This video helped me figure out that the Aputure light might be best for me as a Narrative film maker. I feel that the difference between the low end and high end, gives it enough range to justify the purchase but the savings on the Godox is also very compelling

Brightness starting point of Aputure is actually a good thing, if we want light to be very low for any reason we can have that control. and the main difference of both lights is control. Aputure has more controls and effects than Godox but we don't use that very often so my choice will be Godox

Amazing Heather! You pack so much information into your videos and you get straight to the point. No b.s. people don’t need to know, no lies, no hidden agenda. Thank you for helping me make up my mind between the two main budget brands I was considering. The only off putting thing is the handle with the Godox, but since I’ll be using just a simple umbrella reflector, I don’t think the flimsy handle will be moving so much as if I was attaching a huge soft box on the end. Thank you! Subscribed!

@@FellowFilmmaker Hi Heather! Thanks for relying to my comment! I didn’t expect you to - I’d imagine you’re super busy! But Thank you! You’re super sincere! Bless you! Due to Covid I’ve had to abandon my previous job as a photographer and have sold all my pro camera gear. I’m also a Pilates Teacher and that, unfortunately hasn’t been easy for me either. I see a lot of my friends teach on Zoom and KZfaq Live from home but tbh, it hasn’t worked for me. I’m still experimenting with the YT Live medium, hence why I’m still deciding how to “up my game” slightly as I no longer have an income to buy any expensive equipment (now being reduced to an iPhone and some screw on mini lenses) but like you said in your first video, it’s not about the gear. If anything, the lack of funds and the lack of gear will teach me to go back to basics and think about what’s important and be more creative and make do with what I have and to “know my gear”. Thank you for creating your channel. I do believe in fate and I feel like I was meant to find your channel during this time of uncertainty as it is a chance for me to “pivot” and see life and reinvent myself yet again (like many people during this period of uncertainty) before moving forward! I think I will get a pair of the Godox SL-50Ws since everything else seems to be too pricey and for filming indoor fitness videos in my bedroom, it seems silly to spend too much esp. when my camera will be my iPhone 10XS for a while. I think I’d better focus more on pumping up my background and delivering more enjoyable content. I don’t have the time to edit my videos (since I’m a carer for my Dad) but at least of I plan them in advance, they’ll be less cr***y 🤣🤣🤣 I do like the VL-150s but seems like overkill for a small bedroom? But I do think some form of continuous LED lighting with a quiet fan is the way to go instead of these 5 prong energy saving lightbulbs with soft boxes I have seen on eBay. 🤣🤣🤣 I’m also camera shy having been behind the lens for the past 11 years so I am learning to be more comfortable in front of it whether I like it or not. Hahaha. Take care and thanks again for your kind reply!
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing all that! :D Honestly, it really isn't about the gear. It's the person who operates the gear. :) And I do understand why it's hard to be in front of the camera. Over time you'll get better as you do it more and more and find how your personality will shine. :D That's what people are there to watch. Be true to your standards and self and the right people will come - like you have with my channel! :D And with the gear question, yes a simple decent light setup will do wonders. For iphone video just be sure you have a way of controlling the camera. bit (an app or something perhaps) and you'll do great! With small spaces you don't need big lights at all! To be honest I was doing fine with just one Godox SL60w when I first started out (see first videos). If you have more specific questions I can help you with you can always DM me on instagram @fellowfilmmaker :D Wishing you the best!

Thank you very much for the good comparison. I just received the Godox and still in the packaging. I wanted to send it back first, but now I know the fan is now quieter. And that the Godox can compete in terms of light output with the much too expensive Aputure. Then I am now going to unpack the Godox SL-60W and the God S2 80x80 Softbox with honeycomb grid I ordered along with it 😍 Thanks again and I will give you a 2 thumbs up right away. 👍🏻

Great comparison video! I know you said you liked that the godox was brighter at the lower percentages (10% and 25%) But in my opinion, I would prefer that it got as dim as the aputure light. Because I can definitely image situation where even 10% on the godox might be too bright. Having the aputure able to dim so low is a positive in my book. You've got a much wider range of power to play with. That being said I'' still buy the Godox, because at that price it can't be beat!!
@FellowFilmmaker
@FellowFilmmaker 4 жыл бұрын
I whole heartedly agree! I have the Godox VL300 and I love it being able to dim down to 1%, but Aputure certainly dims more than Godox in general so that is a big plus for those situations. :)

Thank you. I'm a stills guy normally but a friend has asked me to shoot a couple of exercise vids of her in my photo studio and I said yes. Been looking at LED panel/softbox kits but came across the Godox and this is what I need, I think. I already have Godox AD400 and V1 strobes and a couple of Bowens softboxes. The beauty of the SL60 is that I can also do continuously-lit stills/portraits with it too, which just adds another shooting option and is something I've wanted to try. Can't justify the Aputure; it's a bit like ProFoto and Godox; for about the price of a ProFoto A1 I got the AD400, the mains adapter for the AD400, the V1, V1 modifier kit and Godox trigger and still had enough left over to buy an 80cm beauty dish and two heavy-duty light stands :0) And I can't fault the Godox gear at all. Worth noting also that there is a battery (only) version of the SL60 as well, for a bit more $, if portability is important.

