The entire purpose of Self Service Repair is to deter people from doing it. Apple launched the program so their lobbyists can say: "See? We gave people the opportunity to fix their own devices, and nobody used it. We don't need Right to Repair legislation." It's irrelevant that Apple made it cost-prohibitive, as inconvenient as possible, and linked it all to each individual device.

They just did this as a marketing gimmick, there's a reason self service is basically the exact same cost as doing it at the apple store. As long as they can monopolize the service, they can charge whatever they want for it.

Not to mention that it does two more things. By structuring self-service the way they did, including still needing to contact them to re-serialize the new parts, they effectively discourage self and third party repair; "it's just easier to go to the Apple Store". The second, main, thing is that they were able to lobby in all states saying that they do offer self-service and are definitely not being sketchy at all. The answer is to vote with your wallet and buy from other brands, but unfortunately a lot of people in the U.S. are too into Apple so they get away with their nonsense.

Exactly. Nothing changes unless they stop serializing replacement parts, and start selling OEM parts with no strings attached. And that’s beyond making their devices easier to repair in the first place…

It is a marketing gimmick but don't forget some of their vintage products they will not repair at the apple store for any price. I get it but wouldn't it be nice if you could get your vintage Apple lampshade iMac repaired? Some people want to fix things for nostalgia reasons. They could make that easier and it wouldn't be a threat to their profits. Though, I know that's not what the Apple repair program is currently about.

It amazes me that apple flaunts that so much despite the fact that they don't even attempt to keep laptops out of landfills. Between the fact that the oldest computers apple"s current os supports is 5 years old is crazy or the fact there are m1 macs with activation locks that can't be reused are already flooding recyclers. I have a 10 year old hp elitebook that I paid $50 for the garage that is easier to software update than a 5 year old imac. That's pathetic for a billion dollar company.

As an employee of the same major electronics retailer, when the self service program first launched and it was shown that the tools were literally the tools we use everyday i couldn't help but cackle knowing full well that some of these self-service repair people would inevitably get an HDO constantly throwing them blue screen errors but not having any clue how to troubleshoot them simply because the HDO was never meant to be in end-user hands. Atleast the end-user doesn't have to faf around with GSX though.

@SaraBearRawr0312 5 ай бұрын
@@isheamongus811 GSX is the site used to document, perform, and complete service orders for Apple Geniuses and Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) as-well as for parts/inventory ordering and management. If you ever have an apple device serviced by apple in-store or at an AASP and happen to see the screen where the technician is entering your information and the devices information then you are likely seeing GSX. GSX is integrated with two other programs called AST and ASU which are diagnostic and calibration suites used to test the device or calibrate the device following a repair which is what allows features like face-ID to work following a repair by Apple or an AASP as opposed to a mom-&-pop shop. HDO is the Heated Display Opener, the stupidly heavy thing that the phone goes into which heats up the edges of the screen and is then slowly pulled open by the screw-adjusted suction cup. The HDO trays which hold the phones aren't just generation specific, they're model specific (pro, plus, pro max, etc). Each HDO tray has an RF chip which tells the HDO unit itself what type of phone is being heated and heats the phone based off of a pre-programmed look-up table with the temperature being read by a thermo-couple. The issue is that the RF tag can easily be damaged which renders the HDO tray useless and the thermo-couple isnt very accurate which often causes the HDO unit to freak out and throw out an error. Even just a speck of dust on the pins/connector that connect the tray to the HDO itself or a small layer of dust on the RF reader might throw up an error which slows down or even prevents repairs occasionally.

Apple stopped sending us new parts on the regular. I tell customers we hold the phone for 2 weeks or go to the Apple store. They choose the Apple store. Now iPad users are a different story. We have to ship those off, and I inform them of the ~1 month turn time and paper work involved, and they insist instead of going to the Apple Store. About 30 minutes into starting GSX and getting them to sign forms, they ask to go to the Apple Store.

