Apple Upside Down Cake

A delicious dessert that looks soo good, no other decoration is needed and this makes it perfect for any occasion or family gatherings.
Ingredients:
Makes about 8-10 servings
4-5 apples
50 g (1/4 cup) +1 tbsp butter
7 tbsp (100g) sugar, divided
1 tsp (3g) ground cinnamon
Cake
1/3 cup (75g) butter, room temperature
5 tbsp (75g) sugar
3 eggs
3 tbsp (45g) sour cream
Grated peel of 1 lemon
1 tsp (5g) vanilla extract
2 tsp (8g) baking powder
11 tbsp (150g) flour
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Butter a 10-inch(26 cm) round cake pan.
2. Peel apples and sprinkle lemon juice over them. Cut them into wedges,remove the core and slice.
3. Melt the butter in a sauce pan. Add 5 tbsp of sugar and cook until sugar dissolves and mixture turns golden brown. Pour the mixture in the prepared pan and arrange the apple slices. Sprinkle 2 tbsp of sugar and add 1 tbsp of butter cut in small pieces over the apples. Cook in the oven until you prepare the batter for the cake.
4. While the apples are in the oven prepare the cake batter. Separate egg whites from the egg yolks. Whisk together the flour and baking powder in a small bowl and set aside.
5. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until well mixed. Beat in the egg yolks, sour cream, lemon zest and vanilla extract. Stir in flour mixture and mix well.
6. Whip egg whites until very stiff and firm. Fold them into the butter mixture.
7. Remove the apples from the oven and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Pour the batter over the apples and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
8. Remove the cake from the oven and let it stand for about 5 minutes.Then run a knife around the edges of the cake to loosen it from the sides of the pan and invert the cake onto a cake plate.
9. Can be served as it is or with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

Hi Ella, I am watching this video from 2013, the oldest and one of the first few of the videos, that you had put up. Video editing in 2019 is way advanced and amazing , your recipes are more detailed and precise now in terms of the quantity in grams. Thankfully , what has not changed is the way you breakdown complex recipies into simpler steps and how all of us end up making delicious food. Thanks so much for being there. Don't remember the last time I checked any other channel to make something delicious, exciting and new.

sunutimes In the ingredient list you will see I wrote 7 tbsp sugar. 5 tbsp sugar will be used for caramel and 2 tbsp are used to sprinkle on top of the apples. I just tried it and it’s soooo good!! Measurements are just right, although I reduced a tbsp of sugar when sprinkling iver the apples. Might try to not leave the apples in the oven for a shoter time, so I can get a bit of a bite. Thank you for this! 😊

Have two questions as it was not mentioned in description above; 1- How long the sliced apples should stay in the oven at first? 2- When pouring the batter over the apples, should it be done right away while the apples are hot or should wait for the apples cool down a bit? I swear this cake is the bomb dot com! It was so good once I made them... I made them at the afternoon and only got a chance to eat one piece and the next day it was gone I swear... no joke :) I was so mad... so I mad i had to make it agian the day after, and the same thing happened! My family loved it so much they ate it all and I only got a piece from each cake

What you gotta do is when you make the cake is,.. cut the preferred amount of slices when cooled, and place into containers marked "MEAT LOAF" then place into the freezer. Hint: place deep behind some old bulky frozen "whatever". Good luck. It'll still be rooted out by the Midnight FridgeRaiders.