Great comparison video, thank you. I happen to own the Godox SL60 and agree with you for the price you can't beat it. You get a great video light. My Godox will say at the Home Studio, but now I am looking for a 2nd light for on the go. In my case I believe I will spend the extra for 3 reasons 1) Quality build metal vs plastic and case hands down goes to Aperture 2) Battery option, you don't always have an outlet nearby. 3) the different modes, Lighting, TV flicker, Fireplace, the busted bulb... for those reasons, my 2nd and possibly a 3rd will be the Aperture 120D.

Hi! The SL-60 is rated as 60 W -> 50 % of the Aputure light. That leaves the question, whether the godox just has no linear dimming curve. Your histogram is clipping, so its not that easy to tell whether de 120d also has double the output? Besides that a very good comparision. I like a lot, that you cover more than just the specs - which helps, because I can get specs also from the website.

In comparing brightness at dimmed levels, you seemed to give preference to godox. However, I personally prefer an LED light that can dim down and give the actual percentage output. If they are essentially the same brightness at full, but godox is brighter at 10%, that's NOT better, it's worse.
@moonthink8288
@moonthink8288 4 жыл бұрын
Plus you're calling the aputure a "weak" light even though it's brighter at full. That makes zero sense to me. If your output graphics are to be believed, then the godox at 10% is actually giving 50% brightness, while the aputure settings are much more accurate to output levels. So not only is the aputure brighter at full, but also has a MUCH wider dimming range of control. How is that a weakness??
@moonthink8288
@moonthink8288 4 жыл бұрын
Finally, here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bbSme7xkt8u2gXU.html is the graphic that shows that the "quality" is not at all similar. The Aputure will color render much much better than the godox. Now you can argue that for the price, godox is the better value, but quality of light is no contest.

Thanks for this. I felt the review was biased towards godox too, sort of knew before the recommendation section she was going to go with godox, especially after the 'i own two godox' truth bomb. Seems like the comparison tests cannot be trusted either. I guess more money does equal better quality.
@ardentvibe6917
@ardentvibe6917 4 жыл бұрын
Yeahhh, I definitely would prefer a light that gives me more control over how little output I can get for very delicate lighting situations. I also noticed that the most valuable part about the Aperture system wasn’t mentioned, and that is their lighting app that gives you full control over every light on set. This light was built around that app, and the remote was only included to give you control when you don’t want to use the app.

Great review. You got yourself a new subscriber. Own a Godox SL60W already and love it. It’s an older version though. But so good to hear (or not hear) the newer version. I would say though that I’d love if it was less bright in the low settings. It’s very bright at 10 percent and I often don’t go past 25%. PS: Small advice: Put links to amazon.co.uk as well. We’re quite a few Europeans here and buying from .com is expensive due to taxes. So you’ll miss any commission from possible sales.

@RMJRVIDEO
@RMJRVIDEO 4 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker haha, I agree, snoot is a funny word. A snoot is a conical device that is attached to a light to narrow and focus the beam on a subject. Often times used as a 'kicker' light to highlight a small portion of a subject. My students would always think I was kidding with them when I introduced the snoot. I love the barn doors. I can shape the light as needed with them.

From this test it didn't look like a controlled variation. It was like, 5%, 8%, 12%, 80%, 100%.... while the Godox was actually at roughly the powers she mentioned. And seriously, if that's worth 5 times the price to you...
@rrmin36
@rrmin36 3 жыл бұрын
But, you could buy 6 Godox for the same price.... so, which is brighter now? :-)
@daniel.lopresti
@daniel.lopresti 3 жыл бұрын
Thing is, it's not because you have a variable intensity light that suddenly scrims or ND gels stop working .. and if anything LED lights won't melt your ND so it makes even more sense to use :)

I think that this is due to the fact that aperture uses a log curve while the godox uses a linear curve.

Interesting to hear other’s opinions! If I was travelling anywhere overseas or if I had to walk and carry equipment I’d take the Godox because it weighs less, and you can find kettle plugs in every country, where the neutrik style of the 120D you’d need a plug adapter. I did the fan mod on my SL60Ws and SL60Y so I am super curious about this new fan on the newer manufactured lights. With the brightness thing you said, sometimes that 10% is just too bright so having the Aputure able to go all the way down to 1% is really useful. And for price you’re right that it’s partly due to brand but there’s so many benefits from using Aputure from functionality, build quality, etc. I really like your b roll! Great job~ Shows you put a lot of time and thought into your video ^^

Hi, I did not understand how the power of the Aputure could be a considered less good...it’s more flexible and more powerful, right? Why would you want it to be more powerful at 50%?? You need more light? Well dial it up.. so you can get more light out of it than with the Godox and you can also get less light if you wanted. You really insisted on the bag being the biggest difference between the two, you know, even within the same brand and the same range of product, one of the cause for a big price difference between to light fixtures has always been the ability to be battery powered ( have a look at Elinchrom or Profoto lighting for example) , I don’t think saying « get the Godox and buy a bag with the money you saved » is a fair assessment of the differences. I own an Aputure 120D and I was going to buy a Godox SL light but thanks to you I found out about the lack of color accuracy which, to me is the biggest no no, so thank you very much for this content, please keep it up 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Thanks for the comparison video, Heather. This is one of the best 120d videos I've found on KZfaq. I just picked up the 120d mkii and am noticing some fan noise. In addition to the soft "whir", I feel like I am also hearing a harder rattle? Nothing crazy, but it isn't a 100% "soft" sound. This is only when the fan kicks on 70% and above. Not sure if this is normal or if I have an abnormal fan system.
@FellowFilmmaker

Hmm, I'm not really sure. I do know the fans are noticeable but if there is something that is loud then it could be an issue. Not sure how to advise.
