With the popular Aqara FP1 & FP2 mmWave sensors expensive and hard to get your hands on, is the Aqara P1 PIR worth considering?
Or is it even worth getting the Original Aqara motion sensor instead?!
In this video I add it to Home Assistant using ZHA and then do some range testing at different distances.

I just recently purchased the P1 sensor to automate my stair lights that I was hoping could be triggered by motion from both floors (placing the sensor on the wall of the landing) so I can use a single sensor for both floors. I knew that it would be a challenge to detect motion based on vertical angle due to the height difference between both floors, but I never even got to testing that part. I could never reliably get the P1 sensor to detect my motion unless I'm around 6 feet or less away from it. And even on high sensitivity, it won't detect my presence if I move slowly towards it, until I'm almost near it. I was so bewildered by how unreliable it is that I took my really old Wyze Sensor V1 and compared it with the P1. 80-90% of the time, the old Wyze Sensor would instantly pick me up as I move slowly into view, while the P1 will just sit there idly untill all of a sudden it triggers. I felt so frustrated with how bad the detection was that I returned the 4 P1 sensors I bought and had planned to replace various manual sensors in the house. I wonder if I should try and get my hands on the original Aqara Motion sensor and see how that works.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, I find the original Aqara ones infinitely better. I have been using them for maybe even 6 years at this point. I have a mixture of Aqara and the original Mi Home branded ones, which are basically the same but without the light sensor. As you mention yourself you might still struggle between 2 floors, however I actually do have a sensor at the top of the stairs which can trigger at the bottom and top of the stairs. Just make sure you put it in a place where people walk across the sensor rather than towards or away from it for the best results.

i can see the scalability of the P1 sensitivity. The original one looks like its stuck on high and only lowers at most to medium-high. I quite like the original because I want it to detect the slightest of motions unless I constantly get false triggers.

Yeah, the original is basically always highly sensitive. I like the original one. I don't really ever get false positives on mine. The only time I found this an issue is if you have them in direct sunlight, so positioning them correctly is key.

@lets-automate I got two P1s during Prime day and I bought two Eves a couple days before that to see if Aqara would be a good substitute. The two work well together and I thought I would just keep them both to cover each other's blind spots. However, for some reason, right around 9:45pm every night, they both go unresponsive and pretty much stays this way for roughly two hours. I reached out to Eve and they said it's a known bug that is caused when the lux falls to zero. I thought it made sense since that's when I hit my movie scene and shut off all the lights except for my TV backlighting. The sensor wouldn't pick that up because it's not in the living room. So instead of the lights going off when no motion is detected, I had it dim then instead and drop the color temp to warm white. But it still managed to go unresponsive. The weird thing those is, the Aqara sensor goes dud the very same time as well and so does the one in my office. So I'm like, wtf, these are useless if they don't work properly in the dark. That's precisely when you need them. Have you ever experienced anything like this before?
