That tends to happen a lot with Apple. They're not usually the first but they start the revolution by making things mainstream. The computer mouse and graphical user interface already existed when Apple released their Macintosh in the early 80's. MP3 players were already on the market when Apple released the iPod. Smartphones where already out when iPhone was introduced. There were outrage when Apple took floppy drives, then disc drives, then headphone jacks from their products. Yet, the industry follow right along in their foot steps. Apple's strength is their ability to package tech that are already out there in a form that mainstream will/can accept. They made wearing white earbuds with cords "cool" to do. They did it again with wireless earbuds that look like tampons.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment! Apple indeed has a track record of making things cool and mainstream. Obviously some products more so than others but it’ll be very interesting to see if they can do it again with mixed reality headsets and spatial content 🤔

Well I’m definitely curious to see how it goes from the standpoint of being a spatial camera that has to be worn on your face. Many have said that it would probably be awkward, like when people are constantly recording content vs. being present in the moment. So I’d hope that they eventually release a standalone version of the camera, too.

Definitely! Somehow filming with a headset on ur face feels more detached than having a phone or camera in front of you. I second the motion for a standalone camera! 👏🏼 The question is will it be an iPhone 16 pro with a stereoscopic camera setup, an iPad or a partnership with Sony or Canon to have dedicated cameras? Spatial content making it into mainstream I think hinges on having an ecosystem of hardware and software incl. standalone pro cameras and spatial cameras on our phones. The next few months will be very interesting to see if a standalone camera launches in anticipation of AVP launch 🥽

One thought that I probably could have been more clear on in this video is that my belief is that the killer app for AVP will again be content creation and distribution, not developers creating millions of apps (which of course will be useful but not the reason why AVP goes mainstream). Just like iPhone I think AVP needs “native” content to keep people coming back.

I think they will make the pictures to be taken with spacial specs with the iphone which can be connected to vision pro.

Given the current iPhone camera layout, would you think it’s possible for the iPhones to capture 3D photos? If so, starting with which model? I would guess any Pro model with TrueDepth on the rear, which hopefully would then include recent generations of iPad Pro models. If not, do you think the upcoming 15 or 16 model will support it? Lastly, for viewing outside of the headset, I expect that the parallax effect, used previously for wallpapers, will enable a 2D viewing experience with a slight gimmick to make it fun for users to share and want to capture with their mobile devices. What do you think, Ryan?

Great questions Zean! My thoughts: 1) To capture true stereoscopic content, 2 lenses of the same focal length paired with the exact same camera sensor are needed. Ideally they are also aligned along the same horizontal axis. iPhone has multiple cameras but they don’t form a stereo pair. 2) while LiDAR (depth sensor) offers a depth map of a scene, it doesn’t offer the same depth perception that one gets from binocular vision. Apple could be very innovative and use one lens for the left eye and render the right stereo pair from LiDAR depth data and AI models but that’s a lot harder imo than just using a stereo camera. 3) if I were in Apple shoes, I would add a stereo camera pair on the next iPad Pro. While it is awkward to use as a regular camera it has the perfect size for a stereo camera pair in which the lenses are 65mm apart. iPhone could also do it but it would jeopardize the ergonomics when holding it in vertical mode. 4) you can get away with having the lenses at a smaller than 65mm distance. The only issue is that the 3D effect won’t be as pronounced or realistic as natural human vision. The average distance between adult eyes is ~65mm so hence that target number. Viewing: 5) this is where a headset will be a must. On a 2D panel a spatial photo or video is nothing more than a novelty and will likely offer a lesser experience than a 2D piece of content. To enjoy the immersion and emotional impact of spatial content, spatial viewing is required. 6) I’m a strong proponent of native viewing. Phones are best for vertical short form content. TVs are best for long form horizontal content. Headsets are best for spatial content. Apple has a strong ecosystem of hardware and software to make each device shine at its strengths. 7) I can imagine iPhone simulating the depth effect with parallax like you mention but this would likely be used for previewing and reviewing captured content, not necessarily enjoying spatial content. It’s really early in the spatial content journey to have strong opinions so in this case I subscribe to strong opinions loosely held. What do you think? Also thank you for the thoughtful comment 🙏🏼

i'm really excited for it😍 & i'll buy one definitely but i'll wait for the second gen mainly because of that poor 2 hours battery life... and i also would like to have M3 or M4 with the ray tracing capabilities, i think it will improve the Visual experience. ❤‍🔥

The second gen will definitely be better and likely also cheaper. I'm hoping Apple actually included a modified M2 that already includes support for hardware raytracing. That would be next level 😲

Now the iPhone 13 Pro is technically their first 3D camera since the Vision Pro isn’t out yet.

I believe the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are the only ones that can record Spatial Video. Based on rumors, the Spatial Video from iPhone will be pretty limited so I do think the best content will come from Apple Vision Pro recordings and dedicated (pro) 3D camera rigs.

Forget 360, I want GoPro to have a killer 270 degree Camera.
@ryankopinsky

Hmm interesting! 360 is difficult because everything is in the scene. With 180 or perhaps 270 there is at least some room for the crew and set while still being very immersive for the viewer 🥽

I completely forgot about the 3DS! I didn’t own one but I think it also had a 3D screen. There was lots of 3D tech when the first Avatar movie came out. My guess is there will be a second wave of 3D tech but this time the biggest tech company will be pushing for it 👀

No doubt. Price and infancy of the Vision ecosystem will make it so. But if AVP follows in the same tracks as other successful Apple products, in 5-7 years it should be mainstream and could potentially reinvent the camera as we know it 📸
