Thank you so much for this video!!! I'm a junior majoring in English at the University of Washington and decided I was interested in grad school during my sophomore year at my university, and your video helped me understand a LOT more about this. I am primarily interested in Literature rather than Comp & Rhetoric as far as English grad programs go, but this was extremely helpful. I'm really excited about applying to grad school even if I'm legitimately terrified about it. Thank you so much!

I've had a very similar experience. All my professors said to only go for schools that would fully fund me. Was definitely an important factor :) But thankfully it seemed that most PhD programs in physics fully fund students (at least the ones I looked at, and I applied to 10!). And Fall my senior year was HECTIC as heck, especially since it was my last semester. It was nice to hear about your experience. Good video!

Thanks for your videos! I’m a junior English major thinking about graduate school so these are very helpful :) I’d love to hear about 1) what it’s like to be a woman in graduate school and 2) how you fostered relationships with your professors during undergrad so that you could secure good letters of recommendation

Thank you for this video! I’m currently about to start my junior year of undergrad and like you, I’ve been thinking a about grad school as the next step for me after undergrad. Although I plan to apply for sociology programs I think your advice is pretty standard for most grad programs:) I’m starting the process to begin looking in to schools that look like a good fit for me and it’s exciting but also scary haha. I’m using this time to build up my cv/ relationships with my professors I plan to ask for LOR. Did you have any research experience/ other kinds of experience before applying to your joint program? Also how far in advance did you start studying for your gre? Thank you!

meagan brooke I’m glad you found this video helpful! :) that all sounds like an excellent plan! the only real experience I had outside of coursework was my independent study and some involvement with a few different clubs and organizations that weren’t related to English necessarily but were still meaningful to me personally. I didn’t do any research. And I started studying for the GRE about 2 months in advance. I used Magoosh; it’s a little pricey but so worth it!

Kind of sad that I'm only just now seeing this, as my first graduate school application is due tomorrow 😞But, better late than never! The one thing I'm slightly worried about is that the writing sample I'm submitting is in Medieval Literature, but I plan to study Renaissance. I should have submitted something closer to my interests, but I didn't really have any writing in that field, but I'm hoping that since I'm only applying to MA programs they will be fine with it.

Currently looking into a post-bacc English Education program. What exactly did you do in terms of funding? Are there any resources that you personally recommend about grants / scholarships, specifically for English programs? There’s a lot of information online, but I don’t know what can be considered as credible.

Were you published before you were accepted? I'm thinking of applying to grad school and since most are waiving the GRE due to corona, my professors have told me they're looking a bit more at student research and writing samples.

Hey! I am a post graduate student and holds 1 year of work experience as a content writer. I am planning to study abroad for courses like creative writing and new media communication. I was wondering would you be able to help me with the idea of how difficult it is to get the job? Though I am considering Ph.D as my end goal but to have a little bit of more hope doing a masters would give edge to my CV is what I have considered by my research. Any advice that you can provide as in the job oppurtunities? I know this is a lot to ask in one go. But let me know if you can provide any information about this.

Would/could you please address the issue of mediocre scores and not a stellar CV? And how much a writing sample would factor in in that case?
@SarahFischerVlogs
@SarahFischerVlogs 3 жыл бұрын
Debarati Choudhury hi! Thanks for watching! I plan to make a Q&A video about grad school in the future. For now, I can say that I personally had very mediocre GRE scores and a very average CV. For those reasons, I tried to make my personal statement and writing sample stand out as much as possible! Do not worry about GRE scores too much-more and more schools are doing away with the testing requirement. You shouldn’t let mediocre scores/an average CV stop from applying anywhere. The places I thought I’d get rejected to accepted me, and the places I thought I’d for sure get into didn’t let me in!

@@ananyatiwari1695 There are so many job opportunities--I would say that most folks stay in academia (teaching, running a writing program/center, etc.). But some go on to work in publishing, in marketing, as free lance editors, etc.! As for funding, many PhD programs offer stipends for teaching beginning level courses or being a TA. I talk more about this in my FAQ video about being a PhD student at IU :)
