The MagSafe battery pack isn’t meant to be a power bank. But more as a battery extended. It’s meant to be stuck onto you’re phone when it’s full of charge. Or atleast 90 percent. If you have the feature of “no charge past 90” then your phone will drain from 100-89 then it will charge between 89-91 for the whole entire time. Maybe a little less depending on usage. Typically I recommend not using phone during this time.(charging the 2 percent) But like the smart battery case from previous phones, it’s meant to be on your phone from the get go when it’s fully charged or nearly fully charged.

This review missed the most important thing, _how much extra juice does it provide._ It doesn’t matter if it takes twice as long to charge if it lasts twice as much. Battery packs aren’t about how fast they charge but how much extra running time they get you, without a discharge test this thing is pointless…

There were a few critical errors in this vid (capacity, misleading charging rate) and possibly not enough research. Also, wouldn’t the purpose of this gadget be to keep the phone alive longer? (And not to charge “really really fast.”)

Exactly. Spot on with some of the review... but mAh is really misleading. You should be using Watt hours... which takes into consideration voltage and current. From the Verge: "The MagSafe Battery only has a 1,460mAh battery, but that number isn’t comparable to other batteries because it can push through more volts (7.62V). So the MagSafe Battery’s rated 11.13Wh (Watt-hours) is the number that actually matters. Meanwhile, Anker makes a 5,000mAh battery with wireless charging and magnets for under $50. It’s rated at 18.5Wh, so the differences are smaller than they first appear." Tha Anker pack still has a higher capacity, but not 3x higher.

@@TheNewGreenIsBlue Not only that but battery packs like the Anker put the iPhone into A/C mode instead of keeping it in battery mode, thus cranking up the antennas, background activity, etc, negating a lot of the gains that come from the battery pack. @@TheNewGreenIsBlue To complicate it further, manufacturers sometimes state "equivalent" charge rating for batteries. One example is Dell with their external battery for laptops. It's a six cell pack and they state capacity in terms of charge as if the cells are in parallel (which makes no sense for a laptop pack). So, you need to use single cell voltage to get the energy rating, not pack voltage. Crazy. You should always specify energy rating (which they didn't, at all; I had to find a high resolution photo and read the compliance label). Not only you don't have to guess voltage (nominal voltages do differ and voltage drops as a cell discharges), it's also agnostic to topology. And then they top it off by labelling it 18000 mAh... instead of 18 Ah. The joys of marketing.

The Apple has a few benefits that I appreciate more. 1. It keeps the temps down to protect your phones battery compared to others like the Ankers that get lots of complaints about heating up. 2. The update that gives them 7.5W charging helps a lot with speeds but isn’t the fastest. 3. It’s a MagSafe charger at 15W when plugged in so it’s a two in one product. 4. The iPhone can charge the battery pack when the phone is directly plugged into a charger. 5. The battery pack is an extender not a charger, which is what I actually want. If you want a fast charger just carry a battery bank for faster speeds and less heat.

A few things, capacity stated is wrong, it uses a much higher voltage than normal packs. This makes watts higher than it appears. This higher voltage also probably means less heat. Not mentioned, no reverse wireless charging from the other products. Probably not crazy useful, but it is a thing. Lastly, no speed increase should be expected from more than 20W, that’s just the limitations of 15w mag safe. Also, the other packs power aren’t software managed. Using the Apple pack every day is easy, and you don’t have to worry about such things.

The other chargers' battery cells are actually rated 5000mah @3.7v and Apples MagSafe Battery is rated 1460mah @7.62v, therefore when accounting for a 5w output for both batteries it would be 5000*3.7/5=3700mah (Anker) and 1460*7.62/5=2,225.04mah (Apple) So its actually 3/5 the capacity and not 1/3.

@jacobh674 2 жыл бұрын
Can you explain the math more?
@JRitchProductions
@JRitchProductions 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobh674 Basically the battery cell voltage plays a part in determining the capacity because mAh to mAh isn’t an apples to apples comparison, if the battery cell voltages are different. The mAh is a relative indicator in this case and can’t be compared if factoring in different voltages. Side note: if you multiply the mAh by the voltage you get the watt hours. You can determine that yourself. I used a 5 watt output in the above comparison as it’s the standard Apple charging output. But to compare the Apple battery pack to the Anker battery pack @3.7v it’d be 1460*7.62/3.7=3,006.81mAh. So now that it’s an apples to apples comparison, yes the 3,006.81mAh isn’t close to the advertised 5000mAh of the Anker pack, but it isn’t as drastic as a difference as it might seem at first glance.

