(LINKS BELOW): WARNING: avoid the Angelbird CF Express card I show in this video. Read on to find out why. After a few months with my Z9, I’ll walk you through some things that really impress me about the camera as well some things that bug me about it. After that I’ll share some favorite accessories I’ve found to use with it.
ANGELBIRD WARNING: One of the accessories I mention is a really low priced card from Angelbird. Since recording this, I’ve had a few odd issues where the card wouldn’t import files unless I used copy and paste commands, then a close friend told me his started crashing both his Mac and PC if he plugged it in. He has used it beyond the return period and Angelbird told him his only recourse was to deal with the original seller. I urge you to avoid them. You get what you pay for. ProGrade is incredibly supportive of their customers. I highly recommend their Cobalt cards for maximum Z9 performance.

great video. You're the only one I'm aware of that's made an "accessories for the Z9" video - and it was needed. I have to admit that I agree with you - once I can afford the Z9 this fall - I'll be sorry to see no delay for the shutter release. (maybe there will be a firmware update by then?). Anyway - thanks for doing this Hudson - it's something that was needed.

Just love your videos... They have helped me out so much with understandings the settings better on my Z9... Got my Z9 a month or so ago... Upgraded from the Z6... Love it... The drive mode not included in the custom settings... Is a bummer for me as well... Agree with you 100% on an extensive settings bank... They should have it...

Hudson, I am binge watching all of your Z9 videos, plan on switching from my D850’s in the next couple weeks to a z9 & a z6ii per your recommendation. I see there is going to be a learning curve switching to mirrorless, but your wonderful videos are going me a basic understanding prior to getting the cameras in my hand…..thank you! Jim

I have some Pocket Wizard111, that I mount on the hot shoe, that I have used in the past with other cameras, I use the 10 pin connector straight to the receiver, and carry another as a sender, on a hand strap or in my pocket, I don't need to worry about weight, just recycling my kits.....love my Z9 and ALL of your tips!

Excellent video as usual... I agree about the banks. There is no way to change settings quickly. I find this really limits using bank settings. Still a brilliant camera.

Love that the MH-33 charger is also USB-C. So you can throw your second battery in you bag on the charger attached the the anker brick while you shoot the full batt. So with 2 batteries you never need down time :P

I really like Kirk Z9 L-bracket as well. Really well made products, and great service! I did buy the replacement foot for the 100-400/70-200 lenses, but strangely enough, it didn’t fit on BOTH lenses. The tolerance was a little too tight no matter ho hard I tried, and I didn’t want to scratch the paint on my 70-200mm lens. I decided to return it. I have the Nikon wireless remote, and I really like it. The only problem is that it only has 3 channels, and I have run into problems where I was triggering someone’s Z7 who was using the same channel.

excellent video and good to see an accessories review. I'd definitely NOT recommend a ProGrade card after I had an issue and Prograde support wouldn't deal with it - they got card and reader back. I guess we all have differing experiences with any product, But no support is a killer. Office Hours are great! Looking fwd to the next one, We learn so much! Thanks to all involved 🙏👍 PS I also have that SmallRig plate - its brilliant

You can also use the RRS “BMBD18” plate for the D850 (with battery grip). The L-bracket doesn’t work, but the base plate fits perfectly. I already owned it so avoided buying a new base plate.

Terrific Video... I am more landscape and still life... I think i will wait until Nikon brings back the delayed timer on their flagship. Esp in low light, it just one less cord to juggle or button to find in bag or pocket. Hudson, you spoke about an app to control shutter speed and/or aperture on the iPhone. I thought I heard you say "lightroom".

My previous Nikon cameras were a D700 & a Z6 that's away being converted to full spectrum with a clip-in 720nm filter - the Z6 didn't work with SnapBridge with U1-3 & the memory banks on the Z9 DO need to be unified with the ability to save in-camera. I bought a CFX/XQD USB C reader off Amazon here in the UK. I'm waiting for 3 Legged Thing to produce a dedicated L bracket but do have a Peak Design RC2/A S plate & Slide Strap. My Z9 firmware wishlist also includes increasing the Fn4 custom list & the ability to select locking out the portrait mode buttons when the camera is in landscape orientation.

Hudson, I too agree that Kirk's Z9 L-bracket is much sturdier without the flex and vibrations seen in the inferior SmallRig design. I have both brackets but am now waiting on Really Right Stuff's bracket (their first shipments won't happen for another month or so) because unfortunately Kirk neglected to design a curve/loop into the front of their side bracket and their bracket blocks access to the Z9's focus mode button on the front of the camera. I do love the Kirk L-bracket on my battery-gripped Z7ii which is also very robust and solid. Thanks for your great reviews and recommendations.

I've got the Kirk L bracket for the Z9 and it does really restrict access to the focus mode button. Doable with a bare hand but not with a glove. I'm going to look into customizing a different button.

