APPLYING TO VET SCHOOL WITH A LOW GPA // Hello everyone, welcome back to my channel! Today is the second video of my VMCAS series where I am explaining what to do if you want to apply to veterinary school BUT have a low GPA and how your VMCAS application will STILL stand out. I go over Post-Bacc programs as well as Special Masters Programs one may consider before vet school and things a pre-vet applicant can do to strengthen their application if they have a low GPA and do not want extra schooling regarding their animal experience, extracurriculars, research, and more. You can still get accepted into vet school with a low GPA, never lose hope in that! I lastly reveal what next week’s topics will be all about so stay tuned!

My issue is my undergrad cumulative is within the required range but my vmcas gpa is below the requirement. Do you think it would be better to do a post-bacc or masters to overcome this? From the video, it sounds like masters would hinder me from surpassing this issue right?

I have around 1200 hours of large, small, exotic and small ruminant hours and about 150 clinic hours that I’m still still working on. I’m just afraid because my GPA is low (around 2.7 GPA). I’ve had to work to maintain my household and the vet I shadow under is very confident in my skills that she allows me to do. I’m just so afraid sometimes.

Hello 👋🏾 I'm in the same boat as you. I graduated my undergrad with a 2.71 GPA (because I had a rough year during my junior year). I was rejected by all the schools I applied to but one wanted to interview me and they told me that all I need to do is take 3 more science classes and it should raise my GPA up. I have the same amount of animal experience & outside experiences as you, but the veterinarians at the clinic I work at are not really "mentoring" in a way, so I'm trying to find mentors. What's your update? Have you gotten into vet school yet? I hope you did 😊

@@camryn6615are you retaking or taking more science classes and then reapplying? I have a 3.0 but I do not wanna do a whole post bacc program that is 30k 😭

thank you for this video, I started getting experience about 3-4 years ago in the veterinary field and due to personal and family situations my GPA took a toll. A few days ago I got an admissions interview to ross! 3 weeks away and im super nervous but after my hardships, this was the first step in the right direction

Thank you SO much! Yes- I think many students feel like if they have a 4.0 GPA, they are automatically safe and it is SO much more to it!

I never even considered some schools might not accept community college credit! Holy cow. I think you just helped me decide to go straight to university instead of going to community college first.

I'm so happy my video at least gives you a new perspective! Transferring credits is definitely the biggest headache when going from a community college to a university, even though it's a better choice financially- it can sometimes be a headache! So just keep that in mind. Thank you so much for watching!

You can also go back to school and become a vet tech. This can increase GPA and get you valuable experience performing clinical skills a volunteer could not perform. In the vet tech program, you will also work with large animals (food and farm) and small companion animals as part of the schooling. You can also work out an externship with your local zoo for clinical skills. In Florida, White Oak gives you opportunities to work in conservation externships or in vet tech internship with animals such as Okapis. The program also incorporates some of the classes needed to get into vet school such as general chem 1 and 2 and all biology classes and as electives you can take organic chem, physics, and genetics.

YES- that is also an amazing alternative way into vet school as well! I actually have some classmates that were a vet tech first. But WOW what an awesome freaking program in Florida! Thank you for giving that resource for others ❤

Would you be willing to do a video on how to pick the best CVM schools? Specifically what to look for; I.e. the different academic aspects that set them apart, if they have a high percentage of students that pass the NAVLE, or anything else that’s important.

I just got a denial letter from Ross today and I was so upset. I feel behind because I’m almost 28 but I changed from pre med to pre vet a year ago and definitely need more experience and better grades

When considering taking courses post graduation in an attempt to raise GPA, do you recommend doing retakes of courses you did poorly in or taking new classes that you are sure you will do good in? I am unsure which will give my GPA more of a boost...

My passion for veterinary medicine hasn't changed however, my undergraduate GPA took a toll on me. I wasn't sure if I should go into a Masters program or post bac at first but I don't want to get into the Masters because I don't have the desire for those programs. I'm just unsure on how to go about applying for a post bacc program and want to avoid making the mistake of choosing the wrong school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I completely understand that! I didn’t have a desire to go into those programs either. But do you have an advisor you could talk to and walk you through the post-bacc process? You could also go back and retake classes at a community college to boost your GPA too I believe. Let me know if this helps!

I was wondering if having 3 years of experience (from working at a vet clinic) would help me since my GPA is around 3.1? Like does having a lot of experience look good when the gpa is lacking?

Hi my friend just sent me a reel of you and ig I just followed you. I’m in my second year at a community college majoring in biology and I’m struggling my gpa haven’t been good since I started but I have my mind set on becoming a vet do you have any advice Ik I’m in the early stages so I can turn things around I plan to use your channel to state me in the right direction I have vet assistant certificate but I have started working as one yet bcz I don’t drive and the bus system where I live sucks so I wanted to wait until I get my license which is right around the corner

Hi Lindsey, I graduated from college last spring, with a degree in Environmental Resource Management. During my time at college I didn't enjoy what I was studying but still continued to obtain the degree, because of this I didn't really try my hardest and my gpa ended up being very very poor. I have been thinking about going back to school to obtain a degree in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Penn State (basically a pre-vet degree) and then going to vet school. I was curious of your opinion about whether a vet-school would deny me because of my gpa for a previously obtained degree or if they would focus on the pre-vet schooling?

Hello Zach! Since your pre-vet degree would have most if not all the pre-reqs for veterinary medicine, I would assume that that’s the degree they would focus on! They also take into account your science GPA as well, so that doesn’t include overall courses. But I would definitely check this with a advisor first to be sure. Yes! Basically just diversifying your experiences, adding “non-vet med” related extracurriculars that makes it seem like your life doesn’t surround you and vet school and showing more of your personality (fun hobbies, religious activities, etc.)

What are my options if I had a cumulative 2.8 GPA for undergrad and my major was film? I had a change of heart for careers and now work at a veterinary hospital as a tech (unlicensed). Will this help me at all? Do I have a chance?

I would definitely go back and re-take classes because they WILL prioritize grades over experience unfortunately. BUT your experience will help you and your major being film will set you apart and show some of your personality. My advice would be to add to that experience in small animal with getting large animal hours (you can even volunteer at horse barns like I did, or shadow a large animal vet), and maybe even exotic animal experience if you can.

Hello I graduated from diploma marketing i got 2.11 GPA unfortunately because i wasn’t interested in marketing , but im so passionate about vet and becoming veterinary but they wont accept me because of my gpa what to do? i mean im genuinely willing to do anything just be accepted.

I would definitely see if you can do a post-bacc program and complete the pre-reqs to increase your GPA! Your priority would need to be grades first and experience second, I hope this helps!
