Apple Explained

Күн бұрын

iOS was first revealed in 2007 and has arguably become the most influential operating system in history. Before it existed, mobile phone software was cumbersome, complicated, and visually unappealing. But after its debut, the concept of a smartphone was completely redefined. With a touch-based operating system taking precedent over physical buttons. Eventually, the influence of iOS rippled across countless industries. From tablets, to watches, to cars, and even refrigerators. Since 2007, iOS has grown in ways many never expected. So let’s take a look at how it ended up where it is today. Starting with its development in 2005.

Fun fact: siri was originally available on the app store and worked with iphone 4. I remember being confused when it disappeared because it seemed to be taking off. Watching this documentary about the history of IOS brings back so many memories we've made in the early years of smartphones. It made us connect mWore with social media and text messages. It also made us consume content like watching KZfaq videos on the go, and listening to music. Those days made me feel like there was something new that comes out and it was worth getting excited about. Remember when people would line up at an Apple store to be the first to get the latest iPhone? Those days are long gone now.

I believe iOS 8 has been sort of the tipping point where Apple knew where the smartphone will move forward to. From iOS 1 - 7, it's all about perfecting the phone's basic capability. I believe it was perfected in iOS 7. Since then, the new features and updates has been a mixture of enhancing existing apps or making a new API standard to which developers can gain access to a plethora of new capabilities within the hardware and software. I believe that's a good thing, because not only Apple gives us an exciting plaything for developers to tinker about, but also for developers to provide new features for users to be excited about.

@@ImmortalChanger Apple doesn't change their design each year because they've optimized the design that works for the iPhone, why change the layout of the camera module if it 1: Impacts the performance negatively, 2: Reduces amount of available real estate on the back of the phone for ergonomic use or 3: Has no real purpose other than aesthetic? Again, this is because smartphone tech has matured to the point where making big changes to established features that work optimally in their current state is not seen as necessary by the majority of consumers. And by the way, Apple has always followed the principle of using the same exterior design for 3 release cycles before switching things up since the very beginning. A slow evolution is still change, even if only minor things are changed certain years.

iOS 11 was my personal favorite, it had that modern design yet, still held the classic font style that the iOS 8 had. Most of my love for iOS 11 comes from the status bar lol. I loved the battery icon, was longer and sharper, yet was a modern and sleeker design compared to iOS 10. Then the cellular bars which also seemed rounded than what we have today. I loved how it fit perfectly with the iPhone 8. iOS 8 is my second favorite, it’s soooo classy and nobody does it like that anymore. The blur effects are so classy, feels rich, the wallpaper that came along with it… it’s all so nice. Might prefer that over iOS 11 but it all depends.

From UI perspective, iOS 7 lacked attention to detail and polish we came accustomed to in Apple products. Old iOS felt a bit outdated, but it was very welcoming and near pixel perfect UI. iOS 7 felt like a quickly made mess at the beginning. Today it’s much better, but still it’s not on an old Apple level. I remember article on The Verge that showed potential look and feel of iOS 7 (before the keynote). It was basically the same old iOS, with some textures and reflections removed. It looked very good - most importantly it still looked unique in comparison to Android.

Siri is better then Bixby for sure. But Google’s Voice assistant is unmatched. I’m currently on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it’s an amazing device. The 14 should be more of the same.

Crazy to me how thinking back on how much of a disataser the Apple Maps was. Nearly a decade later and with almost all the problems fixed, Apple Maps still has a reputation for being a buggy mess when it’s fine now. Shows how important the early launch is

I felt like iOS was going down or not really improving much with its general usability until 12, that was a gamechanger for me and since then I've used apple for my main device. I still love androids and will always use them but I slightly prefer how iOS does certain things

iOS‘ UI went downhill starting version 7, when it went flat all of a sudden, without having the choice to customize. And the same happened to macOS/OSX past Mavericks. That‘s what happens when the customer is not high priority but someone‘s ego on how to do it a particular way and not providing any options.

IOS 9.0.2 on IPhone 6 was my first experience and is still my favorite when I comes to being jailbroken. I had many awesome tweaks that I wish was updated for modern phones. Furthermore, I was able to have features that was for newer software updates/phones before and after they were released thanks to the talented developers of those tweaks. The only problem I had was the slow down and crashes after too many tweaks was installed.

It’s weird this wasn’t mentioned, but a major change with iOS 11 was the dropped support for 32bit apps. It made a lot of previous apps that worked perfectly fine on iDevices with iOS 10 get completely locked out of those older apps. Also screen recording was added in that update.

I know it is probably mostly nostalgia, but I miss the iOS 6 feel. I know this would never happen, but I wish Apple and other companies let you choose the "theme" or appearance of the OS. If you want the look and feel of iOS 6, but with some modern improvements, then you could download that "theme" and apply it. Same with if you like the look of iOS 8 over 16, etc. Same thing I wish Microsoft would do with the Xbox OS. I loved the original "Blades" dashboard of the Xbox 360. I wish these companies would let us choose these things instead of "We know what the best user experience is, so we will force everyone to have that same experience". I know there is so much technical overhead to that, like making sure an App works and feels "right" on X number of different OS themes, but it would be cool.

Really interesting docu…the pacing and voice was excellent. The way content was delivered maintained interest throughout. Been using iPhone since iphone 3. I remember all those difficulties as IOS matured and how cool the app store used to be. Now it feels like going to Las Vegas. Everything and every bit of it (app store) is designed to suck money out of you. This has kept me (who owns 4 iMacs, 2 macbooks pros, 4 ipads, 2 minis, 8 iphones [total fanboy]) from visiting there to explore anymore. Not the friendly shareware experience of the past. Thanx for this post.
