Members of the legendary hard rock band Metallica, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo sit down with Zane Lowe to celebrate their 40th anniversary. The band members walk through the incredible story of Metallica, and reminisce on starting out in San Francisco, assembling an elite band of uniquely gifted musicians, and evolving into one of the most famous bands to ever take the stage. Never taking time to pat themselves on the back, Metallica was always driven to look towards the future of rock, and they cite this as the reason for their success. They discuss the influence of Jason Newsted and Bob Rock, and thank the heavy metal bands they competed against for pushing them towards greatness.

This may have been Metallica's best interview ever, and I've watched a lot of their interviews. How they talk about Rob and Jason, how they let Kirk actually talk, how James seems so relaxed and comfortable, how Lars is being honest with himself, it's awesome.

“We love you but you’re not Cliff” Wow I think I finally understood the feeling of these guys towards Jason, it’s not justified of course, but they never went through a grieving process for Cliff, they did things really fast and somehow I think they felt like they were replacing him
@elizabethhock4414
@elizabethhock4414 2 жыл бұрын
Cliff had a lot of input into the musical production on the first three albums. But Cliff was a musical genius, and had studied music, and music theory. Jason was not strong in that way, so I can see where maybe his ideas weren't used or maybe even shrugged off, as irrelevant. Jason is like someone mentioned, an average bass player, adequate, but in no comparison to Cliff.
@lauraduran198
@lauraduran198 2 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethhock4414 Yeah I agree with you, but I'm not talking about the musical process, I'm talking about the emotional aspect of "replacing" Cliff with Jason. They weren't doing that, for sure, I mean you can never replace a person, but they somehow felt that way

@@elizabethhock4414 based on James’ other interviews on this subject, I think you’re absolutely right. Cliff was just as much a composer as as he was a bass player. My understanding is that Jason came in and wanted to slot with the band with as little creative friction as possible (which I get, these are big egos, it’s a new job for him and he doesn’t want to ruffle feathers right out the gate). James has even spoken about being annoyed Jason would just follow his guitar parts and not deviate. So when he says “we love you but you’re not Cliff”, I think he is talking just as much musically as he is personally. I think Jason was a great bass player and one of the best live performers the genre has seen, so this isn’t a slight on him at all.

Agree so much. I hate he had to leave. When I was 16 me and my best friend and my brother went to our very first Metallica concert and we were standing at the edge of the balcony screaming every lyric in headbanging the whole show, and Jason acknowledged us and pointed at us and gave us a nod and through the metal “horns” up at us and that just made our night. For a lot of us that got into Metallica in the late 80s early 90s. Jason always felt like he belong to and Jason always seem like the one that related to the fans the most. Don’t get me wrong. I love Rob and I think he’s a phenomenal bass player but I hate that Jason had to leave but I understand it at the same time so if we can’t have Jason I’m glad we have Rob but you are so correct. It’s not like Jason is one of the 22 members of Megadeth that no one knows their name, and was just there for an album and a couple tours and then gone by the time the next album came out. No, Jason was a huge part of Metallica.

Lars: "Whether you like it or not, it's 100 percent us" - Metallica in a nutshell and something that goes back to what even Cliff Burton said back in 1986 about doing things their way. With all the things this band has done it's still mindboggling that people still don't get that and have the audacity to say what they have done in the last 30 years is not Metallica. Further proof that some fans simply never got it.

They would have gone down this same musical path even if Cliff hadn't passed. He loved all kinds of music and he loved to experiment. It’s interesting, I came to the comments to say the complete opposite, hahah! I’m not familiar with his work, but it really bugged me how he kept talking over the band during the interview and at times making it more about himself rather than the record and band. The fanboy moments where he got to pile on the adulations were sweet, though! You could tell it still means a lot to the guys when they get told how much they’ve done for people.

@@violet_is_bleu It's not super frequent, but from what I perceived the purpose of the interview to be, I'll give a few examples. From the first half hour: 8:27, 16:25, 16:34, 17:26, 22:50, 24:10, 26:07, 29:31, 29:37. I know I didn't get all of them, and they're generally nothing crazy egregious, but since I'm not familiar with Zane, I'm not automatically okay with him talking over the person he's interviewing. To me he just looks like a hipster with an ego, which is probably quite far from the truth - So please forgive my ignorance. I was just kind of taken aback by how often he'd interject into the band's stories and when they're formulating their thoughts about what he'd just asked them, he might chip in with his own words to help them along. To me, that kind of goes against the point of conducting an interview.

This interview underscores why I have enjoyed and embraced many different musical styles for the past 65 years. The key is, no matter the style, and metal is no different from pop, jazz or alternative, there are universal musicalities, harmonies and melodies that transcend all else. That is what's important. To have Elton John give a nod to Nothing Else Matters speaks volumes. I am not surprised but instead extremely pleased. Kudos guys, keep sharing. You are all "fambly."

@@chrisa5631 Apparently you didn't watch the entire interview, because James *was* talking about their early years when he mentioned drive, ambition, passion, and dedication to music and how he and Lars shared those same traits to a high degree, which is why they connected right away after they met and began jamming together. Also, pretty much all bands and musicians lose some of that drive and ambition after they've achieved great success, because once you've made it big, that type of edge and intensity diminishes because it's no longer necessary - the desire to make it far in music is what creates that mindset. So after you've achieved that goal, it diminishes, which is only natural. They still are consistently great, however - of course Hardwired isn't Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets, but it's a very good album regardless.
