Jack Huston, from Missouri Drone Deer Recovery, made the trip from Columbia, MO to my farm to do an aerial survey with his thermal drone. I had no idea getting an aerial survey could be so easy. In the past, such data required helicopter time and lots of money - neither of which I have. So, being able to learn exactly how many deer I have on the farm and even how many of them are bucks, was really impressive and very useful. We even think we found the farm's biggest buck - the legendary Jordan Buck!

It was super interesting, that is for sure. Especially regarding where they were bedded vs wind direction. That really surprised me, that almost none bedded on the windward points. I am just glad that almost none of the bucks had antlers or it would have taken a lot longer as we tried to estimate age, etc. of the bucks based on antler size.

We track wounded deer and bear with trained tracking dogs and also utilize a thermal drone. I can’t say one is definitively better than the other, as both are tools in the toolbox for game recovery and both have their place/application. However, seeing a drone operate in person is definitely eye an opening experience. Our clients are blown away by what wildlife is using their property at any given time. Nice job with the survey!!

I like the way you think. She doesn't care one way or the other. If we can get him for her in October while it is still warm (she won't hunt much when it gets cold) we will give it a try, but she honestly doesn't care what she shoots. She would be super happy with anything. So we aren't going to be too picky when it comes to her hunts.

@@buckhundred Yeah, I thought the same thing. Where I hunt in Pennsylvania we used to have 80-100 deer per sq mile. It was nothing to see 50 deer run by in rifle season. We have about a 40 deer/sq mile down here on our place in eastern MS. We are in the heart of pine country, but we do provide about 20 acres of food plots on our 200-acre parcel. We definitely see your thoughts about lower deer density leading to higher scoring bucks playing out. It can make for a lot of slow hunts, but generally speaking, we have an opportunities to harvest multiple exceptional sized bucks each year.

Bill don’t let the todays technology take away from the hunting aspect. One of the greatest aspects of bow hunting is the unknown… To become so familiar with a thing is to lose its first valve, the unknown then known.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 3 ай бұрын
I agree 100%. In the end, the journey is still the destination and how you hunt is more important that what you shoot because we do this for love of the challenge and love of the pursuit. Each person has a different place along the technology spectrum that allows them to maximize their satisfaction with the experience. Some will only shoot a traditional bow, or only hunt from the ground, etc. It is super important not to let technology replace the unknown as you call it. You are exactly right.

Most areas that I hunt in SE Ohio the density is closer to 40-50 per sq mile. And buck to doe ratio is more like 5 does to one buck. Great info to have if you’re a conservationist. Far as it being a poachers tool yeah probably but nothing is going to stop them aside from arrest. Cell cameras are a larger threat than any thermal drone because they’re being used to “legally” target bucks in real time by mass numbers. Most people are using them and are successful because of them.

Takes some of the fun out of scouting, and learning your woods while keeping human pressure at a minimum. Bill do you think they didn’t bed on the westerly sides solely due to the wind direction? Or is that some of the steepest parts of the farm?

@bill-winke 3 ай бұрын
I think this technology has a place, but in way does it replace scouting. Also, it needs to be closely regulated so people don't get the idea that is a good way to scout during the season. I think they bedded where they did entirely because of wind direction.

Were the majority of deer, especially the bucks bedded in the “traditional” driftless bedding locations of ends of ridges, points, saddles etc? And were they all the way on top or just over the crest of the ridge/ponts?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 3 ай бұрын
Yes, they were. Shockingly, almost to the deer they were where you expect them. The wind was a huge factor and it makes me realize some important things about bedding area vs wind direction that I never considered to be this clearly focused. I will never hunt a wind that is good for me but bad for the deer again if it relates to bedding areas. They only bed where it is good for them.

I also think you'll get a more potentially meaner bucks with real good knockem down fightem up thats what they like. They gotta have reasons too be the top bucks and what more could there be but who has the most does under his spell... then when a buck can't hold back on a doe that belongs to someone else man they go gonzo beserk like fight to the death beserkers thats what ya want...when you harvest them big boys it looks like they fought in wwone haha...But you didn't mention too much about turkey estimates what I always saw was the more I hunted and I always hunted alot spring and fall which meant they heard alot of calling because I've always called alot for everything waterfowl whatever you name it but back to the point is those turkeys felt more at home more comfortable and consequently made the area home and then of course your flock just takes right off year after year it gets larger until they sub branch off. Another thing about turkeys I see is never try too figure out where they like the flock roost only they can pick the perfect spots. Seems like some deer to get attached too laying near human area they know your there maybe their curious or maybe their trying to say thank you for your efforts...

I really like Bill and all of his educational content. He loves to work and I respect and emulate that. I'm just totally against drones for deer Intel in any capacity. There is too much potential for misuse. Spying on neighboring deer and identifying exact beds of your own deer seems unfair. Love all the content except this one.

