Some suggestions for your DIY Firebricks. I use to be Fitter in charge of BHP Refractory Port Kembla. They only have two types of refractories for there blast furnaces, one white mix and a grey mix. Both contain an aggregate about 10 mm in size, suggest trying scoria or pumice stone. The grey mix could take much higher temperatures, I suggest trying graphene in the mix. Both white and grey refractories had stainless fibers add in the mixing process for added strength and crack resistance. Note fiber lengths are a minimum of 32 times the diameter. When refractories were pored they appeared to plastic like in there ability to flow. So they most likely contain a small amount of some sort of polymer, silica fume (pozzolan). Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete has these additives and follows in the same manor. All refractory that was cast into a steel vessel had stainless steel refractory anchors welded to them.

I just received an new furnace and used the same stuff. I diluted it with about 40% water and used a cheap spray bottle. About the same size as yours and I used It seems to have soaked it real well. After 5 hours I can feel it hardening and able to form the edges where I want them with no loose fibers. i used about 20 Oz of mix and it soaked everything real good. I'll do another coat if necessary with the remainder of the bottle which will easily make the same amount(1 qt bottle), but I think it is going to be more than enough the way it has hardened already and still feel very wet.

You want the soft air layer for insulation it is y it you pack the wool down it will burn up faster .rigidiser just keeps you from breathing in the fibers . If u want a better coat I allwase USA rigidiser then itc coating after I have a firm base to apply it to .I only use rigidiser on my fourge but I use both on my foundry's

Bro the best way I know to get the backside is to pull it out and spray it really well and put it back in and then spray the inside of it. But honestly you did great

Have you ever had a problem with leftover rigidizer hardening in the original bottle?

How rigid does it get? Would a piece of rigidized blanket, work as a deck for a kiln shelf?

How do you secure the ceramic wool to the inside of the lid?

Does the metal on outside of furnace get hot to touch?
