This was a great watch. I feel like after a few years with groove box’s I evolved a format similar to this. Minimize equipment and maximize control of your machine. I learned from this vid. To think of parts in mute groups is a great idea. Good stuff thank you for taking the time to put something out like this.

Some very good points here, having the song structure automated can be great as it alleviates some pressure, but again depends on what you’re going for.. if you’re playing a club you might want to jam on a part of a song for an extended amount of time in which case you need the control. Using an external synth like the Microfreak or minilogueXD that have a “knob per function” approach is great so you can actively change parameters on the fly without having to change channel selections on your main sequencer (say OPZ or Digitakt) but also the improvisation side is invaluable. Thanks for everything you do for the community ❤️

Thank you for your excellent insights. I know what it's like having performance nerves- but the need for expression and creativity is stronger and I feel that nerves make for a better performance (as long as you understand that feeling nervous is entirely normal and that many pro level performers feel nerves before every performance, though they can hide them).

It's so great to hear someone who gets it. Some fantastic structural and compositional ideas for live performance here. Live performance can be so nerve-racking, especially when people come up to you *during your performance* and just start talking to you like you're DJing. (lol) I use a Deluge and Machine+ (with a Hapax on the way) for live performance of psytrance, which as a music style is always rapidly changing, so being super-prepared and rehearsed is key. Again, so refreshing to hear from someone who keenly understands how hard this stuff is to pull off. Thanks Jeremy.

It’s the best. You can run/sequence a huge synth setup with it in the center as a drum machine. Or a small setup. Just stick to it, as it is challenging in the beginning, but then it reveals it’s true power. I almost sold it, now I’m so glad I didn’t. One day it just klicked.

I’m really getting used to making music this way in studio, but definitely still figuring out how the heck to do it live, especially cuz I’m a singer also, which…makes it a bit trickier to manage. Maybe I should just 100% sequence my backing tracks in Live’s arrangement mode and just hit play 😅

For live sets I ended up producing tracks in Ableton and then using the audio with the octatrack while making the beat on the digitakt and adding the analog 4 to switch between synth lines/basses and making transitions interesting. That way you can mangle your sound the way you feel like in the moment and mute/play with effects/get into the parameters on the A4 for build ups, breaks and releases. You can even carry your gear around in a backpack because it is so reduced :)