I understand and yes abuse is possible. And I agree that during the season or even approaching it this technology should be strictly banned. I guess the question is how to draw that line and where. The states will sort it out. But what we did here is only useful for management purposes and just general knowledge about deer. Every state DNR should be doing this to get accurate numbers for management purposes, especially on public lands. What we learned offers no insight into where or how to hunt them in the fall.

@bill-winke thank you for the reply. I don't want you to think I was implying that you would do this but anybody else could during deer season. Not a fan of this technology..

@glenn19630 It's called capitalism. Are you mad you don't get an apartment or house for free as well? All your "Free to hunt" opportunities took advantage of people who had a valuable commodity. If they are cool with that, great, but don't whine because you don't get freebies any more.

This technology is fantastic! I really cant get my head around all the controversy for using drones for taking an inventory of deer or tracking wounded deer. Did you notice any of the deer being disturbed in any way by the drone?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 3 ай бұрын
It is awesome for this specific purpose. But the thermal drone would be a huge problem if it was allowed for pursuit of game during the season or even close to that purpose. For example, every morning you could just fly at 10:00 AM after all the deer are bedded; find your target buck, fly around to find out where all the other deer are bedded and then plan a route that would get you within 100 yards undetected every single day. I am not sure how many people would actually do that, but I am sure some would if it was legal. That is an extreme, but in that case it would be a really bad thing. I think most states are tightly regulated against anything like that.

if drones are just legal for all general purposes how would it be enforced to prevent cheating ? Also, does a thermal drone look different to the naked eye allowing someone to call the game wardens for investigation ?
@paulbernitt3559
@paulbernitt3559 3 ай бұрын
@@6400jr Laws are established for the use of "air traffic" and deer hunting. As an example, if an airplane is used to drop hunters off in the wilderness of Colorado, there is a period where the hunters cannot pursue game. Thermal drone recovery of a wounded animal or for inventory for game management is a new for of tech which can and should be regulated in the hunting industry on a State by State basis. As far as enforcement, it just like any other law that is broken which requires reasonable cause for suspicion, investigation, evidence and testimony. I dont see this as much different than any other existing hunting regulation other than it is newer and needs proper regulations to catch up with the innovation so both law enforcers and hunters know how to ethically and responsibly handle the different situations.

Cool tech but wow, what a slippery slope. I guess I'm old school, but I still like being surprised by what walks down the trail. With cell cams and drones, you have the potential to know every deer on your property....(boring)!! This sort of thing draws parallels to LiveScope "videogame" fishing! Yuck.

I dispise live scope but to compare it to trail cams or a survey seams out of touch with reality. Hes not scanning the woods with a drone, following them until he gets close enough to shoot lol. Come on now

@@alltree78Trail cameras and foodplots are the equivalent of using a livescope for sure. People complain too much about what others use. Before it was compounds bow are going to ruin deer hunting, now it's crossbows. Trail cameras provide tons of information on deer movement and weather patterns. To think otherwise is stupid. Foodplots are the same way. No different than using any type of sonar equipment for fishing. Let other use what they want and don't worry about it. That's the problem with hunting nowadays, people spend more time worrying about what others are doing, than actually hunting.

If its legal whats the problem? Its just another tool for gathering information. The season is MONTHS away and the movement of the deer will change over and over by then.

I generally like your content Bill but this one I don’t like. If I were your neighbor and didn’t know or give you permission (whether needed or not) to fly a drone over your property but also tour the “neighborhood “ as you say. I’d be pissed. There’s too much intrusion into private space as it is. I don’t agree with this at all.

@bill-winke
@bill-winke 3 ай бұрын
We didn't actually fly neighboring properties. The drone can sense the thermal images from quite a ways away and we just looked at what was showing up on the screen without trying to attribute anything more to it and got a general idea of the overall density of that area. Nothing specific to any particular property. It is impossible to fly my farm without the thermal images of the land directly adjacent to that showing up.

Exactly. We all need to be really careful how we let technology take over the experience. Everyone has their own place along that spectrum. What we might want to limit others might want to do, so as long as it is legal, we need to be sure we aren't telling others that they aren't true hunters though they are following the laws. They are just at a different place in their journey.

Had one fly an area I hunt for a census. A few things based on my experience with a professional pilot and equipment. IMO- anyone using these unethically or illegally should be cited hard. They’re so much more of a poaching tool than a thermal scope. Someone could recreationally fly any property, recording and inventorying it.. perhaps even scaring game in a certain manner. They’re an amazing tool for recovery but so deadly in the wrong hands… and they’re easy to find with anyone owning one. His four hour estimate was alarming. My experience would’ve be more along the lines of 20-30minutes for you farm focussing on every mature buck in a high stem count, high deer density area. I was alarmed at how noisy it was. Last part- they’re MRI. Our flight indicated a very different observation/perception of what cameras did just 24hrs prior. Take everything contemporary with a grain of salt.
