Howdy all, In this video, For all you folks who ask, “Can you apply a skip trowel texture with base coat stucco?” The answer is yes.
In this video were use stucco called Hansons premium stucco which we add the 100-pound bag and add three hundred pounds of sand, this makes stucco.
Ratios for sand and stucco mixing by the book.
How much sand is for each coat of stucco?
Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
Most times, we mix 3 parts sand to every one part cement plaster.
It’s a bit more complicated, but if someone has done the same thing and knows this, you should use the same base coat to match the original finish.
Note the existing walls with the stucco skip trowel finish had been painted.
The cement plaster I used to apply the basecoat was the same sand constancy; thus, I could spread a skip towel finish with the basecoat cement plaster.

Howdy ArfaBiscuit Dude, no worries, FYI, to use a base coat cement plaster takes a bit more time in as like in this video, where the wall is perfectly set the mud flows off the trowel like magic, where the basecoat is a bit softer and or not set, a slight touch is required and more edge of the trowel necessary, and lastly where the wall is set or hard the trowel must be applied flatter, more pressure applied or all the mud will fall off as the wall is too dry to accept or better term would be to absorb the finish, Sort of like the old Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it helps to have it justtttt right. live long and plaster Giordano’s rendering plaster images and teaching video’s

Nice job on the skip! Over here in Arizona they just skip it on but never knock it down looks like a totally different texture when it's the difference of one step. A lot of homes they don't switch there strokes up, just pull from the bottom and work their way up the scaffold. I like your skip, it's much cleaner!

I was just talking about that with a friend! I've been looking at my house and watching these videos to figure out how to match the finish after I fill in a window. On my neighbor's house you can see the lines where they just keep going up. It's like a much thicker version of what Kirk just did here, almost like it was thrown on and walked away from. I'm wondering if I can throw on the scratch and brown coats and when my budget allows call someone out to match the finish or if I should just give it a whirl after some practice.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Howdy Isaac, thank you, with skip trowel finishes, there are about 20 to 30 different common variations, we matched a Taco Bell finish last year where we used the heaviest sand, and just applied it three to four time thicker, "really short and heavy strokes" then simply left it at that, we did not knock down as we match whatever finish folks wish. like anything in the trades It all takes a bit of practice. Cheers, live long and plaster giordano’s plaster images and teaching videos
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Howdy Drey Dude, my advice would be to apply the base coat, then give it a shot chances are you won't be able to match what you have, however some folks have odd talents they themselves are not aware of. Beside if you don't like it, you can scrape it off while still not fully cured go on Craigslist and find a plasterer who you can send them a picture of what you have they in turn can shoot you a cost to apply just the finish coat. I do this often where folks e-mail me what they have, I take it from there simply off a picture sent via email, easy peasy lemon squeezy. live long and plaster Giordano’s plastering images and teaching video’s

Howdy Journey Man dude, thank you If it were me I would install tile instead of painting. Paint will allow a shower pan or wall to gather mold fungus and spores because of the continuous moisture and wet conditions. Place garlic on your foot, wrap with plastic wrap, within an hour you will taste the garlic, same principal, the mold that will live and thrive on the shower pan, thus will seep into your skin transdermally. Dont skip with your health, besides the less time sick with not knowing why is better spent on the two hours or more installing the tiles. Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering

Evening Esteban, if the wall is porous such as the one in this video and just applied, you can texture over with no bonding agent or extra moister or water. If a wall is painted, yes, a bonding agent is necessary. If this wall were set for say, a day, yes, it would be necessary to hydrate or hose it down, so the texture would adhere. Howdy John, not really but that is a great question that's seams as natural a thing to do as white on rice, however if you wet this wall at this stage the mud will simply wash off "in some areas" thus the texture will be really off as a rule, you start with a wall, finish with a dry wall or have many different textures when it matters, after it painted this will show. Using base coat mud for a skip trowel finish takes a bit of practice as to how to place in on a wet wall VS a dry wall, all in the trowel, on edge or flatter so the mud does not fall off instead we push it onto a dry wall. live long and plaster Giordano’s plastering images and teaching video’s

