Appliances loaded with electronic wizardry that you can control with your phone app may seem appealing, but how many of these features will you really need and use? Like all complex devices, they will sometimes go sour, perhaps disabling your appliance. Finding a competent repairman won't be easy, and most often the repair will be very expensive. I'm quite happy with my dumb, uncomplicated kitchen appliances.

Now the problem is the right to repair!!!, more appliance manufacturers are not letting you make repairs or even for an appliance repair person to get parts for and repair!!!

Not only that but we've all had some flashy gizmo that was artificially obsoleted and put to pasture when a company deems it no longer profitable to provide service for it. Think about how long you keep large appliances for. I'm still using 20 year old washers, dryers and ranges and repair them myself for very little money. Congrats, your 5 year old multi thousand dollar smart appliance is now irreparable landfill fodder because nobody makes a touch screen for it.

Im so glad I dont sell appliances anymore lol 8 years at Lowes I always said one thing to customers,Don't be afraid to mix and match brand's if you don't plan on moving.I Have a Black Bosch dishwasher ,a Black Samsung Fridge,a stainless and black Samsung Range,LGStainless and Black Over the range microwave, White Maytag Washer and Dryer,and a White Frigidaire Stand up freezer in garage.Also look around for the SOS returns and scratch and dent,if you can save 75% off because a dent or scratch you will never see or can cover is worth it

Washer/dryer units are very popular in the UK, and work just fine over here. I’ve been with my wife for twenty years and have only had two units in that time.

That's because washer dryer in the US actually last longer. You hear about people using a 10-20 year old appliances in the US quite often, especially if those appliances have old school design. It also break down less often.

UK habits are not as demanding, with smaller load runs. US living is outsized, over the top, and huge. Separate units process 2x at min, and usually 3x the volume of UK/Euro standards.

Really appreciate these videos. I was initially looking at one of those $4,000 pro-looking ranges, but found your videos, did more research and found that it only gave me the look and one powerful burner, and like you mentioned no service network at all. I don't think I will regret delaying my purchase and saving up for a Wolf. Thank you!

I've owned a FiveStar, dual fuel for 28 years has been flawless for all those years and am about to buy a new one. It's a great product. I like how out of the 4 burners, the front 2 burners have a really, low flame if needed for delicate stuff, or keeping something warm. I'm getting this one: FiveStar TPN276BW but FiveStar has a wide variety of sizes and choices. I like FiveStar better than Wolf or Viking.

I had a combo washer-dryer unit in Japan that worked well for the five years I had it. I originally went that direction because of space limitations and the fact that the apartment I lived in did not have access to the sun (I could literally reach out and touch the next building from my balcony) made "drying on the line" (which was the most popular way for my Japanese friends to dry their laundry) highly impractical. I never had a problem with my w/d combo unit--I would throw in a load of laundry before I went to bed, let it run overnight, and have dry clothes ready to go in the morning. I was living alone, so I used it a couple times a week for clothes and then on the weekends I would clean my bedsheets / etc. I agree this may not be a great option for families or people who do a lot of laundry, but for people in specific circumstancs they might be a viable option. (Edit-"for the five years I had it"-I moved back to the US after about 5 years. It was still working well when I left the country.)

@YaleAppliance1 I've had washer-dryer combos strongly recommended by friends who owned and used them overseas - both in the Pacific Rim, and in Europe, singles, couples, and families with dependents. All raved about them, and wondered why the US was 'behind the times' and inefficient. Is this a case where units manufactured for the US market are simply poorly executed (design, engineering, and/or manufacturing) compared to countries where combos are the norm?

I know the combo washer/dryers aren’t very popular and many people hate them, but we’ve had an LG for about ten years now and after my husband made a key modification, namely cutting down the drain pipe that the house came with so it was closer to the floor so the water drains all the way, it’s been fantastic (before that the clothes came out damp). We are a family of four and do probably 5 or 6+ loads a week. It also went through 6 years of our kids wearing cloth diapers and washing them in that machine. It’s needed two parts replaced (the same part twice actually). I really love the set it and forget quality that it provides. My daughter throws her laundry in at the last moment before bed and the next morning her clothes are clean and dry and ready for her. No midnight switching necessary. And the lint collects on the rubber part of the door and we just grab it and throw it away every few washes. Pretty easy. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I would never go back to a two machine system again and I wish manufacturers would focus on making this machine better and better so it would actually become the problem free blessing it could be.