I work at an Apple authorized service retailer so I might be biased however this as basically the exact same process we go though, the same tools, same parts, same battery roller. The main differences are we also get access to the diagnostics portal directly and we pay upfront to own all the tools rather than renting and we have to go through hours of training before being certified to work on particular models. I do wish there was third party parts; now the reason I’ve heard on why Apple doesn’t want third party parts is that they don’t want the brand image of the iPhone to be hurt by a faulty battery or display that shatters instantly, however I never found a source to this rumor so take it with a grain of salt. However if they are worried about brand image than instead of blocking all parts maybe create a MFI like program for third party parts.
@PvtAnonymous

@@johnatkinson1111 nah, they just do what they are best at: retain control. Apple doesn't care about the image of the iPhone like they used to (otherwise they would finally fix the bugs in iOS 17 and Sonoma finally). Instead, they have another opportunity to cash in on people, especially those looking for perfectionism. This is why they created this whole perfectionist image around repairs too. I can safely say, I'll be faster and less destructive by using a thin metal card and a heat mat to get into the 12-15 models instead of this horrendous "display removal fixture" abomination that doesn't even work on shattered displays without their $1 a piece glue film. Same with the battery roller. In fact, securing batteries with just one of these 4 tabs will be enough. Apple famously said they are "losing money on every repair". Which is just another marketing ploy, when you look at individual component prices.

The slightly annoying thing about self service repair is that you can’t order the parts unless you have the serial so third party shops can do the repair but they can’t stock the parts and have to order the parts when a customer first comes in; a restriction authorized service providers don’t have as we can stock parts ahead of time(although it is a financial risk if no one brings in a particular model for repair the part will just sit already paid for). Now before repair shops go and try to become an authorized service provider they should remember that Apple can do surprise inspections of the repair workspace and they need to be formally trained before they can work on a product so even if they’re usually fine just following a ifixit guide they need to go through the proper process

From the screen removal tool to the battery roller to even the screwdrivers. Tools weren’t specially made for self service repair, it’s the exact same tools that technicians. It’s the Apple way all the way through. The biggest differences are we don’t rent the tools, instead we buy them in upfront and we get access to the back end diagnostics portal. If you repair iPhones often through self service repair you can buy the tools to keep rather than to rent but for most renting is the best option. I do wish for self service repair when renting you could pickup the tools at an Apple Store rather than having it shipped but I guess it could be a stocking issue.

Let's do the math here, because buying these tools makes no economical sense. I'll just calculate iPhone 12-14 models. To start off, the "big tools". Battery Press, Display Press and Heated Display Removal Fixture: $587. Heated Display pockets 5 total, $108 each. $540. Repair trays, 11 total, $50 each. $550. Press plates, 11 total, $30 each, $330. We're around $2000 now. Now that's if you're in the US, in many European countries you will pay even more. Especially considering that there aren't as many Apple Stores around here and we also have taxes to pay for these parts (every spare part is at least 10% more expensive compared to US. For example: iPhone 13 screen $239 after credit, 293€ after credit in EU.) So, as an example: iPhone 14 screen replacement: Apple: $279, you: $239 for the screen alone. You have a margin of $40. Takes around 30 minutes to complete a repair. Technician get's around $15-18 an hour. So around $7-$9 is wages. Another $7-10 goes for rent, utility bills. Now you have around $20 left. And at least in my company, there's other people who want to get paid. The marketing guys, bookkeepers, the guy at the counter, so there goes another maybe $5-7. Then you also need to replace other tools from time to time like screwdrivers, tweezers, all of that stuff. Won't even consider that here. So let's say you're left with like $12 per repair (which is not even considering your wage as a boss). Now you have to sell around 170 repairs just to make up for these tools. If you're a small shop, you will probably sell around 5-6 per day, if it goes well and customers even want to pay that price. We have 6 stores and we barely sell 6 Apple repairs A DAY. So that's 35-70 business days where you're operating at a loss. No sane business will go that route, I promise.

Actually, Austin made it look like fun. I agree Apple is doing their best to discourage anyone from repairing their stuff. But, I'd be lying if I didn't admit the tools they gave him looked cool. Next, Apple just needs to make that desoldering/resoldering robot and sell it to us so those of us with shaky hands won't need to visit the noisy Apple Genius bar ever again.