Gotta agree with others here. Love your stuff but this one was bad. The purpose of this pack is NOT "charge really fast". It's "make your phone last longer". It does. Also, it charges faster when plugged in, it reverse charges when charging the phone which is useful with one cable and prioritizing charging the phone itself, and the capacity is meaningless since the voltage is higher so Wh would have been much more useful. The fact that is stays on the phone better than the Anker one (which I currently have and so far kinda liked) is also a huge deal for this product imo. Is it a little expensive? For sure, but is it also pretty much just better than the competition for most usecases? Yes and isn't that the apple story? ;)

I’m thinking it’ll be useful in a couple years when the battery health is low or if you just have a long day. It’s usefulness is pretty much just “keep it from dying” more than anything it seems. I have both the Anker MagGo 622 and the Apple MagSafe battery pack. The Anker is heavier, bigger, and gets uncomfortably hot while in your pocket charging your phone. The Anker’s edge is also straighter so it also digs into your hand while holding it with the phone. It also doesn’t have the software integration, so the phone will still download updates while charging with the Anker, making the device even hotter. These type of wireless battery packs are mainly meant to be used as battery extenders, not chargers. It’s meant to be left on your device for extended periods of time to act as a second battery until you’re able to recharge. Since it’s attached to your device for extended periods of time, it needs to be comfortable to use, so it needs to be cool to the touch, light weight, and have rounded edges so it’s comfortable to hold. Regarding the kickstand on the Anker MagGo 622, it is ok but it’s too wobbly and not very comfortable to use when you try to tap the phone while it is attached to the Anker with the kickstand deployed. After finish watching a video in landscape with the phone on the kickstand, I have to awkwardly take the phone off the kickstand without collapsing it, rotate back to portrait, find the next video to watch, then carefully put it back on the kickstand. If you really want to use a kickstand then you’re better off just using a MagSafe ring holder, which is a much more stable kickstand so it’s a lot less frustrating to use because it’s easier to pick it up to change the video and set it back down. Having used both, I prefer the Apple MagSafe battery because it’s lighter and smaller and doesn’t get hot and the edge is more rounded so it’s much more comfortable to use, not to mention that it charges much faster than the Anker when plugged in, which is when it is used as a charger instead of a battery extender. That means the Apple MagSafe performs better than the Anker as both a battery extender as well as a battery charger so the higher price is justified.

Hi! Thanks for this nice comment, i was thinking about buying the anker 622 but now you convinced me to buy the apple battery pack! @mrwombat24
@mrwombat24 2 жыл бұрын
@@maze3490 It's true that the charging speed of the Apple MagSafe battery pack will adjust based on how you're using your phone. The charging speed may get really slow if you're doing something really intensive while charging, like playing an intensive video game. I believe it's slowing down the charge to make sure that it doesn't add additional heat to the phone, otherwise it will degrade the phone's battery a lot quicker. This is a feature that I actually really appreciate. In the past, I have held my phone and played video games while it's plugged into the wall and the phone got really hot! It can be uncomfortable, but what's worse is that my eyes got really red whenever I do this. I read somewhere that mentioned about the big current draws on the phone not being very healthy for you if you're holding it while it's drawing a lot of current. That means it's a really great feature that the Apple MagSafe battery pack is trying to limit the load and current draw on the phone while you're using it, possibly lowering the risk of it harming you and making sure that it doesn't get too hot so it's still comfortable to hold. For the case of playing games while charging, even if you use the Anker battery pack that can charge slightly faster and has more capacity than the Apple, you still won't be able to keep up with the draw on the battery and you would be sacrificing your gaming experience because it would get way too hot to comfortably hold. If you must play games while charging for extended periods of time, that means you will be sitting at one spot and don't need to put the phone in your pocket or you don't need to hold your phone while playing because you're using some wireless controller. In that case, you wouldn't care as much if the phone got too hot to comfortably hold, although it may still lower the battery health. For this case, you would be much better off plugging the phone into a large capacity power bank while playing instead of using the Apple or Anker wireless battery packs. For my general use case, I usually watch a lot of KZfaq videos for hours at a time at double speed. I do notice that when I have the Apple MagSafe batter pack on while watching KZfaq, my phone's battery life does still decrease, but it decreases at a much slower rate. But that doesn't matter to me. I don't care if it's decreasing even if I have the Apple MagSafe batter pack on. What really matters is that when my phone runs out of battery, the batter pack will also be out of battery, which means that I've efficiently used up all the battery without having some battery life left in the battery pack that is now useless because I can't use my phone unless I wait for it to charge. When I watch KZfaq, I notice that my phone's battery decreases at a slightly slower rate than my battery pack's battery life. That means that on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, as long as I slap the Apple battery pack on my phone before my phone gets below 50% battery life then I'm guaranteed to be able to use up my battery pack's battery long before my phone runs out of battery if I'm just watching KZfaq videos. For these types of battery extenders, charging speed is not really as important as the other attributes, namely comfort and charging efficiency. The Apple MagSafe battery pack produces less heat and the numbers show that it charges more efficiently than the Anker. That means a lot of the extra weight and battery capacity of the Anker that you have to carry around while it's charging your phone is wasted in the form of heat. At the same time, it damages the health of your battery a lot quicker. Sure, you can replace your phone's battery in a few years, but the cost of the battery replacement is almost as much as the Apple MagSafe battery pack itself. But what's more harmful than the cost of the battery replacement is the fact that you'll be having a degraded experience with your phone for a few years due to the poor battery health before you actually replace your battery. I was fooled into buying the Anker after looking at a lot of KZfaq tech videos with one dimensional viewpoints stating that the Anker charges faster therefore it's better. After purchasing the Anker and finding out that it gets pretty hot while charging, I thought deeply about what makes a good battery extender, purchased the Apple one, and came to the conclusion that the Apple battery pack is the best and worth the higher price. I will be keeping my Apple MagSafe battery pack and will be returning the Anker MagGo 622.