@@YaleAppliance1 We have them at our homes in Germany and Finland and also on our boat, but I haven't been able to find one in Puerto Rico. They work amazingly well, wash and dry all in one cycle. Easy to maintain and we've had over a decade of hassle-free use with the first one, which still looks and functions like new. Highly recommended machines for those who can get ahold of them!

BTW, although not a law in Indiana, I required the builder and HVAC vendor to put in a makeup air return in the upstairs kitchen, and especially in the basement kitchen, since it does not have windows. The basement has a kitchen-aid double convection built-in oven, the kitchen-aid 36-inch gas cooktop with five burners and the kitchen-aid 65K total output with a 400 CFM motor hood. Thank you for bringing this critical feature to my attention before the build started. No change orders are needed!

You sold me a single evaporator LG fridge for a fraction of the dual evaporator alternative and it’s great. You have to be very careful about interrupting air flow at the very back or stuff will freeze. But for the cost it’s great.

Another great video! Re: Induction Cooking In my area finding an electrician to install a new / upgraded panel is not a problem. Finding the parts (electrical panel, meter, breakers, etc)is the challenge. I just installed a 200 amp panel for this new construction that includes Induction and all electric appliances except for the tankless water heater. It took over 3.5 months to find all the parts. Of course, it took 2.5 months for the power company to approve the location of the panel. SMH. I'm looking forward to playing with the Wolf induction cooktop that is being installed. Btw, I bought the Sub zero/Wolf/Asko suite of appliances cooktop 16 months ago. It is not my primary residence. After I play with these appliances, I'm going to plan the renovation of my primary home's kitchen.

In Germany it’s the exact opposite. Houses are prepared for electric cooking as a standard, but finding an electrician (because insurance won’t pay, if someone, who is not an electrician installs the unit) is or at least can be difficult.

@@jennyh4025 Electric cooking is the standard in much of the USA also. I've only seen a gas range in person once and it was an old range that was lit with a match.

I love my Fisher & Paykel steam oven. I ditched the microwave for the steam oven. I use it daily! I also use my F&P coffee maker daily, its fairly easy to clean!

Love your videos. I THINK I have learnt a lot, especially about venting. Never thought about it before and yes I would have gone for down vents. Not now. We don't have any laws or regulations about gas cooktops, yet, and gas is very popular. I knew nothing about made-up air. However, I open all my windows so get air coming in from outside as well as flying insects. Hopeful will be building a new home and definitely keep watching the Yale videos At the moment like induction cooktops and steam combo wall ovens possible Miele

I had a front load LG washer and it held a larger amount of clothes but didn't wash good. Most front loader don't. Getting my much smaller speed queen was money well spent. I'd rather do twice as many loads and get clean clothes in the end. Just a thought :)

Curious about the Samsung refrigerator: I have had mine for 15 years (french ss with water inside the door) and just recently we had a leak in the white water line, causing an extreme mess. Water went into our basement and we had to rip out the soggy drywall behind the unit. Has this waterline problem been resolved in the newer Samsung units, such as the Bespoke line? Please advise ASAP, need to go out shopping for a new one today.

Your videos and blog are the primary reason that I have had my brother buy all his appliances (for a new home in West Wareham MA) from you. That plus the fact that you service what you sell makes Yale Appliance the best option in that area. The only item I was less than thrilled with is the Yale brand vent hood, because its built-in LED lights have low lumens and cannot be replaced with a higher-lumen bulb. Everything else has been great.

Fotile makes a sink/dishwasher combo that at first I was really stoked about getting one for out KZfaq Channel's kitchen.... After I thought about it, I decided maybe it's a bad idea thinking that if there is a repair issue with it down the road and they go out of production, I might be stuck, and if I didn't design the kitchen with at least the space to pull a cabinet and replace it with a dishwasher cabinet, I could be in trouble there. What do you think about Fotile's washer combo?

I really appreciate your honest comments and perspective. We are upgrading our dishwasher, refrigerator and single wall oven. My wife wants black stainless steel. The fork test showed the Bosch appliance did better than the others but I cannot find black stainless steel Bosch refrigerator with the third drawer option or a stand alone Bosch black stainless steel single wall oven that can cook with steam. Do you think that black stainless is too trendy and will date our home, even if we go with Bosch? Do you see that more manufactures adding steam cooking to the product lines so I can get the features I want in the future? Thanks very much for your informative videos.

My MIL got a downdraft range about 20 years ago for a beach house she had built for the family to use. Hated that thing. You couldn't really cook in the house unless you opened up several windows to vent all the fumes it didn't take care of, so it became a summer-only beach house.

