable ecosystem is a mess. They never adopted clear labeling or color coding of what a given cable's capabilities are. 480/5/10/20/40 Mbps, 4/8k dp, 30/60/100/240W power. And the more capable cables linked thunderbolt have very chunky connectors that are awkward sticking out from a phone by up to an inch. I just wish the USB-C cable people would actually use the standardized logos on their cables, but almost no one does.

From the way they framed the USB 3 announcement for the iPhone 15 Pro, it sounds like the iPhone 15 is stuck with USB 2 because it runs the older A16 SoC. Since that design was done years ago, they couldn’t just sneak in a new USB controller in response to the EU regulations. edit: yes Linus acknowledged this later in the script. And per the WAN show that was edited into the script in script review by him, so that explains the delayed/inconsistent acknowledgement of this idea :)

I thought it was ridiculous when Apple highlighted the usb 3.0 controller on the chip (which is a kind of awesome chip in terms of the gpu). But, now thinking about it, there likely wasn’t a 3.0 controller on the chip from the pro model last year that is going in the base iphone 15. I wonder if they will bump the base to 3.0 and the pro to thunderbolt next to around.

If they keep the same trend of the non-pro models getting last year's pro chip, then the iPhone 16/Plus should get get A17 Pro with the USB 3 controller. Hopefully they bump the pro models to Thunderbolt at that point.

Just wait on USB5 or USB4.0x2.1+UltraGigaSpeed_40gbps lameusbforumnamingscheme, then maybe Apple will force the base model Iphone 16 for USB-C support superspeed, and hoping a desktop mode features on ios when plugin to monitor or a dock.

It's also kind of stupid how the latest iPhone won't support the same speed as your latest MacBook but limit transfer speed instead. The USB2 in the iPhone 15 is completely embarrassing in comparison to any other smartphone with USB-C. But the point that even the iPhone 15 Pro Max will limit transfer to or from your MacBook doesn't make any sense. I think the regular iPhone should have gotten USB3 and the Pro models should have gotten USB4.
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor 9 ай бұрын
@@TheJackiMonster USB 3 can be 5, 10 or 20 gbps and USB 4 is 40 or 80 gbps. So there's lots of room for them to move. Honestly 80gbps is probably pushing it, and not really worth worrying about too much. There is an issue with the cables themselves. They get pricey if you want the highest power + highest data + length from USB 3/4 and they get thicker. A three meter cable is great if you're in bed and want to be charged, but you wouldn't want it for transferring data at your desk obviously. I think they'll weaponise it though and use it to push adoption of the next gen Mac laptops and desktops/M3 chips along with iPads and iPhones of course. What makes practical sense on your phone to get all your video/photos off after a holiday so you can do the modern equivalent of making your family look at a photo album is another matter. Anyone used to Lightning is going to be blown away by the Pro Max though. Same with charging speed potential.

And this is why I wanted the EU to revise their law to require a complete implementation of USB-C, with USB 3 and Alt modes enabled, and also force mobile gadgets with internal storage to adhere to the MTP protocol for file transfers to internal storage. Windows users still need iTunes to interface with Apple hardware, which is cumbersome and non-portable, and transfer speeds from the PC are still soo early 2000s. I don't care how much you wanna sell your cloud solutions and sell your users' data, Not to mention no support for output to external displays using the standard adapters. It's neat for iPhone users to be able to charge with any charger and cable, but that's about it. Totally half-assed. This is a sin committed by various Android smartphone makers, too. USB 2 only on a USB-C gadget needs to die in a fire.

All and all Apple seems to be focusing on innovating in the chipset department. Sure other brands have features that Apple adds later but when it comes to the performance of their chipsets and the integration between hardware and software the competition isn’t able to compete. The iPhone 15 Pro is very compelling. I have the iPhone 12 Pro and have been wanting a phone with a larger screen and larger battery. I’ve also been wanting telephoto zoom and have been wanting USB C to be added for the past year. The pro max seems to check all the boxes… but I think I’m going to wait and see what some hands on reviews say. Very good review. I agree with all of your takeaways from the event and am excited to see what more performance Apple is able to squeeze out of their chips! The A17 Pro chip seems like a mini M1 chipset. Basically a computer processor in your pocket! If Apple can nail down the thermals we may see an actual M1 chip in an iPhone lol. Or maybe they will call it the Mi lol. Apple is often first in a lot of ways with their products. The power of their chipsets is another huge step that should push the entire mobile industry forward. Within the next 3-6 years I bet the entire industry will see a HUGE leap in performance that hasn’t been seen in quite sometime.

@@VegasHyruler I've had countless lightning cables die on me over the years, and had to keep buying more, so that's one thing. The other, no they wouldn't have made the same money selling USB-C, apple owns the lightning patent, so when anyone makes a lightning cable, they need to pay royalties to apple. With USB-C, Apple doesn't own it, and they only get money from selling their own USB-C cables, not literally all the USB-C cables like they did with lightning.