I like how the Mophie looks and the performance. but... the mini is the iPhone that will most likely need help. And it looks like the mini wasn't a consideration when they designed the thing. It's too big. On the other hand, Apple's pack looks like it was made for the mini. Yes, I don't like big phones. I think the mini is just briliant. Which leaves me glad that I don't actually need a bank. I think you misunderstood Apple. First of all, Apple says that the bank will supply up to 5 W on the go (and up to 15 W, they say, when plugged in). Go ahead, read it, it's there*. Second, the way I read it, they are saying that if you charge both a phone and a pack at the same time, you can benefit from a more powerful charger. Which would make sense if you go by the specification. 15 W wireless charger wouldn't leave much for the bank itself. I don't see them claiming that the bank itself can charge at more than 20 W. And what is that 87 W charger? I can't find it on Apple's website. I see 30, 61 and 96 W. Is it USB-C? Unfortunately, Apple is tight on recommendations or compatibility (aside from the standard 20 W charger). And this is where you can run into compatibility issues (Apple is known for not always playing nice with others, but it should at least play nice with itself). My best bet would be the 30 W charger. It's the only one which lists compatibility with iPhones or iPads. It's also the only one which is listed on the iPhone accessories page. The more powerful versions aren't there. So, I find it surprising that you didn't try that one as it's the obvious choice - to me, at least. In the end, I'm baffled by the product (not hitting 15 W when plugged-in), but your video was unfortunately disappointing as well. To the point where I'm not entirely sure whether it was the product or you screwed something up. BTW, saying things like "charge 1100 mA" makes no sense. Ampere is a unit of current, not a unit of charge (and it would be even better to talk in terms of energy rather than charge, but that seems to be a stretch too far). You do understand the difference between volume and flow rate, I hope. Coulomb (or ampere-hour) tells you how much charge there is and ampere tells you the rate of gain or loss of said charge. That's fifth grade stuff. Why do I get the feeling that most of "tech youtubers" skipped school (or slept through it) and lack any decent technical education? I mean, you people do this for a living and you can't even be bothered to learn a few relevant units? Not to mention mastering the scaling. My teachers would have shot me had I said some nonsense like 5000 mAh. It's 5 Ah. You did that on a test or homework and it's instant fail. The facility was invented exactly so that we don't have to bother with huge or tiny numbers. We can bring a unit up or down a scale many orders of magnitude to fit the application. * "When charging on the go, your MagSafe Battery Pack can charge your iPhone with up to 5W of power. If connected to a 20W or higher power source, it can charge with up to 15W of power." You just have to follow the "for more information" link... to get more information. :-) Yeah, they should have said so on the tin, so to speak. That's what you get with the "up to" claims. Once in a blue moon, if you stand on one leg and touch your nose with an index finger. :D I get it, charging rates are not constant, it's would actually be incorrect to claim a flat rate (usually), but all sorts of things can hide under "up to."

What good is a slow minimally charged iPhone with a half charged wireless battery pack when it just dies; as opposed to an iPhone that charged quickly whilst the battery pack fully charged itself later after your main device is complete.

@@SilverScarletSpider assuming you’re in a situation with a dead phone and dead battery pack and only have a few minute to charge, why would anyone plug the charger into the battery pack? Having the battery pack attached to the phone doesn’t disable the phones lighting port. Plus wireless charging isn’t as efficient. Only real reason you’d connect a cable to the battery pack is when you’re going to bed, so you charge both at the same time.

The reason the 45w and 87w chargers didn't charge as fast is because it may not have as many amps flowing through. Just because it has a higher wattage doesn't necessarily mean it'll charge faster.

So perhaps they have updated the wording on the package but the way I read it the quicker charge on the Apple charger is if you plug a lightning cable into the battery then into the phone and not a quicker charge if you use a higher watt charger to charge the battery.

