It is CHOC’s mission to support children and teens with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, and their families, improving early detection and facilitating effective treatment.
CHOC offers comprehensive child and family support through psychosocial, emotional, and practical support as we augment the different medical fraternities.
Every time a child is diagnosed with cancer it is a life-changing journey for the families
Childhood cancer is not preventable, but it is curable.
Since 2011 CHOC has been training Healthcare Professionals, Healthcare Workers, Traditional Health Practitioners and communities in KZN - one of the 9 provinces in SA. We have done several roadshows that includes mall drives, training, radio talks, etc. however we believe that the paediatricians and doctors in KZN need to be aware not only of the EWS but also of the challenges and obstacles to early diagnosis. Today we will unpack those challenges and I believe that the learning can be applied successfully - not only in KZN but also in other parts of the country and globally.
Since 2011 we reached 8910 people working in health. We also worked in all the 11 district and trained the TOT at the RTC of the KZN DOH. We worked in 69 towns. In the beginning of Nov we spend a week in Richards Bay and trained xxxx Healthcare professionals and healthcare workers. All of these will mean nothing without the cooperation of the doctors and the correct referral pathways.
Since 2008 and especially since 2017 there has been a significant increase in new diagnosis to the POU at IALCH and Greys. However we still have a long way to go to reach the 60% survival rate which is the goal of the WHO GICC
