I'm mostly happy the new font distinguishes more between a lowercase L and an uppercase I. Here in Wales, we have some bilingual signs that have mistakes in them because someone who doesn't speak Welsh had to consult a translator and probably misread the typeface they used. For example, the Welsh word for yoghurt is "iogwrt", but most supermarkets label them as "Logwrt" because of this problem, so hopefully with people shifting to Aptos that's less likely to happen in the future!

Whats wrong with Bierstadt? They could at least name it Warstein, Flensburg, Frankfurt, Einbeck usw. Also wasn't Aptos even more controvesial? btw. I like the one! It looks like European one. Would have liked to have seen a European 7 too!

@@jc_hardt Well , the fact that it means "beer city" would have been worth keeping alone. What is your take an Non-English 7 , you know the one that doesn't lack the vertical strike in the middle? It's kinda rare in typefaces.

What about if I am looking for a default font that is compatible in cross-platform applications? Is Verdana the way to go?
@jc_hardt

Verenda can be a good option! Most typefaces can be installed on any device, but if you're working with a company that cannot manage installing a custom font, Verenda or Helvetica/Arial are my go to typefaces. I hope this helps!

Something that "feels modern" will actually last less long, because a stronger appearance wears out faster. In a very important way, the less something sticks out, the more it will last.
@jc_hardt
@jc_hardt 3 ай бұрын
This is very true, but I would argue this was Calibri's problem. It was designed to be "modern" but then became outdated quickly. The nice thing about Aptos is it takes inspiration from Helvetica, which has been established as a workhorse font for over 50 years and is still going strong.

Do you have any thoughts on the font in terms of inclusivity? Like when it comes to dyslexic people I hear that having really distinguished letters helps. Perhaps that’s a possible reason for the c and the e to be so different? What do you think?
@jc_hardt
@jc_hardt 3 ай бұрын
Great question! Super important. Lexend was actually designed specifically to help with dyslexia. I believe the designer was also a reading therapist. Certain typefaces are easier than others, and we should lean into that when possible!

I will keep to Arial, the squiggly lower case g always put me off calibri and will keep me away from aptos. It is just a strong personal preference.

@@jc_hardtI did an update in Microsoft Office in November 2023 and my laptop started to have aptos as default font to my new documents. I spotted up other differences, but this time not with the Swiss fonts of 1957, but with Ariel. The number one (1) has the cap like Arial. The number seven (7) has a straight leg, which it means: that glyph isn’t inspired by Helvetic’s or arial, but with Adrian Frutiger’s Univers, another Swiss 1957 font. It’s been 1 year today and I still like it! Thank you for this interesting video. For how many years you think that aptos is the default? Because I really like it and it will be better if this is the default forever.

Aptos is not better than Calibri for low res screens, which are still prominent in corporate devices, where most MS Office users live. Aptos is designed for hi res screens.

I’ve been trying really hard to like it, and it has grown on me a bit, but there are things that are not making it easy. I’m a heavy Excel user so Aptos Narrow is the variant I’ve been using most. But there are some really glaring issues with it that seem to be related to how it’s being rendered in Excel specifically. Numerals look absolutely horridly narrow and amateurish at 11pt, and completely different to either 10 or 12pt (at least in the desktop app - rendering seems to be different on the web). And the ‘1’ numeral just inexplicably received a bottom bar, similar to Calibri, making Narrow inconsistent with the rest of the family (but again, only in the desktop app, not on the web). I was concerned all this was related to rendering just being terrible on lower resolution displays (my laptop is 1080p), but I’ve had the same experience at 1440p. So I’m hoping these are teething problems and once they’ve stopped messing around with it, it’ll look more uniform and I’ll eventually just forget about it.

I'm sorry but Aptos is a boring typeface. If were to choose a new default typeface for Microsoft Office. then it would be Source Sans 3 from Google Fonts, which is way more elegant and modern.

Thanks for sharing! What do you think makes Aptos boring? 🤔
@DimiChris
@DimiChris 10 ай бұрын
@@jc_hardt mostly the fact that it resembles the Helvetica and the Arial font, despite the differences. It's a very 'common' typeface, there's nothing very new about it, imo.
@jc_hardt
@jc_hardt 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I think Microsoft probably intended for it to feel like Helvetica and Arial, give that those typefaces are so foundational. If we think of all the places this typeface will need to live, it makes sense to opt on the side of versatility rather than uniqueness, which may not translate to a wide variety of use cases.
@Eugensson

Well that's the purpose, the default font must be boring. It should not steal attention from the content itself.

I used Calibri because I thought I had no choice. I got used to it, begrudgingly. I love Helvetica, still, I would be over the moon happy if I could use it seemlessly. I hate Aptos. I hope I get used to it since I am being forced to use it or add steps to my workflow that will become thousands and thousands of extra useless steps. Microsoft sucks. Hard. Why can't we have nice things?