I'm going to say it depends on your use case. I have tried both the Anchor and the Apple Magsafe "chargers". I have not tried the Mophie so have no experience with it. Despite my owning several other Anchor products I did not like their Magsafe charger at all. It was too bulky when attached to my 12 Pro Max and the magnet didn't really work that well in my opinion. The Apple product fits much better and doesn't feel like it's in the way if I want to use my phone while it's attached which to be honest is the only way I use it. Neither one is a particularly fast charger, I guess. But I don't really care because I've never, not even once, tried to use it to charge my phone. I only ever use it to extend the life of my phone when the built-in battery is getting dangerously low and for that it does a pretty good job.

Maybe Apple’s external battery isn’t suppose to be used like any other battery. Maybe it’s supposed to be used as the phone’s battery before the phone’s battery is used. I’m assuming Apple expects us to use it like their old iPhone battery case. There no off/on button. It’s supposed to be used before the phone uses it’s own battery. That would explain the low charging.

gah how can you miss so many important details about the Magsafe Battery Pack. The last thing Apple intended it to be was a super fast charger. It's meant to live on your phone for extended periods of time giving you many more hours of screen on time while also preserving your battery health. There's a reason it only charges at 15W when it's plugged in. If it charged at 15W all day while connected to your iphone, it would generate so much heat and increase the degradation of the iPhone's battery. Lastly, the math on battery capacities is complicated and the capacities are actually very similar between the Anker 5K and Magsafe Battery.

Don’t buy third party products for apple guys, just spend the money. You already spent shit load of money on their phone no need being cheap and buying garbage products. The other ones magnets aren’t as strong and they are bulkier. The point of this thing is to be slim and not feel like you have a battery pack back there the others fail at that. Also idgf about charging my phone 2 times over I just want it to make it through a whole day in constant use.

It's not supposed to charge your device fast. It's designed for you to slap it on when you are NOT using it, while you slap it off when you are using the phone. So next time you use the phone, the battery pops off the phone. Rinse and repeat. You'll have all day battery life without having to carry a heavy phone with you while you are USING it. I don't know why no one seems to know how to use the battery pack the right way. Finally, the Apple Battery pack is smaller, 15% thinner and 20% lighter than the lightest competitor Mophie Mini. The whole point of the battery pack is to be as light as possible and make the phone last all day so you can charge it at night when you go to sleep and wake up with a fully.charged phone. That's the use case people.

Your videos are funny and most of the times technical details are covered. On the other hand here you miss some important information. The initial idea of the Apple Battery pack is to keep the battery at a certain level and that in a secure way. Automatically the Apple Battery pack loads up to 90% and holds the iPhone battery at this level. In the settings of the iPhone you can change that to 100% charging. I used the Anker Battery pack, too. For me Apple solution feels better in the hand (using original silicon case) and the way it works together in the ecosystem is way ahead to the Anker version.

Hi I’ve been watching your vids for the years. Been busy with TikTok for a bit and purposely searched for you to find out about a power bank option. I’m visiting another country and my phones battery is only 82% capacity now so I’m interested what ordinary power banks you recommend. Couldn’t find the video I wanted yet. I generally use an iPhone so something that charges fast hopefully wirelessly and has a few charges in it would be great if you could recommend one. I’m interested in the Samsung 25w wireless model but I think there must be something newer on the market.

It should be noted that the MagSafe Battery Pack is not a battery bank. It is not meant to charge your phone fast. It is supposed to be a battery extender hence why the charging is slow. The slow charging also is better for the battery health though its still worse than charging via Wire since Wireless Charging is very inefficient. Anyways, the MagSage Battery Pack should be compared to the old Apple Battery Cases, not to battery banks since that is what it is trying to replicate the functionality of.

I’m so sorry but this is the worst review of the battery case I have seen. You completely missed the point of the product! Why do a ton of reviewers care about charging speeds so much? I charge my phone at night anyway so even if it takes 6h to charge - I don’t care. People slap this battery on the back whenever the phone gets low, put it back in their pocket and forget about it. That’s it. Oh and as a lot of people mentioned already: You didn’t even check the voltage. Of course it charges slowly, charging fast only hurts the battery and there is NO NEED for it to be faster than a wall plug. Really disappointed because you’re always claiming that a lot of time goes into researching and testing a product…

I'm fairly certain the 15W wireless charging is only when it's plugged in, not when used on its own. As a battery pack, I thought I read somewhere that it only charged at 5W unless it's plugged in with a 20W adapter? Though head also is a big issue, and since it's a wireless charger that has to be wary of heat of both its own battery as well as the phone's, it's not going to be able to charge too well even when plugged in. I only use mine to keep the phone topped at 90%, doesn't generate a lot of heat that way and it lasts decently well.