Great presentation. May I add that I have the SmallRig L-Bracket for Nikon Z 9 3714, and I have no issues with wobbling. I believe you removed the D-Ring WITH the plastic cover. The D-Ring with cover is meant to fit in the vertical portion special machined groove.

Thanks for the update, always interesting. I have the smallrig bracket for the Z9 and I find that when you stick the metal triangle that attaches the strap to the body in the notch that's there in the bracket, there's no play in portrait mode. Maybe yours is slightly different, but mine works well in both orientations.

Those strap lugs are the first thing I remove out of the box. :) I don't want anything bouncing around attached to my cameras. Huge peeve of mine. I didn't think it would be an issue when I felt it initially, but doing long exposure work over the past month, it's a deal breaker for me. It adds a lot of vibration in any wind or from touching the body mounted vertical. The Kirk is rock solid and adds that oh so awesome QD port. :)

Henk, I have the same experience with that triangular strap loop acting as a touch point/stabilizer for portrait mode. It’s obvious the bracket was designed specifically to work with that post/strap connector. I never use those either & have removed the one on the opposite side.

@@DavidDowns61 Yeah, that's what I suspected. It's a very stable platform for me in both orientations. It was also very affordable compared to other brackets I had in the past.

I agree, very stable with the strap loop in place- and of course the loop is locked as a consequence.

I was about to post the same thing. Having the triangular split ring installed seems to be key for stability with this design. I just got mine in the mail today and heading out to Big Bend next week for some Milky Way shots. I'll report back with any issues. Still waiting on my RRS l-bracket...and may end up canceling my order if this Small Rig bracket works.

Great Video. Tx Henry. Just a short tip on the Smallrig L-Bracket. It has a dedicated space for the eyelet (for the camera strap). The eyelet fits perfectly in there and prevents the l-bracket from any bending. Its really stable then. I have just noticed that you did remove the eyelets on your Z9 - thats why this didn't work for you. Cheers Tobi

I don't ever leave those loose items attached to my camera and I never will. First thing off and into the trash. The L-bracket should fit tight and not flex without wedging a tiny triangular keychain between the body and it. That's just silly. :-) Try the Kirk. Rock solid and adds a QD port to boot. First name is Hudson, but no big deal.

I have the RRS L-bracket which I bought at the same time as the Z9 back in April (2023). It fits perfectly and seems rock-solid. I agree that the guy who had one that didn't fit either got the wrong product, perhaps mis-packaged, or maybe RRS had a design flaw early on. My one issue with it is it does not allow easy access to the upper covered ports (like the USB port). This L-bracket has a sliding vertical rail that can be loosened and slid away from the body to allow access to those ports without having to remove the entire vertical rail portion of the bracket. At the time I bought the RRS L-bracket, I didn’t know your opinion on that brand and was a bit of an RRS loyalist. I know and understand your opinion now, but I’m not sure if I’ll switch to the Kirk L-bracket since what I already have seems to work fine for me.

@@gosman949 I use a browser extension to monitor stock when I want something that's hard to get. It wasn't too difficult to obtain one using that method. If you're just randomly going to a site and refreshing on the off chance you'll get lucky, that probably has worse odds than Vegas.

For the Z9 what SD card do you recommend for slot 2 to go along with the ProGrade Digital 165GB CFexpress 2.0 Type B Cobalt Memory Card as I use the slot 2 as a back up. It saved my Iceland shoot having backup instead of overflow. Thanks, you are a great teacher. Also, I'll be in Portland in a few weeks.

Kirk makes an l-bracket specifically for the Z9. I pre-ordered one from B&H on 02/14/2022. Still on back order.

Great video Hudson! The scenario you describe with wanting to swtich banks to shoot a bird (while shooting landscape) @11:20 and the impractical aspect of flipping banks, wouldn't "Recall shooting function" do the trick?

I think I was riding my motorcycle in that same sandstorm. The stretch from Barstow to the Tehachapi grade was just insane, with big rigs blowing almost completely out of the lane and onto the shoulder. It must have been even more amusing, trying to photograph in those conditions. Mother Nature reminding everyone who’s boss.

Agree 100% on the exposure delay mode. I've been using a 10-pin, but they need to return that setting! I recently bought an Angelbird 1TB card with sustained write speed of 1400... and I hope it holds up!! For an L-bracket, I went with ProMediaGear - they have two models. I chose the one with a cold shoe mount, because I often mount my NinjaV and a mic. PMG also has the QD port built in. It's good to have options, and by the end of this year we should have a lot more to choose from!

hello Hudson, I to love the Z9 but yes where is the "Exposure Delay" I hope if we all ask Nikon they bring it back in a firmware update. I switch to Kase filter to they seem very good. Great set of accessories. Keep weep, keep safe. and enjoy life.