Great video. I am planning on renovating my apartment's kitchen, and due to building requirements and the size of my kitchen, I am limited to selecting a 30" gas range with an over the range microwave (no ventilation to the outside). While those options are not ideal, it's what I have to work with. If I have a combined budget of around $5,500 for the range and microwave (I want to splurge somewhat on the range), what do you think the best options are? And are there any over the range microwaves you would recommend/features I should prioritize (especially since I can't vent to the outside)?

First all the over the range microwaves are similar so they are similarly bad. That said, you have plenty of options for a range/micro combo: Cafe, LG Studio, even Thearmador with the free dishwasher...

Would love to hear more about side by side dual oven ranges. Also, over range microwaves have low CFM hoods in addition to the point you make about their capture area. A microwave is good by itself. It was never designed to be a vent hood. They remind me of those combo stereos of yesteryear that had a turntable, an 8-track, a tuner and an amp and more. Maybe that’s why EJ Korvette’s went out of business?

While I do not think they're ideal, I would imagine that the overwhelming majority of people who buy washer/dryer combo units, do so, due to space limitations. I do not have space for separate units. An LG combo unit was in the house 8 years ago when I bought it. I would imagine my unit is 10 to 12 years old. The dryer stopped working in approximately March of 2023, however, the washer still works. The dryer was always just "adequate", but I think the washer works about as well as any washing machine I've ever used. On my 10 to 12 year old unit, I always got the best results by washing, removing the clothes from the unit, letting it dry out for about an hour, and then putting them back in to dry. As a single guy, it was/is not a big deal to me. For a family of 4+ I could see where it could become a problem. Whether it's phones, vehicles, or appliances, I too highly prefer "old-school", basic, 'dumb' technology. To the degree (that it's still) possible, I avoid LCD screens, apps, and "smart" technology. Showing my age but overwhelmingly, the stuff is needless and gimmicky.

I do like your points. But when it comes to induction ranges I think they are forth it. + the 25 AMP is when in full use (so all the tops) if you add HVAC and a Washmachine to it you could get issues, but in all honesty this can be simply avoided by some minor power management.

Any kitchen remodel will requires a range hood vented to the exterior, at least in CA. (Enforcement may vary based on jurisdiction but it is the law statewide)

An induction cooktop is great until you have a week-long power outage. Until the electric grid is 100% reliable, gas is the only choice.

OTR microwaves are a necessity when your kitchen is an 83 square foot galley like mine. Mine does vent into a duct through the attic to the downwind side of the house.

I also appreciate your videos and have seen many of them. I am curious about your thoughts regarding a cooktop or range in the island. I am remodeling my kitchen and adding an island, and I thought it would be cool to cook while still watching a game or tv show. There's not a lot of prep for my Top Ramen, so I'll be standing at the stove more, and I feel so closed off staring at the wall, although I have been doing it all my life. I planned to have a large updraft with a return air, and hoped to have the hood raised a bit to not interfere with seeing the living room. Would love your thoughts or those from others who truly have solid information. Wish you had a store in Los Angeles, as I would be a customer for sure. Thank you.

Absolutely disagree with the combo washer/dryer. I have one in a house I'm 'renting' to my son & his friends. It handles six young-adults (so pretty much constant use) just fine. The 'lint' is captured in a filter along the drain line and only needs to be emptied every few weeks and takes only a minute to do - most lint just washes down the drain with the water.

@@YaleAppliance1 I've only had to replace the pump since I've had it. And that was a 1/2 hour job with a $50 part that I installed myself. That's only an anecdote, not compiled data, but I do think as they improve the design (making the filter easier to clean so it can be done more often, for example, which likely would have saved the pump) you'll find that it's the far better option than separate units with a hot air dryer. Especially since there's also no risk of fire from a lint-coated dryer vent like there is from a standard dryer. Frankly, that alone makes it worth it to me, as dryers are a leading cause of house fires.

Downdrafts work but not when used in an island. Mine was fine as it is against the exterior wall and only needs to vent a couple of feet.

Ok two things 1. I have a LG combo washer/dryer it is the bigger capacity it’s a life saver because of the space it fits in I do 3 to 4 loads a week in just fine so I. Pushing back on you comments about the combo and as far as when I have no problem with lint in my clothes with this particular washer, so I don’t know what to say, but mine works great. 2. As far as the induction range it’s great for some people, but there are some of us that cannot use that I have an electronic device that’s wired into my spinal cord for pain control, and I cannot be around or use induction even though the newer systems are a lot better controlled and put out less magnetic force. It can affect and will affect my device so adduction is not always available for everybody as much as I would love to have induction cooking I can’t I have medical reasons, so therefore I either stick with electric or gas.

