Happy 15th birthday to Kai-Mook
On 17/05/2009, Kai-Mook was born, being the first ever elephant born in Zoo Antwerpen.
It got a lot of media attention. People could follow it live on a big screen at the Flamingo Square and it was broadcasted by the local TV channel. Kai-Mook was even officially registered in the city's administration of births.
In 2012, a life-size bronze statue of a playful Kai-Mook was inaugurated, created by the internationally known artist Ronald De Winter. It was placed in front of the Egyptian temple, where Kai-Mook was born.
That same year, the whole of the elephant family was moved to a vast new enclosure in Zoo Planckendael. Kai-Mook got pregnant and gave birth to daughter Tun Kai in 2018.
A lot of people became loving fans instantly and follow her still, visiting her and her family as much as possible.
At first, the elephants were just standing together in the outdoor enclosure. As soon as the zookeeper made the noise with the bucket, the elephants knew that apple treats would be thrown in the water. Sometimes they even play and dive into the water, but not this time.