Hudson, if you have a RRS L bracket from D3s days, it fits the Z9. With a very minor filing of a small area it allows the battery to be removed as well. The very front upper edge of the battery door requires an easy touch up on the L bracket.

Amazing. Thanks! As for the Vello remote, I have one as well and it’s (mostly) great for me. I use it on on Z9 as well as my 850. However, it seems to lose connection frequently causing me to push that little button on the receiver to reconnect. Also, when taking burst photos, sometimes it gets stuck “focusing” and won’t release the camera controls until you push the remote button again. Have you experienced any of this? If so, have you found a work around?

I actually have not tried that! But I will. The reason I haven’t is because it seems some other people are experiencing this issue based on Amazon reviews. I’ll give it a go though ;)

Hi! Can you say if the Z9 charges while it’s on like the Z6ii? For me it’s a must have feature, and I saw everyone just talking about the charging capacity while it’s off

Is it true that you can compare mA to mA on battery banks vs camera batteries? I thought one had to compare watt-hr, which includes the voltage and the time of use. Seems unlikely that battery bank will charge the camera battery 6 times just based on the physical size of the two. Not sure, what are your thoughts?

Ha you're right Karl. I stand corrected and better informed thanks! The Times wirecutter had this fabulous article for the curious: www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/blog/watts-in-a-name-why-were-using-watt-hours-to-compare-batteries/ The end result is the Z9 battery is 36 watt hours and the Anker 20000 PD brick is 72 watt hours. It will charge you full twice using usb-c PD to either the camera body or the z9's battery charger and costs a bit more than a quarter of a single z9 spare battery. :) It's not 6 charges, but it's a great deal still.

Wondering why you would not hang on to the Z7ii as backup to the Z9. Is the lower resolution sensor with the Z6ii not limiting?

No I find it empowering in low lit handheld situations. I can always capture a pano if I need more resolution. I personally wish with the Z9 had the low light chops and my smaller camera had the landscape power. They are reversed to my mind. The poor high ISO performance is more limiting in action shooting scenarios with longer slower lenses and action freezing shutter speeds. That's why Sony's A9 and the Nikon D5/6 are lower megapixel. The Z9 is the best landscape and night camera I've ever used. The Z6ii is the best low light camera bar none. Great for my 4k video and timelapse needs too. I have zero need for 8k.

I just use the Bluetooth remote shutter; it's worked perfectly for me so far, I never have to worry about forgetting or attaching anything, and it's *free*.

Yeah, it works fine, but it is far, far more hassle to use the phone's slick screen and keep it actively ready than to have a little tactile button in your pocket. Well worth the 75 bucks for me. :-)

Amazing low light camera? The D4s through to the D6 smoke it in ISOs over 1600. And yes I own a Z9. Great review tho. The play/review button needs a little knob on it though so you can review within the viewfinder on the fly.

Great video. Maybe you mentioned it, but which Luma quick release plate do you have with the Z9, because your link takes me to their page that has three, including the Offset Mid and the Full? Also, want to make sure that these luma plates are compatible with Arca-Swiss heads?

The full is great for the Z9 and yes, of course they're arca compatible, but I mostly use Kirk's L-bracket with the QD these days.

I've been using the AngelBird 512GB SE cards in my Z9 since it arrived. They've been flawless. There was a FW update to make them more compatible with some cameras, but out of the box they work great with the Z9. The fact that they even support a FW upgrade to increase compatibility for me shows they are standing by their products better than other card manufacturers. I've had no problems with ProGrade in the past, although the gold cards don't even meet the speeds they now give for sustained write so I've switched to Angelbird as they appear to do exactly what they quote. Have to agree on the banks though. Such a fiddle having to switch over, so I just don't use them.

Be careful. I know several people now with angelbird issues including myself. Customer support has been abysmal in all cases. Slow and unsupportive. They blame all issues on the card reader unless you are using their own and will only offer to sell you a reader instead of replacing faulty cards. ProGrade and will issue an rma right away if you have an issue and their Cobalt cards are faster and flawless. I stand by my angelfire caveat emptor. I'm done with them.

First name is Hudson. No big deal. I have a friend whose card crashes every mac and PC it is plugged into and mine has gone wonky and won't import images. You also can't drag them out of the folder. I can only move files by copying and pasting into another folder. Angelbird blames using anyone else's card reader for the issue and refuses to RMA the cards. They want you to buy their reader. Caveat Emptor. That lack of customer focus itself is a huge red flag.

On using filters, what exactly is the magnetic ring called to insert into the hood. How does the lens hood fit the other lens being their different sizes. Thank you.