Induction may be faster, but there is nothing quite like cooking in copper on gas. I will always be the sole defender of the dual fuel range, but I know I am the unusual case - I have only ever used an oven for baking.

+TheRacerRich- Exaaaaaaaaaaactly... They coined the phrase- "NOW your cooking with gas!" For a reason. Any and all chefs worthy of the title cook on gas. NEVER electric or induction. Nothing more need be said. Class dismissed.

@@YaleAppliance1 Agreed, we have had our Frigidaire Gallery induction cooktop for more than 5 years now, it was not very expensive (well under $1,000), no need to upgrade our electrical panel as it uses the same power as our old electric cooktop but it's much more efficient, so in the end it's also using less power. There are no knobs and since there isn't a hot burner, food spills do not burn to the stove top. It's the easiest to clean cooktop we've ever owned. Water boils in about 2 minutes, and the burner reacts just as fast as gas when it comes to increasing or decreasing the temperature applied to your cookware. Speaking of cookware, an induction cooktop does not require expensive pans, many of the pots & pans we already owned worked fine when we got our induction cooktop. There were a few pans that didn't work so we purchased a few replacements. Compared to a gas cooktop, an induction cooktop is also so much safer, no open flame to catch your sleeve on fire, no noxious gases or (somewhat) dangerous spent gases to be concerned about. I think once more people see the advantages of an induction range/cooktop, you will see gas and electric cooktops become far less popular.

@@243wayne1meh I'm a chef and know many more, more and more are switching to induction. It's just smarter and greener. Gas is as someone said, just sexier for some people, they like that visual responsiveness. My home air is cleaner without the gas stove now.

My kitchen was made in 1939, with no opportunity for an overheard cooktop vent. Below the kitchen is what used to be a coal room, so it has an opening to the outside. If the downdraft type exits or can be made to exit the range, I'll be poking a hole in my floor, thanks. Might even put the exhaust fan in the basement.

I hate my downdraft cooktop but, unless I want to spend a few tens of thousands of dollars remodeling the whole kitchen, I'm stuck with that option. It's not that a person shouldn't buy that type of appliance, it's that they should avoid building that type of kitchen layout IF practical. A lot of homes are built with no practical way to install an overhead exhaust hood that vents to the outside. I have two such homes.

The only major downside to an induction cooking top is what happens when the power goes out. I live out in the country. I use propane. All I have to do is light it with a match and I’m cooking again, and the only thing hooked up to the propane, is the range/oven. That gives me three years of propane with 150 gallon tank.

Make up air is really important. International building code ( and many US state codes) require makeup air if you have a vent hood moving 400CFM or more. You see lots of people putting in 1000-1500 CFM range hoods without any consideration makeup air. Danger waiting to happen.

Samsung Flex Duo oven and range…. It is a lifesaver for small kitchens. So much better than regular dual wall ovens. I have both the range and wall oven. They work and cook great. I’ve had them for many years now and they have performed flawlessly.

@@YaleAppliance1 What if you can get one for only $100 more than the same model but single door? Also, since the space is smaller with the plate, wouldn't it be slightly better if you only want to use one to reduce the heat time in a sorta air fryer method? I comes with two elements and two convection fans so it seems that you would get some benefit from it for a minimal upcharge. Is it truly not worth it?

Something else to stay away from, if you care about money in these hard times: Anything with fancy electronic gizmos. The fridges with all the electronic touch screens on the doors. Icemakers. Washers and dryers with digital display readouts. In fact, one of the best washers on the market for reliability and longevity, is undoubtedly Speed Queen. And most of their washers have zero electronics, and have old style dials (though they aren't mechanical, sadly, they're hooked up to a circuit board). Electronics fail much faster than mechanical components (which boggles the mind because you'd think it SHOULD be the other way around).

For a fresh take on combo washer dryers check out the new GE heat pump unit. It doesn't require a 220V outlet or a vent and uses half the electricity of a regular electric dryer. It can wash and dry in as little as two hours and gets rave reviews.

I bought a house with a Kenmore refrigerator that was purchased in 2019. Bottom hinge closer broken, and tried to get the part replaced through Sears and Kenmore. That part is no longer available and not manufactured anymore? A 4 year old refrigerator, and no parts available, is too soon to consider a refrigerator obsolete? I am not buying another refrigerator, and will try to creatively repair it myself. Kenmore used to be considered a top brand 20 years ago, but not so much anymore.

