Isn’t the way of writing the exchange rate wrong. As far as I have learned it a direct quotation from AUD in USD is AUD/USD = 0.8 means that you have to pay 0.8 AUD to get 1 USD. Which would make the example reversed. The AUD is appreciating as you can buy 1 USD with less AUD.

Are you sure about this? I would say that the AUD has appreciated against the USD because you need can buy more with less, hence the value of the AUD appreciated gaisnt the USD

Hi. I suspect that you may have misunderstood the uploader. AUD/USD- Fixed/floating- 1/0.8 change to 1/0.5 - basically concentrate on the right side (quote currency). It has reduced in number, i.e. it has appreciated/value increased. Work off the right side. Makes life easier. If right side goes up= depreciation, if it goes down= appreciation. Left side will just be the opposite of the right. Hope this helped :)