Howdy folks, here some links if you wish to purchase any of the stucco tools we use fro our videos off amazon, BTW, these stucco trowels, Hawks, darbies, drills, Bosch bull dogs used for stucco removal plus stucco scoops, dash brushes, green floats, hard rubber floats and a whole lot more plastering and stucco tools are located with a click of the keyboard, get these delivered to your front door and Payless. When buying plastering trowels purchase the ones with a minimum width of 4 1/2 to 5 inches wide, these help to move plaster where you want it, any trowels between 3 to 4 inches wide are o.k. for concrete work but not recommended for a plasterer. The hawks we use are a bit more in cost as they are Magnesium and large 14x14, they hold much more stucco or plaster thus less spilling, you can buy cheaper hawks made from Aluminum but they tend warp a bit easier. They way past "contractors/fix'itmen" did some of the work for the part owners is quite wonky. Any help fully appreciated. Ah Kirk you would love being at the Outer Banks, North Carolina during hurricane season. I have been there for two and for one my wife and I climbed this wooden tower structure that is part of a restaurant overlooking the beach, this after we were kindly asked to leave the beach for our own safety. This particular experience was just the outer band of what we east coasters call a mild one, as far as hurricanes go:). Added note the tower did have lightning rods attached to it so it was so much more of an awesome experience of natures powers than a reckless thing to do. Re; Hose Armando, on the east coast the great majority of all houses made more than 40-50 years ago, like my rowhome or town house to be fancy, were built with brick then lathed and plastered, all the tall buildings in Baltimore built before the mid to late 1950s were made of cement and there are even some buildings near the waterfront and elsewhere made of brick and mortar from as far back as the U.S. civil war...you can google Baltimore city Shot Tower (or the Domino Sugar building for some examples. The Shot Tower is oddly shaped but aptly named such because during 1860s mass produced lead shot or bullets were cast from lead near the top and then let fall to stay formed in rounded shape for use in the rifles of the day...such as the Springfield model 1861 which was a musket type or rifled musket . The US Civil war era Springfield Armory building still stands strong and firm till this day. I have a friend from Springfield Mass. and had the chance to visit the site a few years back. Basically the building methods have changed due to cost , return on investment. I believe there are 5 grade/type of materials used) for modern structures that is a somewhat architectural standard dependent on area of US so it is mostly, nearly entirely due to economic factors as for why most homes made over last 30 years or more are made of wood frame, plywood sided and papered.There are some homes that have a brick veneer so non load bearing and much less expensive. In addition in the Outer Banks, due to the yearly hurricane season, homes are made of wood with many standing on wooden stilts. These homes were expected to take storm damage each year but there are some the have stood strong for a hundred years, those are easy to tell how well built they are as they were made for the wealthy and are the really large homes closest to the waterfront. All newer homes there, even the pink three story monsters that look all out of place to me are made of wood still but of cheaper materials with long board and even vinyl siding. Wow, I just built a wall of text but history in general is kind of my thing and I tend to get excited to share when folks ask about things I know a bit about. Peace fellas

Howdy Tony dude, Ann's husband, a knockdown dash is a thrown on or blown of stucco finish with a trowel lightly knocking down the high points, thus knock down dash, the finish in this video is a light skip trowel texture using the base coat cement plaster, to an average person they may appear similar, however a plasterer can easily see the difference. My average ratio of sand to cement plaster is 3 parts sand to one part cement plaster. Lastly, if you have a few more question ask here as other folks may have a similar question. Howdy Ann, I prefer the washed sand such as Felton or Olimpia myself. In our area most attach plywood or OSB wood to the studs as a cladding, I have not seen fiberboard used here. I would advise plywood sheathing for your exterior if you can afford it. We do indeed have a product called blue board gypsum based sheetrock here that is made specifically for interior use, the blue layer of coating is for veneer plaster to adhere to it, this board is not intended for exterior use. I appreciate the skill involved (art) and costs these days but shoot, too much for me. Was gonna attempt the rapid set base + finish with the base material. Sounds too risky with the timing of rapid set so will grab color (finish coat) bag. If it ends up looking like crap - wood trim around the door. HD sells "Set Control" by Rapid Set, which can extend the working time of their Rapid Set stucco patch. Look into it. On a few occasions I've used 1 packet per 50 lb bag of stucco patch and it gives me 30-40 mins of working time. Doing the work on a cool day in the shade will also help. You can do it the way you mentioned but the Rapid set stucco patch can be applied like a 1/8" thick finish coat and looks nearly identical to a La Habra 16-20 color coat when sponge floated. It's expensive for the coverage you get but very good stuff for patch work. Lastly you're 100% right, Kirk is the man! Hope your project comes out well.

My house has a thick skip trowel finish, so will do the base and practice skip trowel on my board before trying it on my wall. One thing I noticed when doing the breakout was that the finish coat on my wall didn't seem well "bonded" to the base coat. Like you can pull the finish coat in large "flakes". Idk maybe that's normal but would have thought the finish coat is almost fused to the base coat.

@@francoisl7663 Building a practice wall before tackling the real thing is a great idea! I suggested the rapid set stucco patch (red bag) as it's a product that you can easily use as a base and finish coat. The set control would help give you a similar working time to La Habra color coat. It's fairly sticky like a color coat too and you may find it easier to work with. As long as the skip trowel was done with medium or coarse sand (16-20 or 20-30) you should be able to make the stucco patch product blend. If you used a product like rapid set stucco mix in the yellow bag, which is meant to be used as a 1 coat base or a scratch + brown in a traditional 3 coat system, you may find it more difficult to work with for skip trowel . Trying to skip trowel with a base product isn't easy. Kirk is an absolute master and makes things look easier than they are. It's going to take you some practice but you seem determined. As for the color coat flaking. I see that often around areas with prolonged moisture exposure. It can also be application issues. It should be fairly bonded under normal circumstances. For full disclosure, I'm just starting out in this trade doing small patches. I'm still learning myself. Looking forward to hearing how things turn out for you.
