@@ArkefthosBonsai Same on mine, canopy looks really good and is actively growing, below the graft there were already some new buds forming that have now become small branches. Lets hope we can both manage to air layer that "difficult to air layer" tree species. Good signs for your Carpinus as well. Beautiful species to work with, really strong root systems and amazing back budding. I'm having really fun with these trees. I will do a video about airlayer aftercare this autumn! Thank you!

That is why I pruned a lot of the foliage. This will direct energy to the graft. Definately not time to prune everything above the graft. This would be too drastic and might lead to everything dying. Plus, I would like the top part to thicken the base of the tree more, this season and maybe the next. And will be removed when the graft is established and developed, maybe autumn 2024. Thank you Alex! Everything you said is correct. It is sylvestris on sylvestris, the scion is the dwarf variety "Watereri", which grows great in my garden. Though it might make sense, even if I grafted with sylvestris the species and not a dwarf, grafting low is a nice way to save a big trunk that is much overgrown to become a bonsai. Generally a very usifull technique! Cheers!

This is not an experiment. I did not invent it. This is a proper, applied technique, for probably handreds of years. It is actually very successful given the correct amount of time. There is no doubt about that. 9 months ago I uploaded a video of styling a Japanese black pine. On this tree the first branch on the left is grafted and the second branch (on the back) is approach grafted with this technique, back in 2015. Cheers!

This paste does not prevent any healing or callusing from happening. While the callus forms the paste stretches, a lot. In extreme callusing it becomes thin as a plastic bag and transparent. But in any case, next year this part will be removed and won't be in the finished tree. The paste is there inky to keep the scion from drying the next two weeks...