I want to change out my electric stove for a gas stove. I will have to run a new gas line to the kitchen, which is not a big deal, but all I have is a recirculating fan in the microwave above the stove. Do I need to add a new venting system?

Most homes have at least 100Amp service and Induction stoves use 50amps unless you have multiple stoves or are going to weld or charge a BEV at the same time it shouldn’t be a problem.

@@YaleAppliance1 I have a Condo that is primarily gas and it still has 100Amp service. It was built in the 1980s but it is a larger Condo. You lead me to do some research and 100Amp service became the minimum service for residential dwellings in 1959 by National Electrical Code. The biggest problem with electric stoves is when they will primarily be used. In the evening when electrical reserves are at their lowest in many parts of the country due to renewables.

Is there someplace in North America threatening to ban gas ranges across the board? Here the ban is only on new construction, no homeowner is being forced to pay $3,000 to rip out an existing gas installation. That would definitely be a bad idea (if it was true).

A few things: "Smart" appliances may seem great at first. Being able to turn your stove on or off remotely could be a life saver. BUT, what about in 3 years when the phone app is no longer supported!? Also, features can be changed or deleted as the appliance ages in order to "encourage" you to upgrade your appliances. DUMB appliances are still best. The dumber the better! Induction? I know they've gotten better, but they can be really rough on pans and may void the warranty on certain pans. Downdraft vents? I'd be inclined to agree that they're bad, but I've got a 50 year old Jenn-aire that works great. In fact, the whole range works so well that I've been reluctant to change it. Even though it's VERY 70s looking! At least it's not avocado green! 😊

Look for appliances that do not have computer chips in them. If you want reliability, go back to the basics. No, see thru doors, no ice makers, and yes to freezers on top.

Freezers on top, while it's what I'm used to as well, just isn't an optimal design. Bottom freezers make more sense. When I replace my fridge, I'll probably go with a French Door model. Right now, nobody can pass when either the fridge or freezer section door is open, a frenchie will eliminate half that problem.

Sadly, venting correctly isn't always an option. The yahoos who built the townhome I'm in provided a recirculating Over the Range microwave. That's it. I CAN'T vent because the folks who live in the unit above me would object to a vent pipe going through their living room. This strikes me as a hard fail on the part of the architect, the builder, and the local codes. Hopefully, folks getting places being built currently don't face this fail.

Washer-driers don't have a lint problem because the act of washing clears it away, they also tend to be condenser driers which is the other reason they don't have lint issues. The real reason to not buy them is they're not as effective as standalone driers; but if you're short of space, they're perfectly fine. I use one all the time, and in my old apartment had one for 10 years and never had an issue, and that was a house share with housemates who didn't give a damn about basic maintenance. Also I hate recirculating hoods with a passion, they aught to be illegal.

Interesting, I just bought a rather expensive: "VENTS-US Twinfresh Comfo RB1-50-2 Ductless Single Room Energy Recovery Ventilator for Fresh Air Intake, Stale Air Exhaust, and Heating/Cooling Recapture" It's exactly what looking for, bring fresh air into house, warmer and filter, however it's way too expensive. Be nice to have an American made model, pretty sure the Twinfresh is made in Eastern Europe, maybe Russian. It uses a ceramic heat exchanger to "heat" the air...yes ceramic, see how that goes.

I agree with Bob in the comments, high tech is NOT the way to go, simple has and does work,. As far as I know cooking/heating with gas never hurt anyone and if it did why is the USA sending LNG to other countries? Beware of government bureaucrats telling you what is good for you and especially those who force you to do what they want you to do 'for your own good.' FYI, the electrical gird is not reliable, is vulnerable to terrorism, and as in all things Murphy Law applies, especially in regard to price.

The issue is that most kitchen ventilation systems are inadequate for the powerful gas stoves made today. Thus, expect to new guidelines for vent hoods for a given gas stove before they stop selling gas stoves

Never hurt anyone? My mom cooked on gas and I am ok. I think. However, todays gas ranges are 2-3 more powerful and building is more efficient. You have greater output staying in your home. Vent properly and it wont be an issue in your home. When we look at climate change, that is a different story.

@@conniesteinlicht8959 No. He said don't buy one unless you buy a 30" one, and even if you go bigger, there are trade-offs of which you should be cognizant. Basically comes down to "if you use your oven primarily for baking, then electric is the way. If roasting, braising, broiling, then gas."

@@YaleAppliance1 Look at the supply chain. Tech is a BAD idea. The US is pulling away from China and there is a major shift underway around semiconductor availability. This is all about long-term supportability and requires a broader context and understanding than MTBF numbers.