The hood mounts to the bayonet grooves on the lens exterior, not the filter threads. It fits perfectly on all the lenses I've listed. I've sold hundreds of these filters and never once had a return. :) You won't go back. A thin magnetic ring that comes with the kit threads right into the hood's 112 filter threads. That ring has spanner wrench like cutouts every 90 degrees on its outer face to make removal a breeze if necessary. I've never removed mine since installing it. Once it's in the three hood, click... You can snap up to 3 stacked 112s in there magnetically with zero fear of vignetting. The quality and durability of the glass is astounding. It's really a dream system.

Please could you let me know what type of cables are are using to charge battery. I have a Anker power pack but it doesn't seem charge the battery so I am assuming I need a different cable.

You need an Anker PD capable battery like the one linked in this video. If it says PD, and you use it's included USB-C cable, you're good. Of course if you use an older battery for the D5 it will not work. It has to be the new battery released with the Z9.

Hi , I have a big problem, I have a Nikon Z9 and I am waiting for a Nikon 200-600 lens. too long. That's why I decided to buy a Sony 200-600 with a Megadap ETZ 21 adapter. I just don't understand why Nikon doesn't have remote control shutter release built into their cameras. Heck my old Pentax K3 has it, which was invaluable during the Sun eclipse a few years back!

The iOptron is fine with the Z9 plus the 58 .95 Noct! The MSM is fine with the Z9 and 14-24 max. I prefer the 20mm 1.8 with it on the MSM though.

My Pixel 5 does that fine via snapbridge or other apps too. The remote is much simpler and quicker. Especially for night work and panos. The phone is a hassle and a handful.

FYI, no issues with angelbird customer support here. I've heard other grumblings of their customer suppoert being bad- so I'm not sure if they fixed the issue or it depends on who you contact.

I have the Z9 and bought 2 of the Angelbird 512GB cards ... one of them failed during the wedding rehearsal the night before the wedding I was shooting and the morning of the wedding I had to run out and buy 2 of a more reliable brand. I had others but I don't want to ever be shooting a wedding with only 2 cards. Now needing to contact Angelbird to see what can be done about getting a refund for the cards and if it is possible to retrieve the photos ... it was a rehearsal but had some great shots on it. I would never risk using that brand of card again.

So Angelbird support was good … they replaced the cards with 2 brand new ones and I was then able to return them to Henry’s for a full refund. I won’t risk using that brand again but at least I was able to return them. I did lose photos and had to pay duty on the new cards but I did get most of my money back, and don’t have to worry about losing more photos …so thank you Angelbird for at least allowing me to return the product.

Speaking about remote controls, doesn't it have bluetooth? Can you use your phone as a remote? On the Z6-2 you can in P/S/A/M modes, but not in the U1/2/3 modes...

It does, and yes, but it's just nowhere near as nice using a phone as a dedicated button that you don't need to wake up with your face or thumbprint in the dark and look at to hit the right spot. A physical button is worth a lot to me in this digital age.

It's 3D tracking is far beyond any previous. It locks on eyes, faces and torsos of human or animal subjects you direct it to with the 3d AF point.

When looking at battery capacity, unfortunately the industry uses milliamp/hours as a unit. However, that is utterly meaningless, if you don't also know the voltage of the battery. For instance, most battery packs output 5 volts (3.7 internally), while the Z9 uses 10.8 volts. That means, that the Z9 battery actually have about twice the energy than you'd expect. 14:58

Angelbird card is amazing value. But they released a firmware for it recently and you needed the Angelbird card reader to update the firmware. Lucky I bought one, but that is annoying for anyone who everyone else.

You can, but it's nowhere near as convenient, quick and easy as a little thumb button in your pocket. Unlock the phone, make sure the app is still connected via bluetooth, find the spot on the screen to tap... Nah, give me a little tactile little long range radio transmission button every time.

Watch out a buddy of mine got the RRS and it didn't fit, like really didn't fit. My friends are getting their Kirk's in the mail so they're getting shipments out. Yeah I can't live with strap lugs or any other loose items on my cameras. They drive me nuts. When I get a new body, the battery goes in the charger while I pry those things off. I really don't think a bracket should need a shim. The full video cage they sent me for it on the other hand is fabulous. Really wonderful.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto thanks.. I’ve been waiting since January for the RRS. I think that Nikon accessories have become a low priority for them or maybe they are still recovering from the pandemic. Every new offering from Nikon ( lenses , bodies, etc. ), their (RRS) accessories have to be preordered and the wait is pretty long. Look at the compact nodal rail you spoke about last year. It’s been back ordered ever since.

Eunice, it's not just nikon stuff. The PG-01 pano kit I recommended last year has been backordered over 6 months. I believe their assault weapon accessory department takes priority these days. Government contracts are quite lucrative. There are a lot of reasons I prefer Kirk and Acratech. That's just one of them. For example the people at Kirk and Acratech are so wonderful. I adore working with them.
