A detailed video on how to replaced the lithium ion (li-ion) battery on your Apple iPhone 4s. Unlike many battery replacement videos demonstrated on KZfaq nobody has clearly explained each step with the level of precision that I have which I FEEL is important for anyone tackling a repair on ANY Apple product. One mistake could cost you your phone so it isn't worth risking you breaking your phone on an otherwise easy and straightforward repair. The battery replacement kit was sourced from www.ifixit.com and they are a very REPUTABLE Apple repair parts dealer. The repair procedure shown in this video likely applies to the Apple iPhone 4 as well.
Batteries in your Apple iDevices should typically need replacing after approximately 700 complete charge cycles for best life and performance.

Thanks I've watched 6 videos thus far in preparation of changing my battery; you're the first one to specifically say don't wedge on the inside where the circuits are, only on the outer side. The explanation of the grounding spring was a great help too.

I am 61 years old and my hands may not be that steady. But following the precise explanations and watching the video a few times I managed to do it and the phone booted up right away. Made me so happy and proud. I think your video has just the right amount of warning about the pitfalls and the same time an encouraging attitude which made me embark on the project. Screw Apple for the penta lobe screws and for their attitude in general.

yeah Apple is weird in some of things (crap) that they try to pull off. I get that they're trying to control the entire "Apple experience" but making things hard to service blows my mind. Just think... an iPhone 4 - iPhone 5S are EASY to service but anything beyond that gets progressively more and more difficult. I like Apple products a lot but their desire for complete control over things drives me crazy. In any case I'm glad you liked my vid and you were able to resolve your battery issues. Thanks for watching.

+Dimitris Kag yeah the devil is almost always in the details. I would agree that most of the vids on youtube about battery replacement are far too simpleton and that can lead to bad repairs where the viewer ruins their devices because the video tutorial was poorly done. I don't work that way and I'm almost over the top anal about a lot of things. If you're going to teach someone teach them the proper way.

Wow, great video; it's amazing that it takes a power user to correct an iFixit video regarding logic board screw lengths, delicate 4 point micro solder warning, rubbing alcohol to clean upper battery connecting screw, grounding spring/strap, rear antenna cleaning, realignment and the "liberation kit." Thank you!

yeah the problem with many videos today is that people have a very short attention span and therefore content creators have to pare things down to keep the playtimes short. The issue that arises from that approach is loss of details and for folks that aren't handy or tech savvy that this can result in making fatal mistakes. I'd personally prefer to NOT ruin my $1000 phone and have someone teach me the PROPER way on how to repair it so I don't screw things up in the process.

Excellent & thorough video. Also consider: --> The parts are TINY. I used a magnifying headband. --> If you don't have excellent fine motor control, patience and experience with precision work don't try this. --> if the phone doesn't connect then disable "auto time set", change something, then restore "auto time set". No, it doesn't make any sense but it does fix the problem.

Thank you for the extra comments. I had a lot more trouble getting the back off on my old phone that in the videos like your and hard to re seat. I cleaned all the accumulated dirt etc off which I assume was the problem but got it to move by being careful. I did have trouble with the flat wire from the battery to the connector. I was afraid to bend it to get it to fit so it would not sticking up., perhaps mine was a little too long.anyway I attached the connector first then was able to squeeze the cable beside the battery. It all worked fine in the end. I was using a kit from AX Micro soln inc. I see why the phone is NOT water resistant in any way. The 7 is clearly quite different. Resealing when you replace the battery will be quite a challenge. I had to take apart a waterproof camera so I know! Thanks again. Warren

Yea that was my problem too with bending the flat cable to the connector. I looked at the old battery and got more courage when I saw it bended. Tried to do the same. I also used a minuscule plier which I had at home. Those two screws are really small. :)

I'm glad that the battery replacement worked out for both of you. Yes the battery cable is actually more durable than it looks. Small bends in it won't harm it all. Yes the screws are pesky and I replaced my pentalobe screws with normal phillps screws that came with my iFixit kit.

+flbyrne39 glad you liked my vid! Chances are if the phone can't find the SIM card then your grounding strip spring isn't making good contact with the back of the iPhone. Q? After installing new battery, should you charge the battery immediately the rest of the way to 100%... or should you let the battery discharge completely first, and THEN charge it completely for the first time. Or does it matter? Thanks

