I always wondered why his face melts away when he is talking to Thorin about knowing what dragon fire is like and then the skin on his face regrows back just as quick. I was like what the hell was that?! I wish they would have elaborated on how and why he did that.

@@sudzy8285 Tolkien has said that when elves felt their soul scarred due to mental trauma or sorrow, the scars on their souls can sometimes show up on their bodies. It's very likely that its not the dragon fire that make those scars, but rather losing his wife in such horrible death (probably). Because for elves, their souls are always take precedence over their body.

He brought one thousands infantry and several hundred archers at least that’s one of the few cases Tolkien gives us of numbers. He usually didn’t give actually numbers of armies. I suspect that the elven king only brought a fraction of his force. His realm is the only elven realm that grew in population during the events of the third age. So I would assume he had an army of 7,500-12,500 he would need to leave a good amount back in his realm to protect his borders. So out of all the elven kingdoms/realms his was the most powerful but still not as many as the men of Rohan who had a number of 12,000 exact in Tolkien’s own words. Just some fun information for ya!!

I don't know, I don't remember him being so focused on jewels. I totally understand his hate for dwarves (anyone having read the backstory would know that), but in the book he showed a certain level of humility and astuteness that he didn't in the movie. In the book, he praises Bilbo for giving him and Bard a way to end the strife without fighting, hinting that the last thing he actually wants is battle, he simply wants what he feels the dwarves of Erebor owed his people...because they did. He can be petty and he can be callous, but he tempers it in a way the movies missed.
@niheliniheli4514
@niheliniheli4514 5 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Edwards. Yeah I remeber that line from the book too. I think what they tried too show in the movies, his shock at the amount of Elves that died in the battle and why he wanted to retreat at a point, is the same thing that makes him want to avoid fighting in the books. Another thing which is only briefly addressed in extended version is a reason behind his obsession with the gems of lasgalen. After Tauriel and Legolas leave the City to help the Dwarves, Gandalf says to Thranduil that apart from gems he also had a son to remember his Wife by, implying that the gems of Lasgalen are an Heirloom/Token from his Wife.

Andrew That elk was a truly dumb and impractical element that looked great but had little thought behind it. Critics have called even horses impractical for life in a dense forest, although the book mentions the King and his retinue riding out to hunt. Now just imagine a mount with a ten foot antler spread trying to get around between the trees.

Orochi2345678 Anti-Elrond was a bit simplistic. Thranduil was the only leader of an elven realm in the Tnird Age who did it without the help of a Ring of Power, with Sauron to the south and a dragon to the east. Led Pace described him as the Fisher King, wounded in some manner but still fighting on despite it.

Problems and overusing of CGI aside, The Hobbit is quite a beautiful trilogy, in the techincal, costume design and photography sense. Everything you see in a shot has a propouse and is made with exquisite detail and care. And Thandruil might be the best example of that, even the smallest quirks in the way he walks, moves, speaks, is crafted to the core, to make him eathereal, wise and deadly when needed. Lee Pace is a wonderful actor, so underrated... This is one of my favorite character he made, because the love and care that he had in crafting his performance shines through every scene his in.

In alternate reality, if Jim Henson did the Hobbit in the 80's the only person who could've played Thranduil at that time probably would've been David Bowie. Since that never happened, I like that Lee Pace plays Thranduil.

corsican lulu no way! He was great musically & on stage but on screen he was always just David Bowie dressed up. kinda wooden. Too big a star factor to get past. alright in Labyrinth which was his own vehicle anyway, but not in a middle Earth movie. Lee Pace was superb. One of the best things in the hobbit movies. probably partly because he wasn't in Lord of The Rings as an actual character so he could be fresh. The Hobbit movies don't really work for me though to be honest. can't help being super fussy with Tolkien, having grown up on all his great writing. Maybe because the 3 Lord of The Rings movies were almost perfect which was an amazing achievement. Also The Hobbit being essentially a childrens' book for adults aswell as children, so difficult to make it work in film when LOTR had been done so well and so seriously. I think it might've worked better if they'd cast the entire thing as a different film entity altogether with no actors from LOTR at all. No Cross over. Of course the temptation to do it the way they did was no doubt too great which is understandable.

In the book, the Elvenking though isolated is actually wiser, kinder, more reasonable, more engaged in local policies and concerned about what’s going on in the world in contrast with isolationistic behaviour of movie version. I wish Peter Jackson had made him so and not to be overly arrogant. And what about the magic that Thandruil possesses. Would have loved to see that. In the book, it said his magic is less powerful than the High Elves, but still strong as he was able to put a spell on the palace's entrance doors to keep prisoners from escaping... On other note, Lee Pace's Thranduil is stunning!

Dark Illusion bah! Thranduil in the books is still isolated, arrogant and greedy! In fact, FAR more greedy than the movie portrayed! Though, not nearly as mean, for he did not take up the men of lake town just for extra troops, but out of pity. But he was a greedy elf! And i hate that they portrayed him in a good light, whilst dragging thror's name through the mud!
@goldenpig0711
@goldenpig0711 7 жыл бұрын
No. Gotrek Gurnisson. You really need to the book before you comment. He was never arrogant or greedy - Not according to the book. Name one instance where he was arrogant or greedy in the book and I'll debunk that myth with fact and quote from the book itself to prove you wrong. He was somewhat isolated, and that started under Oropher's ruling

Dark Illusion the hobbit, chapter 8, page 155: " if the elf king had one weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, he was ever eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lord of old". Greed, if ever i did see it.

Dark Illusion though he wasnt a total ass, ill admit. He did help the men of lake town in their need, and was willing to only take a part of the treasure of erebor, rather than declaring all out war ( though the second might have something to do with the timing. Frankly, no one goes to war in the winter. )

At 8:41 when Lee was doing his interview he didn't blink for the 15 seconds shown. That shows not only skill as an actor but also strength in what a leader/King would be. Where they find that to be intimidating is to maintain eye contact and in this case no blinking.
