April 16, 2019....30 will attempt to become apprentice Ironworkers, just 12 will make it. Here is a video of that day. 12 careers were begun, most of the others will return and try again.

As a journeyman ironworker everything makes sense except for the rebar relay race. If you want apprentices running around twisting ankles I guess that’s good for your local. I understand it but wtf.

As a Ironworker from local 416 we run alot because sometimes we get bad bids on jobs and we have to put an X amount of weight in each shift. If we do not reach these goals the company looses its ass off.

@@adminadmin9997 you are the ones who are giving away all the conditions that past brothers have worked so hard to get running on a Rebar mat with weight on your shoulder is stupid if you have to run because of a "bad bid" sounds to me like you need a competent estimator how much will the company lose on comp cases for breaking 1 too many backs?
@adminadmin9997
@adminadmin9997 3 жыл бұрын
@@roscoep.coltraine6344 since I been in i been told. Its tradition to challenge each other and push your brother to see who can get the most weight in at the end of the day. Bids are bids, you have 1 company that says they can do the job $X amount then another company says they can do it for even cheaper then price for the job it just keeps going down and down in price to the point it fucked the workers, it benifits the contractor and in a sense if we want a job we gotta hustle. They say local 416 members get paid a high wage for it's hard working heavy hitters. We protect are high wage by getting in a shit load of weight. You look at a Non Union iron worker vs a union iron worker the union man runs faster, grabs more bar is more skilled in building wall elements, core elements, stressing cable etc. Its fucked up I know how we run and carry alot of weight. It is critical we have an edge on the non union rod busters. So are hustle is what we got. I had my 1st surgery as a 1st period apprentice. Nothing changed when I came back everyone still running and packing a shit load of bar on there shoulder. I would like to see the iron workers union unite and fight back for are conditions we did in fact give up. It's a disgrace I know not proud of it.

How do you pick your specialty within the Ironworkers? I obtained welding certs in college and was recently accepted into a Ironworkers local as an apprentice. I was hoping I could land a job welding, I just don’t know how it works. I know I need to learn all areas of the trade, but would like to focus on the structural welding portion, since that’s what I went to college for.

You technically will be welding regardless. It's not like the pipe trades, where welders just weld pipe, and does not fit (which you can market yourself as just that, but most welders learn how to fit for job security).

@@OVERCAPITALIZE that can also depend on how big the company is sometimes. I've been with smaller outfits where you do everything. Welding, decking, bolt up, raising gang etc. And now the company I'm with that's pretty big they have their own groups and foremans for each group. A decking crew, a welding crew, bolt up crew etc. If anyone needs help then they borrow someone from another crew for a couple days if that or maybe trade out a guy here or there. But generally the welders out of anyone stay burning that wire.

Fuck.. I’ve been doing rebar in bc for three and a half years . I worked until I was 7 months pregnant , gave birth, and came back 2 months post partum. I make more money than the journeymen that I work with who have 7-12 years on me.13 dollars in raises With 3 years work experience . I work harder than most of the guys I’ve worked with and I owe that to some of the best ironworkers in the trade guiding me in the right direction. I’ve cried tears of pain while being conditioned to the trade and I’ve cried tears of frustration for being too hard on myself for not being able to understand certain concepts right off the bat.. but never once did I give up.. there were days where I walked off crying and feeling like a failure for leaving .. to come back the next day ready to give it another shot .. and because I’m in a mans trade , to prove myself I need to tie faster, pack heavy, work faster, and learned how to grow a backbone and stand up for myself . I came into Rebar not even knowing what the trade was , I was kind of a lost little girl.. I’ve definitely transformed and I wasn’t given no free ride . I love rebar. For the first time ever I finally feel like I fit in . And no I’m not a drug addict and I don’t drink. They literally call me Kim boy cause they say I’m one of the boys. I overhear some of the most fucked up guy talk and it doesn’t offend me .. Fuck .. I think I might be more crude than a lot of the guys .. maybe it surprises them cause I’m 120 pounds soaking wet and a pretty face .. lmao .. I get what your saying and I’m not one of “those girls” but there are a handful of good women rodbusters.. don’t shoot us all down .

hate to say it, biologically speaking, most of the women in trades rely on men to help them, even a physically strong women is not as able as a avg male worker. Im sure the women in these locals work hard, and are good people and workers but those are the facts. Any job you go to regardless if its physical labor they give the women lighter jobs, because they know the women for the most part are not able. But like all physical work the men and women bodies adapt. The thing is they have seperate standards, for women during the physical tranning part, after people put in applications. I just did physical test for iron worker union in nyc, two weeks ago. We had 300 people for applications, only 100 make it through to interviews, and their are only 25 spots. They had use doing, drills running around cones, with 60 pound bags, and 200 pound wheel barrows, push ups, situps, ladder climbing. It was crazy guys yelling and screaming, while some old timer with 40 years in the unions saying this a great life changing job, as guys are sturggling to do their last push ups. We had people struggling alot on the wheel, barrow they made you bring up and down a ramp and around cones, and timed ya. The best 100 scores moved on, be it man or women. There was one women killing it, and was in the top 50 so, their are some able and willing women.