This was awesome. Ordered a replacement battery and should get it in a few days. having to charge my phone 2-3 times a day is a headache. How long will a new battery typically last with moderate/heavy use throughout the day?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 9 жыл бұрын
yeah when your battery ages the internal resistance inside increases and thus it doesn't hold a charge well and it gets quite warm/hot when you're using it. The new battery will operate MUCH better. How long it will last? It depends really as your idea of moderate/heavy could be extreme or light for others. Just keep in mind that the iPhone battery will work perfectly for at least 500 full charge cycles and then after that roughly 80% performance of new can be expected for up to 700 charge cycles. A charge cycle is defined as a complete discharge and recharge. Say if you deplete your battery to 50% and then charge it back to 100% then that is considered a "half cycle". I've found from personal experience that a typical iPhone user can expect great battery performance for about 2 years and then afterwards the performance begins to decline. Batteries are so cheap and easy to replace in the 4s that fortunately if you do kill you battery in a short period of time that you can simply buy a new one and do it all over again :)

unfortunately you NEED that grounding clip. Hunt high and low if you must to locate it. If memory serves me correctly without the clip grounding out the back of the iPhone your wifi and your cellular service will fail to work properly or will work very inconsistently. nope just back your data up first before you ever work on your phone in case things go south on you. Replacing the battery in normal circumstances will NEVER result in data loss. Data loss only occurs if you mess up the phone itself and that is likely because something got damaged in the process.

None of these battery vids show how VERY fragile the battery connector on the mother board is and how easy it is to break it off the mother board accidentally, basically destroying the phone unless you're prepared for a big repair charge. If you replace your battery, do throw away the crappy plactic "spooger" prybar supplied and use something thin enough to get between the thin metal connector cover and the plastic connector beneath thats soldered onto the motherboard; like a stiff guitar pick.

I would definitely agree with your statement that the battery connectors are extremely fragile but I do emphasize in my vid to very carefully pry it away from the board and not be forceful. I guess when people take things apart they should exercise caution and understand that tiny parts are exceptionally delicate. Not sure what else to say other than to just proceed with caution.

Be warned, the screws fixing the battery plug are extremely small and very easy to loose! A magnetic screwdriver is almost essential for locating the screws in the appropriate holes. I found it very difficult to slide back the iphone back panel so as to disengage the fixing lugs. My solution was to stick a piece of duct tape to the back and pull very hard on it.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 4 жыл бұрын
yes the screws are extremely fine and your suggestion of using a magnetic screwdriver is a good one. I didn't even think about that as I am blessed with some fairly steady hands. I can absolutely see someone that twitches slightly and losing a screw. Thanks for the recommendation to our audience.

you'll have to either take it to an Apple service facility or get someone that is creative in how they can remove the screw. Sometimes if a screw head strips one can cut a microscopic groove into the screw head and use a flat bladed screwdriver to break the thread locking compound off the screws.

depends what you're doing with the phone and what version of iOS you're using. If you're using iOS 8 or newer then your phone absolutely will start getting warm no matter what you're doing b/c the iOS is taxing the system's memory and CPU. I run iOS7 still on my iPhone and it runs like it's new still and it's dead cold.

After i replace battery,my phone keep rebooting in apple logo?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 жыл бұрын
did you try doing a hard reset on it by simultaneously holding the power and home button? Is the new battery fully charged? A faulty battery can cause constant rebooting b/c of low voltage or because I can carry the electrical load that the phone demands of the battery. Seen it on faulty batteries.

Not that I am aware of. Try charging the phone up for a few hours and then see what happens. Sometimes when a battery is deeply discharged that it does some weird stuff to the logic board like constant reboots when it should be displaying low battery. Sometimes when a battery isn't quite fully discharged that it can make a phone power up and down too.

have you done a hard reboot on your phone? Hold the home button and power button for at least 30 seconds and then power it up. That should resolve everything.

+piercedasian ye it's an industry supplying toolkits for replacing a battery lol, how stupid are consumers. I am positive they made them this way purposly knowing they would sell more to the worshippers.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 8 жыл бұрын
its totally a conspiracy. Unfortunately most consumers are stuck with no other option but to suck it up and pay the price. Myself included. I don't like it but do I have any other real option. Thankfully I only do battery replacements every 3 years and usually by the 4 year mark I have a new phone anyways.

A phone so smart, it needed hundreds of YOutube instruction videos about it. I miss my MOTOROLA RAZOR, if it was not stolen, I'd still use it over these smart phones that have zero common sense and so disposable. my battery may have died, but how would i know if it was just the battery? The last time it was the charger... now it must be the battery.

The unfortunate thing with the latest tech and the quest to cram more and more tech into a sleek form factorthat replacing something simple like a battery, requires someone to almost have an engineering degree. I vividly remember the Razr and how neat that phone was.

@@piercedasian my smart phones are just presents.... I wouldn't buy them myself... my iphone 4 was so useless... cant even download apps... and it is always trying to suggest stuff or update things, that are just dumb or intrusive... But at least the iphone 4 had a nice design. the other iphones were just flat and huge. the Razor was just perfect and so are some of the Nocia phones.
