After the tragic loss of band member and friend, Andrew Fletcher, members of Depeche Mode were left to reflect on what life truly means to them. On their new album ‘Momento Mori’, Depeche Mode mourns the loss of a friend and adjusts to the band's new reality.
Band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore sit down with Zane Lowe for an inside look at the band's personal struggles and how they made the music they are known for today.

This is probably the best interview I have seen with Depeche Mode, The interviewer has such a deep understanding of Dave and Martins thinking, they were on the same wavelength, and because of this they opened up, pretty impressive considering they are normally so guarded and cautious.

@@kenduffy5397 He actually did get in the way a few times and spoke over them, but I give him a pass because of his enthusiasm and knowledge of the band and their art. I think both Zane and Dave dominated the interview when they should’ve let Martin have more of a chance to get his thoughts out as he’s always been fairly quiet and shy in interviews. He was probably happy to let them though!

Just read an old interview of Frank Ocean where he said he knocked on their studio door hoping just to be able to tell them just how much of a fan he was. Next thing he knew Martin was helping him refine a chorus on a song he was working on. Frank was star-struck at how down-to-each with zero pretensions... just a musician helping another out.

Way back in 1982, my cousin gave me the "A Broken Frame" album which he bought but didn't like and I have been a life long fan over the past 42 years. Fletch's passing felt like a death in the family and very profound to me at the as age of 58. When Momento Mori was announced, I was elated and sad as Fletch would not be in it but after listening to the album and seeing the respect by Dave and Martin for their departed and deeply missed friend, I am jubilant to celebrate a truly astounding album which to me is a both a celebration of life and death which none of us can avoid. Here's to more Depeche Mode till the end of my days

Last year of high school, 1987. I bought the album, Black Celebration and for months I listened to this on my record player laying on the floor with these new Sony Headphones I had saved for weeks to get. From there the doors opened. I ended up becoming a musician, later falling into drugs and addiction and then got sober in 2002. All of this time with Depeche Mode being a major part of my listening time. Decades. Here, Zane, you show complete reverence and it makes me so deeply happy. I kept smiling and laughing with you guys in this and the other clip. To know that both of these men have come full circle. They are now Dave Gahan and Martin Gore and none of the ghosts haunt them the same now. Their ghosts have become accompaniment to their music and I love that. Wonderful interview. Thank you.😊❤

You could tell in old interviews that Andy DID love being in the band and was like the 'Dad' to the rest of them plus he had a great sense of humor and smart!. He seemed like such a sweet man and I miss seeing him! I 're-discovered' DM las year and I'm so glad. Back in the day I always loved their music on the radio, but don't remember ever seeing them unless they were on MTV. I was a young busy Mom of 2 teens boys who were into the heavy metal rock bands and not so much into synthpop, but I loved them. They were a different sound from the hair bands and it was very refreshing! I've binge-watched every video I can find and just Love them. I almost felt like I knew them. I was finishing nursing school, studying and working, so I hadn't had the opportunity to see them. I'm so glad they're recording and performing again! By the way, this was a great interview! Thanks!

I loved Dave as a teen in the 80,s madly truly deeply ha ha , loved synth music and loved depeche mode my all time favourite band , saw them live three times in the 80,s .. I never imagined I would be seeing them again over 40 years later in Manchester !! , these guys feel like family to me even though they don’t know me , and I’ve grown with their changing style but still the unique Depeche sound that keeps them Depeche , and a massive fan base , .. you could say they lost a brother really when Andy passed away suddenly , this interview was done very sensitively and I watched as Dave and Martin spoke about Andy with so much love and affection and I wanted to hug them , the part about the pub with Andy and martin made me smile , I love these guys ❤ thank you for this interview ❤️

I enjoyed the new album and thought it sounded fresh, purged, retro, and melodic. And as a lifelong fan, they’re still impressive live. But I’m disappointed in Dave’s attitude about Alan. He said “All respect to Al, but...” and then proceeded to diminish his contribution. After all this time surely we can recognize that it was the perfect creative storm of Martin’s poetic songwriting, Dave’s dynamic performance, and Alan Wilder’s incredible ear for powerful, dark, atmospheric soundscapes that made the magic happen. (Along with Fletch’s empowerment of Martin, and Vince Clarke’s getting them started.) It’s only right to give Wilder credit for his meticulous work creating their sound on their best albums that delivered the great success they’ve enjoyed since. All the outside producers they’ve worked with have consistently expressed admiration for Alan’s dedication and talent in every interview and documentary. The bandmembers themselves have repeatedly reminisced about leaving the long hours of studio work, crucial to an electronic band, to Alan. No guest producer is going to be as invested. I can understand them getting tired of hearing about Alan returning to the band, or about Fletch not contributing much musically, or even still harboring some feelings of abandonment, but not this unappreciative lack of graciousness. Honoring Fletch doesn’t have to involve dismissing Alan, or the reverse.

Love this series of interviews with Zane, so out of the box and so insightful, the Fletch in the Pub story it`s the perfect summary of what his role in the band was, the common guy that became a Rock`n Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, DM is about irony, and Fletch behind the rack of synths on a stage clapping his heart out it is the very essence of what DM is, it`s a feeling more than a band, a way of living more than a music project.

This is a FANTASTIC interview.... I love how Martin tries to be incognito & move to Santa Barbara like Dave says he tried to find a bit of Paradise. He moved to beautiful Santa Barbara (it really is stunning) anyways he finds a little "English pub" called "The Ol Kings road"-or something or other. Finds a place he can chit chat throw back a couple of pints. The Englishman ask hey what do you do for a living? I mean how is this guy everyday at 1:00 pm able to go to this Pub and #1 afford the pints & #2 (the most important) afford to live in California! Trust me I know I was born in raised in LA Basically to rent a 3 bdrm nothing special/fancy is around 3,000++ . The house I grew up in 3 bdrm 2 bath pool & jacuzzi 1 story . The backyard bigger than the house is going for $950,000 !All the houses pretty soon will be 1 mill ticket. So YES what do u do for a living Martin that affords you the luxury to sit here and throw pints back everyday at 1.... Oh I'm in one of the biggest bands I sell out arena tours all over the 🌎😅.Fletch on the other hand 1st 5 minutes he's there he tells the Guy he's in Depeche Mode! So proud may he R.I.P. I saw them when I was 14 Pasadena Music for the Masses & I will see them this fall in Dallas I'm a Lucky girl ... Aren't we all who gets to see them live!

I've just seen DM in TO 🇨🇦 and it was by far one of the most memorable concerts I've ever attended. I mean, I've seen the Weekend with my daughter a few months ago and no offense, the Weekend couldn't reach the water to Dave on stage. His energy, his voice & the whole band experience was just an earthshattering moment. It is just great, passing the DM fan torch to my 17yr old. 😂❤ The tribute to Fletch was lovley too. He is so missed.

Great interview! Can't believe they played at Bridge House, Canning Town. Unreal. 🎉 Shame that place is gone.

Your interview was incredible. I loved Martins story about Fletch in the bar and the laughter that ensued. Your questions were so good and I almost felt in the room. Thank you!!!

Dave has such a beautiful deep spoken voice, and Martin is still shy and cute as always. I ❤ them so much since forever and will do forever ❤❤❤
