Why iPhone Takes Your Picture Every 5 Seconds

  Рет қаралды 875,793

Apple Explained

12 күн бұрын

Recently, iPhone users have become afraid that the front facing camera might be taking photos of them every five seconds. As seen in these types of videos.
But is iPhone actually taking your photo? And if so, why?
Well, it’s true that the infrared camera activates about every five seconds and shoots out 30,000 invisible dots. This isn’t the phone taking a photo per say, but it is checking to see what’s in front of it.

That’s a basic design decision a TPM or in this case the Enclave don’t give access to the data directly. They only provide limited access usually to hashes or other predefined calls. That’s different than some storage chip where you can access all… and yes I’m in favour of forcing the companies to making the source code of such systems public but they are well established to be safe in this case.

@@saladien9987 hash is enough to "sell" you. It is even more convenient because it is small to store and, with right hashing algorithm, it is quite unique. This is great for profiling - tracks, preferences in food, places, music, ads, people (to identify the owner of device they need to scan all people that are looking on the screen, why not hash them too? i'm pretty sure that it happens without consent of "not the owner", does it remember hashes? who knows.), whatever they want to know about you. They've hashed you and put to database, and they sell you to local ads buyers without even need to know your face. Also, Apple knows the hashing algorithm, can they hash a photo from police and try to match it with database of hashes? once they discovered a number of suspects they know their devices so they can track location of all of them, then filter out. Having your face next to exact location is not good, especially if you don't know exactly what is done under the hood.

For security, never use biometrics to unlock your phone. Naturally, someone could force you to unlock it with your fingerprint. Some may be able to trick some phones or computers with a photo. But one thing people often don't realize is that police can hold your phone up to your face to unlock it and search your phone without your consent...legally. Use a pattern or set of numbers that isn't related to your birthday or address.
@babybirdhome
@babybirdhome 3 күн бұрын
That may be true of Androids, but with any iPhone, all you have to do is press and hold the power and volume down button for a second until it comes up with the power off prompt, and biometric unlock is disabled until you enter your passcode/passphrase no matter what police would like to do. If you want to protect your privacy, just make sure any time you get pulled over, the first thing you do is grab your phone and press and hold your power and volume down buttons until it vibrates - then your device is unlocked and you cannot be compelled to unlock it or provide your passcode or passphrase. But what you SHOULD do is go into your settings and enable complex passcodes, so that you can use more than just digits to lock your device - that makes it a lot harder to break into. Although if you are a criminal, don’t think for an instant that law enforcement can’t get into your device if they really need to - they can and they will if they believe you’re hiding something from them. It just isn’t cheap or easy.

Let's be honest, they most likely do use the IR sensor to track other facial features, and how would you know if they stored the data or not, and even if they didn't how would you know that they won't be able to track it if they want to. The saving battery gimmick can be very easily replaced with the already incorporated MEMS systems where the phone has an internal gyroscope and it knows if it is held or not. It would make no sense to hold the phone as if you we're using it if you wouldn't be looking at the screen.

this is not even remotely similar to windows 11 recall. iPhone attention awareness checks whether there is a person looking at a phone or not. so, there is *no* photo being taken. the ai algorithm actively checks whether there is a person in front of the phone without taking any pictures. whereas Windows 11 recall takes pics of your desktop and *stores* it for future use. this includes your browsing history as well.