Apple wants you doing the repair the Apple way, the only differences between self service repair and a authorized repair location is that we get access to the diagnostics portal and we buy the tools upfront so we own them rather than rent them, oh and we have to go through hours of training, I’m dreading battery recertification.

The main reason why I partially dislike this method is because of the need to still call in for reserialization. If you have to enter your devices serial number anyways, all of the parts could be serialized by Apple or by their distributor before shipping, making the process easier.

I think it’s easy to say this is Apple’s passive aggressive way of preventing self service repair and they obviously don’t care about the environment. But does anyone genuinely believe they went out of their way to develop a cumbersome way to repair their products just so people wouldn’t do it? It looks more like this is the way Apple’s own support teams repair their products so they’re giving people access to the same pro level of equipment that they use internally. In other words, these tools were never meant to be used by consumers but since they were pressured to create the program, they had no choice but to give people exactly what they use internally. Now you could argue that they should’ve spent the time creating a consumer friendly set of tools. Who knows if they will or won’t. What’s clear is that that would take time

Having worked at a third-party repair place that was certified by all the major brands including Apple, these are the exact tools and manual that were available to us. The only difference with the self-service option was that we also had a macbook that we used to handle their display and battery "calibration" to pair the new parts with the board directly and run their tests and calibration process on the device. Austin doesn't show that part of the process in this video, but the last time I saw someone do full review of the repair process it required calling in and having that processed remotely, not just entering information into a portal for whatever reason, but that may have changed since the program is several years old at this point. To be fair, this process is complicated because it makes sure the device is at factory spec again once you are complete. Not just for the issue you are trying to repair, but the entire device as a whole. The battery press makes sure a set pressure is applied evenly across, so issues due to damaged internal connections don't happen (like the Samsung Galaxy Note 7). I saw quite a few display replacements fail calibration in my time due to small installation issues or other issues with the device that weren't considered field-repairable. If the device has other issues they won't let the repair complete because it won't be at factory-spec even after repair. It is a thorough repair process, but it is not very consumer friendly. I am not a fan of Apple, however... the two options Apple had for consumer repair like this were essentially to either make a consumer friendly option that compromised their existing working process that creates a true factory spec repair (something many other manufacturer's repair processes still DON'T do), along with the perspective they believe customers should have of their device repair system... or just move the complicated professional process over and show people how it actually works at the expense of it not being consumer friendly. Since Apple rarely does anything consumer-friendly and they didn't want to do these repairs in the first place, they obviously went with just opening up the existing process that worked.

As people want smaller phones with better features and water/shock resistance... phone interiors have gotten tighter and more layered and much harder to repair. Similar to old vs. new cars. So, I think it's less they're building with the intent to make it impossible to repair, it's just a unfortunate side effect of miniaturization and added features.

A few questions. When you had to reprogram the battery and screen, did you have to call Apple? When self service program first came out people had to call them and it was a big nuisance. Did you remove the original adhesive? Or did you just stick on the new adhesive over top the old material as you didn’t show with that in the video. By the way, even if I use original display, you'll still get all those messages. You have to buy the parts directly from Apple. When using aftermarket or not programming, original screen, you’re going to lose auto brightness and true tone, the auto brightness is for 13 and newer.

I replace the screen and battery on an Iphone 6s plus. Bought the small 6s battery and the right screen. Used nothing but a pointy knife and a guitar pick to pull the screen off. The smaller batter still worked, just had to tape it down and use a bit of super glue. Popped in the new screen on an IOS 14 phone, (there's a reason you don't update), and fixed. Had I updated the phone, I probably would have had issues with the screen and apple breaking that shat on purpose.

The not even the most important thing. They are fully specific with thread length and size locations. If you put them ina wrong spot it could even damage the board. I used to be a in store repair tech. Thats why myself knows about that. The screw drivers are calibrated to what the torque of apple decided. They are not just regular bits and drivers The heat press was introduced when they made the liquid ingression stronger with the 12 series forward. You are also supposed to do one repair first normally GSX didnt use to like multiple serial numbers replaced with in the same repairs. In our front end
