The Apple thunderbolt display. this is the best used apple product going in to 2024 and the best budget apple product overall.
There is no compatibility problems with the newest M1 Mac's unlike other apple products that grow obsolete and do not support the newest products and software.

Hey, thank you for your good explanation video! I am just wondering about tech. I have been using an iMac (a bit old) for the dual monitor with my Macbook. A few days ago, I got an Apple Thunderbolt monitor from a friend.... What I want to know is can I use the the Thunderbolt monitor as a third dual monitor? I have a Thunderbolt cable (white one). If I can, what should I buy? Thanks, Yoon

The older iMacs could only attach one extra monitor. I have the top spec 27" iMac from 2013 and it only supports one extra monitor. it can be done with a splitter though. but you will have to search for splitters to get info on that as its not something i use myself. if your iMac is newer than 2013 there might be a chance some of the higher tier macs support 2 external screens but it depends of the year and the Mac. Even in the newer M chip Macs You will need a Pro chip to support more than one external monitor. hope this answer helps. cheers the old guy

I've got a desk setup with a 5,2 Mac Pro, using two LED Cinema displays, a 27" as the main display, and a 24" as the secondary. It's essentially the same display, just with mini displayport as the interface, rather than Thunderbolt 2.. They are great for machines that cannot connect via Thunderbolt.

Great input. And When you upgrade to a Mac with Thunderbolt the mini display port is pretty easy to adapt. But as you say a Mac without Thunderbolt makes it hard to use a Thunderbolt display as its not easy to adapt.

@@OldGuyNewTech I do have a Thunderbolt Display as well, which works great with Thunderbolt equipped Macs. Since I do retro tech, it is really handy to have that FireWire 800 port available, and it is cool that it works.

I also own the older 2010, Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display and no special cable needed for my 2010, mac mini (with a mini display port) or for my 2014, "trash can" size Mac Pro (with a thunderbolt 2 port). But, if you are using Apple's new M-1/M-2/ or M-3 processor computer, you will need to use a special none Apple cable with mini display port on one end and with a USB "C" port on the other end (smile...smile).

I’ve used the these older Apple thunderbolt displays for work before we upgraded to LG ultrawides. For people considering them, the displays get really warm and it’s better to use them in a dim area, also some may have yellow color casts due to age. But if you find a decent one, it’ll be enough for all your work 🙏🏽 lastly, if you have a a few hundred more dollars, purchase the Asus ProArt QHD 27 75hz instead. I have one and it’s been great with my MacBook m1 and recently purchased M3 pro.

All your points are valid. The consistency of having an apple branded screen means something for many people including me. But people should know that there are alternatives if this screens downsides are dealbreakers for them. The possibility of a yellow cast and the head might be for some. Thanks for commenting.

@@OldGuyNewTech Absolutely, the apple displays connectivity is greatl, being able to control the brightness and volume from the keyboard and using the system setting to control the picture profile is sorely missed, as I now have to do that through the menu of the Asus Monitor. It's a small inconvenience, but it does affect the seamless experience that Apple products offer. Thanks for your feedback!

@@Wade_Adakai this is exactly why many go for the Studio display even though it is a bit expensive. And why the thunderbolt display is a good alternative for those people. Again thanks for your well-rounded replies. They add to the Video in a good way.

Got a 27 Thunderbolt for 100 USD, it’s in great shape and bright. Got my MBA M1 hooked up to it, makes a great small office. I wish there was a way to hook it up to my old Mac Pro 5,1. Nice monitor, I might get the 30 inch Cinema Display later this year. Those are also well made, much better quality than all the plastic junk out there. Cheers from Cali.

While, Apple, Inc. still supports the 27-inch Thunderbolt displays, I own their older 2010, 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display where everything is the same except that, on the back (mine has no Fire-wire 800 port, just three (3) USB "A" ports. Please note, if using my model on a M-1/M-2/ or M-3 processor computer, you also need a none Apple cable with mini display port on one end and a USB "C" port on the other end (smile...smile).

@@transitengineer yes this is the same display but with different connectors. It was not made for more than a year 2010-2011 and then the thunderbolt version was released. In this video I’m not including this display to avoid confusion. But it could be a good option depending on your Mac ports. If you own a thunderbolt Mac I would try to get the thunderbolt version for more easy adaptation. Essentially if you can get the thunderbolt version for 100-150$. But thanks for sharing and making awareness of the other version of this display. Cheers

Videos and images look great on the 27" Thunderbolt display, but fonts are simply blurry, even if you activate HiDPI with BetterDisplay it only gets slightly better. And because of the connection, you can't connect it to Displayport or HDMI to get it with a Display Link Dock on the M1. You would have to use the older Cinema Display, which costs $50-100 more. So think carefully about what you are using the display for. It's nice to look at for a price of around $200, but the Font is scaled very roughly.

Thanks for the input Sir. I use it for video and photo edits with no problems. Plenty Sharp for my needs. And the missing headache from great compatibility and the price leaves it with no other competitive options. But you might be right about fonts and therefore adding to the topic and doing so in a positive way👍🏽 cheers

@@kyrbies No I use two Thunderbolt Displays daisy chained on Sonoma on a M2 Pro Mac Mini. And I use the native HiDPI settings. But that doesn’t even effect fonts in programs, it only makes the GUI scale differently. If you use the HiDPI setting on a 1440 27 inch panel, you are still within the retina spec. It takes the gui and at 1440p (the display’s output) and scales the gui to 720p at twice the pixel density. The font issues are only a problem at 4k, because you need a 24 inch panel like the iMac to actually scale the gui. There are charts you can look at for the “retina scaling Goldilocks zone” for different sizes and resolutions.
